One of the cheapest GTX 970s so far - but prices will likely start dropping slightly further now that the GTX 1060 3GB has been announced. The GTX 1060 3GB is a little faster but of course loses some VRAM and in general will slot in at a slightly higher price for comparable cards with good cooling like this one, so there are pros and cons for each. As with all Zotac cards, this also has a 5 year warranty.

Not quite true. There are no SLI fingers on the 1060, so it can only communicate via the PCIe bus, without a bridge, so only applications that support MDA (Multi-Display Adapter) or LDA Explicit (Linked Display Adapter) will work. Only a few games, such as Ashes, support explicit multi-GPU with Dx12. For the few games that do support a dual-1060 configuration expect fast results, but it's definitely NOT a standard SLI config.

what a silly way to market the gtx1060. one with a useless 6gb which cannot be sli and now 3gb instead of lets say 4gb. should have been 4gb from the beginning or 6gb better and the chance to sli

It can do SLI it's just that Nvidia doesn't want you to as it would outperform the 1080 for probably £200 less than the cost of one

Not sure if this is true but the 3GB GTX 1060 has 128 fewer Cuda cores too, so not just VRAM that is cut down >

Well you know, the new card's have four numbers in their name so that must mean anything less must be rubblish. lol
But yeah, it is a good deal for a 970, still a power house of a card, and at that price bang for buck through the roof, of course the irony here will be all the sites who jumped on the 970 memory click bait issue now fawining over a more expensive card with less memory, how do you broach that elephant in the room. lol

Yes I know, what meant is that Nvidia didn't put the SLI hardware on purpose so you wouldn't be able to do it because two of these would outperform a single 1080 for a lot cheaper at the moment. Even with the 1080/1070 you have to get permission from them to do SLI for more than two cards which is call BS on.
I guess that's what happens when there's not real competition.

No reason at all to buy a 970 at this price, needs to be £150 at the most with the 1060 3GB and 470 out

None of us here are likely in a position to state "needs to be" - unless you have inside knowledge?
This is a decent price for the performance, and around £80 less than I paid last year, which is a pretty good saving.
We should be grateful for what we have access to.

The GTX 970 performs better than the RX 470 in DX11 titles and overclocks much better too. The GTX 1060 performs a little better but loses some VRAM and still doesn't overclock quite as well. Both competing cards are also at least a little more for similarly good coolers.

Ok, but if you buy this over a 1060 or 470/480 then you're just wasting your money.

Buy 2, SLI and have 1080 performance for half the price

Not when a 1080 outperforms 980s in SLI...

Best card for this price all day.
People going to pc gaming are so lucky with these price drops. You can basically build a pc that can play all games at 1080p for 500 quid now...

very disputable, I do not even think it does outperform 2x970

Of course it does. Easily. Not to mention that sli not always works and it doesn't scale great in a lot of games.

So is the GTX970 still the best bang for bucks these days? I currently have onboard graphics (CPU i5 4670) and never intended to start PC gamning (got an XBox One) but fancy dabbling, nothing mega serious, but I always like to buy the things that give me the best performance and best value for money.
I started off looking at the 750ti, then the 950, then the 960...but the 970 has always been in the back of my mind. I'm also conscious that I don't want something that's going to force me to upgrade my 500w Corsair PSU and that isn't going to sound like a 747 taking off .
Is the 970 at this price, or 2nd hand off EBay the way to go?

£190 for a GTX 970 isn't bad... but you're just £40 off a 6GB GTX 1060 which clearly outperforms the 970 in every game, and has a lower power consumption to boot. If you're spending nearly £200 on a graphics card anyway, £230 gets you a noticeably faster card and probably a lot more longevity. And you'll make back a tenner on the power savings! (Eventually )

I'm swayed by a £50 Amazon gift voucher though, and 1060's are in short supply on there. The 970 is calling me :-)

Surely you can buy anything on amazon with that, it's just like 50 quid cash money.

If you're wanting the best performance for your money, you can't beat a 970 at £180~, it all depends on what you plan to use it for? The jump from £180 to £240 is 25% more and if you're playing at 1080p, there's no reason to spend 25% more on a card.
There are warehouse deals on Amazon for the GTX 970 G1 edition (overclocked, 3 fans, very silent and illuminated windforce logo with a backplate) for £181 with a damaged box but otherwise brand new.
