Just a heads up
If upgrading to this from the Xbox One just for the 4k Bluray player. and you have a home cinema receiver (avr) or similar note that this unit will not passthrough / bitstream Lossless HD audio such as;
Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS HD Master Audio, DTS-X, Auro-3D
This may affect a number of people thinking it as a cheaper way to get a 4k Bluray player and wanting to make use of modern HD audio formats to accompany their 4k Video
If you're upgrading or buying first time just because it's a bit smaller or because of the built in PSU (thanks ukting), or you listen to the sound through your TV, then this won't affect you so much :smiley:

Also according to Digital Foundry the Xbox One S runs games at a better framerates than the older model.

In addition, I know some fans have asked for new audio functionality including bitstream support and we're evaluating that as a possible feature in a future update.

Or if you use a system in a box etc... We have Sonos for a number of reasons and the Xbox passes through dolby 5.1 fine.

I fear things may be even worse than this. My son got his Xbox One S yesterday and is very disappointed. He has it hooked up to a new Hisense 4k tv he bought just a couple of weeks ago. The console can check the tv for compatibility and it appears that it is sadly lacking in that it can't play games (or anything else) in 4k 10 bit. This includes the output from a 4k bluray player and probably the forthcoming Xbox Scorpio. We thought a 4k tv would just naturally be capable of playing 4k output from any source. He likes the design of the new Xbox One S and controllers but it has given nothing over his Xbox one other than being a bit smaller. The Xbox One S can be set to upscale existing games to 4K but we found the picture was much superior to leave the output at 1080p and let the Hisense do the upscaling.
We are not saying that the Xbox One S or the Hisense TV (sorry not sure which model) are bad products - just that people don't realise the compatibiltiy issues. We are not particularly techie but it seems to us that the 4k tvs out there in most people's homes will only support 4k 8 bit (unless they have a very recent HDR model). So if you are buying the Xbox One S to use as a 4K Bluray player I think you may be disappointed. Check if your TV suppoprts 4k 10 bit first. All this is only what we have gathered and surmised from our limited research yesterday. I know there are a lot of knowledgeable techie TV bods that frequent here so please jump in and correct/advise accordingly.

£350 seems steep to me, I bought a 1TB Xbox One a few months back for £200, apart from the extra 1TB memory and smaller design does this warrant the jump in price? Makes you wonder how much the Scorpio will be.

As well as redefined control, 4k blu Ray player, 4k streaming and games upscaled to 4k. Top and bottom is all depends if you have a 4k tv or not

I was fixated on upgrading just because of the design + power supply changes. I had no interest in the media side of things.
Now I'm happy with my forza limited edition one which I ended up getting factory sealed from Amazon for £160.

That is exactly how I felt - fixated on upgrading to the S purely because of the smaller design and power supply changes - I've decided to sell my xbox one and not bother getting another in any shape or size - its a trap for me - upgrading for the sake of having the latest incarnation - barely gets used anyway...

Don't hold your breath, they promised this back in 2014, and people have been asking for it since launch of the Original XBox One
The XBox One came with no bitstreaming of even 5.1 compressed audio formats, they promised it in a future update but they still didn't deliver native bitstreaming. The Xbox One still can’t do native bitstream of compressed formats straight off the disc, everything gets converted.

To be balanced, most people are going to have DTS and normal 5.1 Dolby.
So you get the rest of the benefits, much s3xier system. Nice controller (unless you have the elite :wink: )
HDR10 on games, and movies. For me, I can ditch the external disk I had for the original box, with that and the PSU going its much tidier.
Wait till you see one in the flesh, its much nicer than I thought it was going to be. Looks sweet standing on its end with the included stand. The buttons (off/on and disk tray) are nicer, and better placed too.

Ah, but you see it doesn't pass through Dolby unmolested from the disc, it decodes it then repackages it.
it's just unnecessary molesting of your audio that introduces loss.
For example, if your output was Dolby Digital 5.1 and the source was DTS, it will magically give you Dolby Digital 5.1 :wink:
Anyway, if it works for you then fine, Sonos is hardly a barometer for good quality home cinema though :smiley:

All that techie stuff and the obscene amount they're charging for an extra 1.5TB aside, white consoles look ****. That's enough for me to hold off buying it.
Those people who think both the Neo and Scorpio will be reasonably priced just need to look at how much Sony and MS charge for extra HDD to understand these consoles aren't going to come in under £600. Wouldn't be surprised if the Scorpio was priced around the £800 considering it will come with extra whistles and bells alongside MS very expensive HDD pricing.

The Playstation Neo is Sonys version of the Xbox One S
Scorpio is the next generation Xbox, ie brand new console
I would very much doubt the Neo would cost anywhere near £600, it wouldn't sell very well

Looks like it's not just me; I have a 2016 model Samsung 4K HDR TV and I think the picture looks better @ 1080p with the TV upscaling and the Xbox not.
Got mine Monday and was disappointed it wasn't 4K out of the box, luckily this was fixed with an update yesterday

The Hisense is a terrible tv for gaming anyway due to its crappy response times.
No point in getting an entry level tv & hoping external next gen hardware will run smoothly on it.

We would have to disagree with that. My son is a seasoned gamer and has no issues at all with response times on the Hisense. In fact he is happy with it in all respects other than discovering it seems he won't be able to play 4k bluray discs or any other 4k 10 bit output to it.

Xbox support said you need a 'UHD PREMIUM / HDR1000' television to use the 4K features. So unless you have a £1000-2000 television it's just a slimmer console with no graphical benefits. I bought this 'UHD 4K crystal colour' TV mainly for the Xbox one s too..
There needs to be some rules for advertising 4K televisions. This is stupid.

To be able to support all features on your new One S, make sure "HDMI UHD Color" is enabled on the HDMI port your One S is hooked up to, otherwise you will be greeted with a bunch of red X's saying your TV isn't compatible.
Settings > Picture > Expert Settings > HDMI UHD Color

It doesn't matter what make & year model it is, it needs to be UHD Premium to work with the S fully.
One of the reasons I'm awaiting the Scorpio to confirm which 60-65" OLED 4K TV to buy at the same time.
They should have also underpinned the standards by mid 2017 as well.

Allow HDR and allow 4K are both enabled pal, it's the TV.
I would just buy another TV but knowing my luck it wouldn't work with the Scorpio next year.
Only paid £191 for the slim so I cannot complain too much I guess. Feeling cheated over the TV tho as currys suggested this model for the Xbox one S.

I am more than happy with my fat Halo edition Xbone but have been very tempted with the prospect of the GoW edition S when it drops so did a bit of research weeks ago.
I ain't at a tech wizard yet even I discovered within five minutes of doing that research there would be bundles of 4K telly sets that don't seamlessly 'play nicely' with everthing the S does/will be able to bring to the table as such.
So all those people who have just gone out and blown 350 or 400 quid on this machine only to discover their TV ain't fully compatible have only got themselves to blame.
The moral of the story is always the same, use a bit of common sense before opening your wallet :smirk: sorry to be so harsh but it is what it is

My 2015 Samsung didnt have all the green ticks until I put it into HDMI 1. It seems thats the only port which allowed the HDMI UHD Colour option. Hope this helps.

My son tried a 4k Blu-ray yesterday going to his Hisense and while it did actually play he again found the best result was obtained setting the output to 1080p and letting the tv upscale. For true 4k you need a 4k 10 bit tv. So to sum up, while he loves the design of the new S, it hasn't given him any better quality picture over his Xbox one.

It will look far better you must not have a hdmi 2.0 port on you're 4K tv as 4X 1080p will look far better than 1080p
