january/febuary are probably the best months to travel south east asia. I lived in Thailand for a year and it was 30-35 degrees but the humidity is bearable compared to march - may.

Saw this post late - Chinese New Year is often the driest and hottest time of the year in Malaysia (and next year it falls at the end of January) so Kuala Lumpur will be dry and hot then. (think 34-38 degrees Celcius).
Capitol Hotel is only a 3 star hotel but the location is pretty good as it's close to the Golden Triangle area of KL. If anyone here bought this deal, the hotel is almost next to the biggest (and most famous) technology shopping mall in Malaysia, Low Yat Plaza.

Seminyak is just up the road from Kuta.
Kuta is party central and the Australian ibiza.
Nice if that's what your after. The area is very westernised in terms of tourism and shops but still plenty of local stuff going on.
Stay clear of the street wagons selling food (warung) unless you like to be ill.
If you need to change money in local exchanges double check it before you leave the counter.
Car travel is hard due to small roads, crazy traffic and locals who have evolved their own driving laws.
I suggest getting off the beaten track a bit, head inland to somewhere more rural. Ubud is a popular retreat and home of spiritualism with a nice laid back atmosphere and cafe culture.
Go on step further, rent a bike and tour the island. Out side of the large areas traffic is easier to negotiate. Plenty of marvellous sites to see with cheap accommodation from £5 per night, room for 2, including breakfast. Though admitted this may be a little more expensive from when I went 5 years ago.

I called them last night and operator said no deals left at £469. I bought it at £488. Debit card fee is 1% so came to £492. She also said that most of the packages she had sold had a 2 hour lay over at KL before going to Bali however, none of those were left so I was given a flight with a 5 hour lay over! Oh well, booked now...

You should ask for a refund for the debit card fees as their it's & c's state no charge.

expect temperatures hovering in the mid 30s Celcius and min 80% humidity in Indonesia (Bali) and Malaysia (KL) almost all year long. Jan-Mar will see higher rainfall than usual. Personally i'd rather fly on Emirates but Malaysia Airlines seems to be drawing people to fly with them again with cheap fares. If you haven't any phobias with flying, its a 12-13 hour direct flight from Heathrow to KL. Seminyak is a nicer spot to be than Kuta in Bali.

I have heard and seen on the web that Bali beaches are filthy and covered in all sorts of things from plastic bottles to syringes.
Has anyone actually seen this at first hand or is it not really that bad?

Bali is around 4.000km south of Thailand, that's like giving travel advice to Morocco based on the weather in England.
Having said that it's not rocket science to type 'climate Bali' in google to find out that January/February are the wettest months of the year while temperature is pretty constant no matter which season.

Has anyone actually booked this then? Are the flights at ridiculous times or with very long stopovers?
