I guess you'll have to stump up an extra £220 for the IPS :-) then play lottery with the backlight bleed hehe

the Asus Rog variant of this (PG278Q) is still £589 is also over 2 years old and has G sync V1 and is only 144hz

so imo this is a steal.. and looks better

can say from first hand because i've owned this monitor it is amazing and so responsive and looks really smart on the desk, I ordered mine from Acer store directly few months back

Snap! Price is very tempting though... Deal Heated.

I've been wanting to buy the IPS version for a month but no-one has stock (or no reputable shop has stock). Currys were sellling them for £600 but it looks like it maybe discontinued? Torn between that or an X34A but put off by this because of the fiddling required to run certain games at widescreen (or not).

Its time like this I wish there were some decent high-street retailers were you can view monitors before purchase.

You don't.

PCMR do!

I've been keeping an eye on this spec ie 1440p, 27" gsync and this is about as cheap as I've seen. Its a small range, and the IPS panels are very pricey so i'm tempted by TN. I've heard that with the right setup/colour profiles you can get very very close to an IPS type monitor with modern TNs. Very tempted.

For an actual pragmatic answer:

I own a 144hz Monitor (1080p, TN. It's a BenQ model I can't remember off the top of my head).

For general use: The high frame rate REALLY reduces the amount of stress headaches I get. It's wonderful, and I hate going back to the office and using the "standard" 60hz panels.

For casual gaming: The high refresh rate, as above, really helps avoid headaches. It also looks spectacularly smooth.

For hardcore gaming: The response time and blur is significantly reduced over a "standard" monitor. This can help with competitive gaming.

This monitor also has GSYNC which drastically reduces screen tearing/artefacts which can occur if the frame rate drops below the ideal 144hz output.

As to why you'd spend your money on this over a 40 inch 4K telly. Well this is subjective and dependent on your circumstances, but I spend far more time in front of my PC than my TV. There's not a great deal of content out there in 4K currently (and even fewer methods for actually sending a 4K image to a 4K TV. Today's consoles are only now being adapted to send 4K video, but not process a video game in 4K. there's a lot of misinformation with the new Xbox scorpio/PS4 pro regarding this, look into it further), and by the time there is, 4K TVs will be better and cheaper.

Case in point: The benefits of a 144hz gsync 1440p (read: hi-res) monitor at this price CURRENTLY vastly outweigh any 4K TV you might want.

TV input lag is generally terrible and the 144Hz refresh rate is MUCH sharper than useless 60-75Hz if your GPU can provide the frames

There's something weird going on with this monitor. I pre ordered a month ago and, as I'm the impatient type, got in touch with Amazon. They told me that Acer has not given them a release date yet and to contact them. So I did. They told me that the monitor has been released months. Not once, not twice, but on three separate chats. (Yes I used the correct model number during). Which is obviously ridiculous as there would be a 1000 YouTube reviews the day it's released. I don't know what is going on. Anyone add to this?

The monitor has definitely already been released. Plenty of people already own it... No bloody idea what's going on with it now though. Everywhere is out of stock, not released and saying it needs to be pre-ordered. Makes absolutely no sense... There's a cover up going on somewhere.
charlemagnes_joy
3 Oct 16 #22
Why has there been no coverage by any Youtubers then? Every other predator variant has a 1000 reviews. I can't find reference to this on YouTube at all. This should, by right, be the best gaming monitor available (IPS aren't ideal for gaming with longer response times) so why the zero publicity?

Yeah it's really weird. Like up to this date the best TN/Gaming Monitor is the Asus pg298q. This monitor, I'm led to believe, uses the same panel but has an extra 21hz, gsync v2 and is £200 cheaper than the 2 year old Asus. This should be making a huge buzz on the tech review pages but nada. It doesn't make sense.

People still propagating the myths about IPS being too slow for gaming then?

A 4ms IPS panel can refresh the screen 250 times in one second. Given this will only run at 165Hz, that makes the IPS considerably faster than it needs to be.
adam0812 to ro53ben
3 Oct 16 #31
People also dont consider input lag. I upgraded from a pg278q to a pg279q, despite being IPS at 4ms, it was slightly faster overall because of lower input lag according to TFTCentral
AjunNg to ro53ben
3 Oct 16 #32
Response time does not equal the refresh rate.

Response time is how long it takes for your monitor to display the image after the command is executed.
Refresh rate is how many frames are rendered each second.
TheKaledan
3 Oct 16 #35
You are actually wrong as well.

Response time listed on these monitors is g2g. The time the pixels take to change from black to white to black again. Lower response time leads to better motion clarity.

You referencing input lag. Input lag on monitors often primarily comes from signal processing. Modern gaming ips and tns are often very similar in input lag so you won't notice any difference here.

The main advantages of ips are better viewing angles and more vibrant colours. Though tn isn't as far behind on colours as it used to be.

Tn has better motion clarity, is cheaper and doesn't have the save QC issues that the ips model have.

The ips model is very popular and has the same name as the tn. Which is why this monitor may seem familar to a lot of you.

Lol, all I was trying to say is that the TN displays the information you need to see faster. Do I give a ****? No! I would of course get the IPS if I could afford it. It's just a little consolation of going with the TN. I ain't no screen scientist!

And yes to the person who asked. Acer just confirmed Amazon would have stock at some stage this month.

Plasma blows all these arguments out of the water. Responce time of 0.001ms is 1000 times faster than this. What do all the fanboys have to say about that? Why are you not all using plasma screens?

This hz patter is nothing more than marketing drivel dreamed up by lcd panel manufacturers when plasma was still the leading tech in terms of sales.

ro53ben
3 Oct 16 1 #44
I know they aren't the same thing, my point is that having a response time which is faster than your refresh rate offers very little value.

Say your game is running at 100fps - your Gsync will then adjust your refresh rate to 100Hz to match.

With 100fps, you're trying to display a frame every 0.01 seconds, or every 10ms.

On a 1ms panel, you'll display the frame and then the panel will sit there for 9ms doing nothing at all.

On a 4ms panel, you'll display the frame and then the panel will sit there for 6ms doing nothing at all.

On both panel types, the panel is spending most of its time doing nothing.

Both panels will also only display one frame every 10ms, just the IPS panel will do it brighter with better colour.

Yes, but you would need to run a top of the line SLI graphics card set up (two GTX 1080's) to hit 144 frames a second at 1440p in most newer games. Also, only buy this if you have a Nvidia graphics card too as this monitor has g-sync. If you have AMD there is a similar BEN Q one with free sync.

charlemagnes_joy

That is an incredibly harsh assessment lol. The base is angular and has red feet but the screen itself is fairly minimal. I think the branding that they show on the screen exacerbates the problem. You probably wouldn't feel so strongly if you saw it with a game or movie playing on the screen.

for the people that keep commenting about IPS v TN, TN is better full stop for total hardcore gamers, im not talking your average TW3 player who keeps boasting they can't tell a difference im talking milliseconds responses CSGO or other games that require very fast response, the pixels of TN they transition faster than IPS to make that difference

I have a Dell S2716DG - 1440p, 144hz and G-sync.

I spent a long time looking into these, probably should share my thoughts;

- Avoid Acer. So many poor reports on their monitors at the high end, especially their customer services. Check some tech forums and you'll see. Some absolute horror stories on OCUK.
- Asus monitors are good but again, have quality control issues like Acer.

There were two top monitors - highly rated from performance, quality control and support. Ones that stood out really for feedback.

- The Dell S2716DG (A02 / A03 ver, avoid A01 version due to HDCP issue) is incredibly well rated.
- BenQ XL2730Z. Like the Dell, highly rated for performance, quality control and support.

I got my Dell brand new, A03 version. Full 3 year warranty and unopened from an eBay business seller. £340 delivered.

The BenQ can be had for less than this Acer from here:

http://www.box.co.uk/Benq_XL2730Z_27_Free-Sync_QHD_144Hz_Gam_1734784.html?gclid=CjwKEAjwps2_BRC5jduHor-h8xESJADGT-LtE7TTfjony7uL7wz0b9q-Le9vzUXamnl0rd9pOrwC4RoCgYDw_wcB
Kezman14
4 Oct 16 #74
The BENQ is freesync... So good if you have an AMD.. But for the price there are probably others on the market with the same performance for less.

The Dell is a good monitor and g-sync. Retails around 500£ so more expensive than this one as standard, but Yeh, a good monitor if you can pick up a deal
Puppeh
4 Oct 16 #75
Well it was used by all the professional teams at a recent CS:GO major, so each to their own I guess.

rebus_forever
4 Oct 16 1 #76
Refresh rate, accuracy, pixel density, resistant to screen tearing when paired with a nvidia gpu, the ability to alter the screen by its stand to change your angle of seating and id assume a massive amount of latency.

Theres more but i thought id provide you a non snarky reply to explain somewhat, im no expert re screens but you could spend 2k on a comp and if you bought a **** screen you will gimp that whole investment, your monitor could last you through a bunch of computers, paying up for a good one tends to be a positive investment.

6 Oct 16 #81
This is a newer monitor with better gsync (v2) and more hz for a cheaper price. The only reason would be the issues with Acers aftercare. If you get it and its broke on arrival just return. If it breaks 2 months down the line then your at their mercy. You have to weigh it up but I am still firmly sticking with this Acer.
hitman007
6 Oct 16 #82
When you're spending this kind of money, do you really want to be at the mercy of Acer?
charlemagnes_joy
6 Oct 16 #83
Yeah thats a fair view. But at the same time they can't break the law. They ship with a warranty of a certain period of time, a year I'm guessing. If anything goes wrong in that period of time, they have to deal with it. Thats true of all companies. Its just things like slow turnarounds leaving you without a monitor for a few weeks or bad policies meaning you get a refurb instead of a replacement if it's broke. But that will be a small percentage of the monitors. Most will work perfectly for years and if you get a dud, you just have to be patient. Like right now the Acer is £77.42 cheaper than the Dell on Amazon and should be equal to, or better than it in every way. Thats a lot to turn down for a better warranty. Dell aren't even known for being great the aftercare either.

For what it's worth, this should start to arrive. The listing on Amazon now showing "Usually dispatched within 1 to 2 months." I'd imagine pre-orders will get theirs before then!

Got in touch again as Xenon said the stock status had changed. They will be in stock on Tuesday November 15th and dispatch within a day or so after that.

Just got my email too. Between 18 Nov and 11 Dec, I placed my order on the 3rd October.

Sadly the AOC AG271GQ did not work out. It was an awesome looking panel and g-sync was excellent in the half hour I got to play with it. Just had a slight noticeable bleed bottom right corner. I may perhaps been able to live with it but the panel also had some sort of small black line mark underneath the screen which you could not remove. It's going back tomorrow. I'll wait for this, I think.

Incidentally I ordered this on Amazon on 26th September and I still do not have an ETA on when it is going to arrive.

So my estimate turned up, between 18th Nov and 12th Dec. Ordered 26th September.

I just got mine. First impressions are pretty good, everything seems alright. I did previously have the Dell s2716DG and ended up returning that to Overclockers because of grey uniformity issues (dirty screen effect) and while I'll give it a good testing before I make my final judgment from what I've seen on a fullscreen middle grey image the uniformity (while not perfect, but it never is) is better than on the last TN panel I tried. Negligible backlight bleed. I do have one dead pixel, at the very top near the edge of the panel a bit left of centre, pretty hard to notice really. I don't have a colour calibrator so I can't verify how accurate the colours and gamma are but coming from an srgb calibrated IPS monitor I'm not immediately disgusted so make of that what you will. All in all, first impressions are good. I think I may finally have a 144hz 1440p monitor that I will actually keep.
charlemagnes_joy
4 Nov 16 #125
Is there any way you can post a few pictures at different angels. Its hard to get a good understanding of what it really looks like in all the marketing pics.
Drunk_Si
4 Nov 16 #126
I can give it a go, the light's a bit naff today and I've only got my phone to take photos on. There's no real way for me to take photos that aren't a bit rubbish, I'm afraid.

http://imgur.com/WFJLmQf

http://imgur.com/5UmAwH6

http://imgur.com/h2K3XsD

http://imgur.com/6AaylE9

The photos do a poor job of showing the stand which is much less tacky looking than I thought it would be and certainly less garish than it appears in these photos. With that said if it does ultimately pass my quality standards and I keep it I'll probably be replacing the stand with a dual monitor desk mount.

...and the dead pixel

http://imgur.com/HgyF0Ye

http://imgur.com/QvXCXtb

http://imgur.com/4rxY2AP

pretty minor.
xenononon
4 Nov 16 #127
Since it's Amazon I'd have absolutely no problems returning for a dead pixel. They are so great about returns, they just send you one out straight away and you return the other one as you see fit.

As a side note, isn't everyone not receiving theirs today/tomorrow though? I can literally order it now off Amazon to arrive tomorrow so all pre-orders should surely be fulfilled now?

Mine has been delivered to my neighbour. Waiting until I get home and hopefully the neighbour is in so I can take it! Can imagine why Amazon were reluctant to leave it at my flat door for half a day!
charlemagnes_joy
4 Nov 16 #128
Looks pretty good, thanks. The dead pixel seems very hard to see and there are plenty of ways for you to try and revive. What are your overall impressions of picture quality?

Mine isn't dispatching until tomorrow and wont be here till Thursday. But I live in Ireland and this is now listed as not available for shipping to Ireland. So I am extremely lucky I got the order in.
Drunk_Si
4 Nov 16 #129
Amazon do tend to be pretty good about returns but at this point I've gone through such a gauntlet of 144hz 1440p screens from different retailers, first of all exhausting the IPS possibilities before giving up on that, then a bit of back and fourth with OCUK and a Dell S2716DG before giving up on that by this point I'm just sick of all the messing about. If ultimately the only thing I can find wrong with it is that one dead pixel I can live with it but I may send them an email and bring up the aggro I had with them over a previous monitor I tried from them and see if they can knock a bit off the price (which was already pretty good) and if they can't and offer to swap it I guess I'll take them up on it at that point, the danger is then that you get one worse than you had in the first place and end up running that old 1440p 144hz monitor gauntlet again. We'll see.

Fingers crossed that yours is all good, let us know later on.

Charlemagnes_joy; picture quality seems pretty good. Obviously the monitor has the qualities that all TN panels do so the viewing angles aren't especially wide and there is a bit of gamma shift but on the whole it all seems good. No problems with text, I haven't noticed any pixel inversion or anything like that, the black levels are alright for a tn panel.

One thing I have noticed is a bit of faint vertical banding on black screens, like loading screens. Possibly something to do with the backlight.
Sfonz
4 Nov 16 #130
Mines turned up today also. One stuck red pixel in a fairly central area, pretty annoying really.
Trying a screen fix website see if I can unstick it because everything else seems fab. Blacks not 100% uniform, but apparently that's expected, and it seems good enough from my perspective.

Edit: The website (and a little pressure, possibly risky) seems to have fixed it. Fingers crossed it stays that way. Very happy if so
G_Barnz
4 Nov 16 #131
Got mine today as well, all in all very nice monitors. I agree that the stand isn't nearly as bad as it looks in the photos, the red is much more subtle and the whole thing feels much sturdier than it looks. The only quibbles I have so far is that when you turn the monitor off, it disconnects the USB hub (I usually turn off my second monitor when gaming, so this is a tad annoying), and the lower bezel sticks out quite far from the screen, so if you have more than one, and angle the screens, you cant quite fit the edges together so there's a slight gap between them.

I also have a dead pixel on one of them, which screen fixer website did you use Sfonz? I'm currently trying jscreenfix but no luck so far...
xenononon
4 Nov 16 #132
Really concerned that you're all reporting dead pixels! Anyway, my initial verdict, my panel came perfect. I've set up the video settings more to my taste (I like it more vibrant but darker than default). All in all very impressed by the picture quality. The speakers are a good touch since I can also play my xbox on it without whacking on headphones when I decide not to play on my PC. My one and only niggle is that whatever coating they used on the monitor is slightly graining the images, but yeah overall very pleased and well worth the £437 that I paid.
jabski
5 Nov 16 #133
I have just unboxed mine and have no dead pixels. Can you please share your picture and color settings
xenononon
5 Nov 16 1 #134
As charlemanges asked, did a quick little video on the monitor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjIBtPE7K4g
xenononon
5 Nov 16 1 #135
I absolutely did not like the settings out of the box as it was too bright. I put briightness and contrast to 50, gamma 2.2, colour temp uiser (at default user setting) and saturate to 125. I really like how it looks at these settings, it may not be to everyone's taste though.
jabski
5 Nov 16 #136
just checked again and found 3 dead pixels in the right corner. Contacting amazon for a replacement now.
Drunk_Si
5 Nov 16 #137
I sent them an email about the dead pixel but indicated that I'd be happy to keep it if they gave me a discount so they're going to refund me £87.51 so 20% off.... so £350 for a 144hz 1440p monitor with one dead pixel that's not in a particularly obnoxious place. I'm happy with that. I already have a 60hz 1440p ips monitor that I'm going to keep as a second display, if I was only going to have one monitor then I'd want it to be absolutely perfect but this discount on a second screen purely for gaming makes it an absolute bargain. I'm well chuffed, I'm actually glad I got one with a dead pixel.
jabski
5 Nov 16 #138
mine had 4 in the end all in the bottom right corner spread over about a inch squared. Got a replacement coming tomorrow so shall see what that one is like.
Drunk_Si
5 Nov 16 1 #139
Yeah if it was like a cluster of them like that it would be a bit too much to put up with, or if there was like one but it was dead centre of the screen where your crosshair usually is. Fingers crossed that your replacement's a good'n.
jabski
6 Nov 16 #140
unfortunately the second one had 3 or 4 dead pixels all next to each other on the left hand side of the screen. Got a refund from Amazon no bother. Shame though as it seemed a nice monitor.
charlemagnes_joy
6 Nov 16 #141
Yikes! I'm not feeling confident at all now. Seems like everyone is having issues? Can we do a straw poll. Of the people who got theirs already, who is happy with the purchase?
yoyo59
6 Nov 16 #142
it's probably because they might of rushed these out to keep up with the orders, when I had mine about 3-4 months ago direct from Acer it was perfect

The quality control on the higher end gaming monitors is shocking, never known anything like it in 20 years of building my own computers, you used to pay good money for a high end monitor and that's what you'd get. With the shoddy PG279Q getting up to the £850 mark I'm just amazed that this part of the market hasn't collapsed in on itself, when will the poor quality outweigh the obscenely inflated price for consumers? There's no way ill ever pay that sort of money for low quality garbage, even if that means leaving PC gaming.

Anyway, I got tired of hunting there are too few panels that don't suck, think I'm just going to buy a cheapo 1080 and see what the market is like in a year. :disappointed:

Honesty, after 20 years this hobby is dying a death for me.
hitman007
7 Nov 16 #145
+1 I've been reading comments of the received monitors in disbelief that people have been happy with dead pixels. Quality control at the manufacturer should be better and I still think this is faulty.

They (the manufacturers) should be ashamed that they believe they can get away with producing sub standard products.

If people keep buying these products, the production of sub standard monitions will continue.

I finally got mine last night, after amazon managed to lose my first delivery...

8 Nov 16 #151
Can I ask exactly how you contacted Amazon ref this. i.e. did you process this as a return and just left a comment regarding the issue?
Drunk_Si
8 Nov 16 1 #152
Sure mate, no problem, they don't make it immediately apparent how to contact them.

At the bottom of the amazon page there's a help link, click on that. The on the next page where you can browse help topics highlight "need more help" and on the right click on "contact us". You can then choose a relevant order and then the order issue, I think I chose "other" and then in the next field selected "other" again, then it asks how you want to contact them and I chose email, then you get a text box where you can finally write to them.

And if it helps this is what I sent;

"Hello there,

I received the monitor I ordered yesterday and after an initial inspection I noticed it has a dead pixel towards the top of the display, left of centre.

http://i.imgur.com/4rxY2AP.jpg

Now I know I could return it, but even though my work is pretty flexible I already took quite a few days off a couple of months ago waiting around for monitor deliveries and collections when I tried to buy a different monitor off you guys. So while I can probably get time off to return the monitor and receive a replacement if I need to I'd rather not have to. As the dead pixel isn't dead centre I could probably live with it. Is there any sort of discount you guys could offer so that I keep this display and forego the rigmorale of taking days off to receive and return more monitors, please?

Either way, thanks in advance for your time and your reply. Cheers.

Simon. "
