Why do these posts always degrade into slanging matches? Not interested in the so-called what's best. I made my decision to get one of these long ago based on reviews etc etc. Long thought they too expensive but as I see it the 2TB model is currently around £80 so this 4TB seems really good value (for this particular item not for other drives in general.)

As far as I'm concerned it's a thing of beauty which matches my other equipment beautifully. I hope this post helps other like minded people seeking a bargain for the same item.

Always around this prise but they tend to have overheating issues when used in the enclosure I guess most normal people do not know this they just use it but if you use different software it flags it up.

There is no need to have 7200 drives when they are external all it is doing is generating more heat which is why those drives with 7200 tend to have overheating issues (normal people don't know this need to use software to see this) but it's a selling numbers people alays think because it's faster it will be better retail places love to use this as sales pitches.

I have a WD black in my PC I would never use it in one of these enclosures no benefit at all and it runs warm in PC.

If some one has purchased one open it up see what is inside also don't forget to change the parking time if it is non black drive.

Why is there less need for a fast drive in an external enclosure than as an internal drive?

That said the Green drives in my WD Elements got hot and were noisy before I de-cased them, I'd imagine thermal and noise wouldn't be comfortable with a 7200 rpm drive.

usb isn't all that it is more about burst speed and the controller chips tend to be limited anyway people will claim this is not the case anymore but it still is (benchmarks are not that great it's better to test with real files different sizes which does show this up)

The WD black is for gamers so putting it in usb is a waste (only console people would use it for that and it's not advertised for that) what WD do is they put in which ever stock they have left so it is luck of the draw what you get inside (they do not advisertise this as being quicker drive that is maplins)

I wouldn't trust a black in one of these I can see it getting very hot WD state upto 95c but I don't trust that when you start running at 70c you are killing the drive not instant but it will not last long this is why laptops always use the lower speed drives.

USB 3 has way more bandwidth than a black can saturate so the speed benefit is still there over a slower drive

£5 more (if you have Prime) gets you a 5TB Toshiba from Amazon. :smiley:
