i had these same specs in an Acer desktop from ebuyer. it ran Boderlands 2 on medium settings pretty well.

It's a fair price for respectable specs. The mechanical drive is fairly dire but then I guess for some people larger volume is more appropriate than fast solid state storage. 4gb of ram is going to be handy for those who leave dozens of chrome tabs open (I'm guilty of this on my systems that have enough memory) and the bigger screen even though it's low res will avoid windows scaling issues. And I'm assuming it's an A4 5000 cpu so it'll outperform your typical budget Atom tablet.

I wouldn't personally subject myself to it though. My ~800g Dell Venue already feels weighty enough that it spends very little of it's life as a tablet. I'd say with the bulk and weight of this it's going to spend it's entire life docked, which means it is needlessly top heavy (although it will keep you lap cool, so silver lining).

A mechanical drive feels stone age once you've gotten used to solid state, external storage or NAS make so much more sense for volume storage.

My 1290x800 8.9" tablet is hardly pin sharp so this screen will be pretty dire to good eyes.

This is a reasonably tempting proposition for a parents system I'll admit. Maybe even the young'uns.

As for the free upgrade to Windows 10, that offer ended didn't it? You can still get it if you enable accessibility options I think but it's not available as a straight free upgrade anymore so I suspect Argos just haven't updated their description.
fidgit101
10 Aug 16 2 #8
Surely that is no longer the case since Microsoft have recently closed the free upgrade offer?

as mentioned in the previous post, you can still get the W10 upgrade for free, check out Freebies for details or indeed my own W10 thread

Having a google of the EAN brought this up on PC World Business site.

https://www.pcworldbusiness.co.uk/catalogue/item/N072791W

It listed the processor as AMD A4-1200 APU. Checking that processor on benchmark gave it a pass mark value of a lowly 639. My little atom processor in my Miix 3 is much higher. How this performs with 4gb ram compared with 2gb ram on my Miix 3 I have no idea but providing the ram isn't been maxed on the Miix 3 then I would have thought the Miix will be faster in general surfing and accessing programs.

Avoid, the AMD A4 processor is painfully slow
Smartguy1
10 Aug 16 1 #15
Haha, I not sure if I read your post. I was referring to BigYoSpeck's post made on an assumption of the processor. It's crap. How old is this machine. We have an old Acer which came with windows 7, bought in 2011 that's running an early i3 processor with a pass mark of 2416. Now I know windows 8 follows 7 and our old Acer was the base model at the time. No wonder they selling them off cheap. AMD must have done a special deal with HP to dump a slow processor on a machine that must be years old by today's standards. I see that HP also did a 30t which has an i3 processor which would be the one to buy. I think Argos have got mixed up on the original rrp which would be more like it for the one below.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-Satellite-13-3-inch-Touchscreen-Processor/dp/B00GO4O804

Here is what notebookcheck said about the performance.

Now putting aside benchmarks, how do we feel about the system experience? As long as the APU is not simultaneously running multiple tasks, it can run the W30Dt smoothly. However, when it is at high load (a virus scan, copying files or an installation), the tables turn, switching between open windows or inputting commands are heavily slowed down. Overall, we felt the experience was quite close to that of a Clovertrail Atom and far lower than that of a Bay Trail Atom. The results of PCMark 7 support his assertion (see computation scores). The IdeaTab Miix 10 (+23%), the Transformer Book T100TA (+93%) and the HP Split x2 with its Core i3-3229Y (+300%) beat our test model by wide margins.

This was tested early 2014 so to have a processor this slow at this time is inexcusable on Toshiba's part when the Baytrail processor was available, perhaps not to them maybe. In all other areas it appears to offer good value for money and will be fine for surfing and streaming movings but for multi tasking, perhaps forget it. Shame as with a different processor this could be a cracking machine for the price offered. No stock to collect which my guess would be the same everywhere but is available for delivery.

jaydeeuk1
10 Aug 16 #17
Never thought I'd say this... I'd rather have an atom.

IMO, if you see any laptop with an AMD chip, run for the hills. Will either be utterly slow compared to Intels' offerings, or offer some performance but have crap battery life and run hot.
Smartguy1 to jaydeeuk1
11 Aug 16 #19
I have never been a lover of AMD either. This particular model would have been a decent buy with the atom but I guess at early 2014 they would have been slower than the ones available today. I was looking at a Samsung Pro windows tablet on ebay and that has a lowly atom chip in it about the same speed. Think it was a 2760 or something around those numbers.
amour3k
10 Aug 16 #18
So, in layman's terms, this is essentially more of a giant Tablet, then that of a mini Laptop then, huh? (so to speak?), or ..... :-)
BigYoSpeck to amour3k
11 Aug 16 #22
It's full size in laptop terms, in fact the screen part will be considerably heftier than a normal laptop. As a tablet 1kg is silly heavy, you aren't casually holding that in one hand for long. Realistically this is going to spend it's life as a laptop.

Windows isn't an amazing tablet OS and has very few proper touch apps. I've got a Dell Venue 11 and that's 800g. It occasionally get's taken from it keyboard dock if I'm taking it to show someone something on it. But Windows does work best as a hybrid OS. Full mouse and keyboard functionality is leaps and bounds beyond Android or IOS and touch just becomes a natural addition to that interface. But don't think of this as an iPad or Android tablet replacement as it just doesn't work well for that kind of casual use.
EQL
11 Aug 16 #20
The EAN suggests the CPU is dual core, 1.0GHz, consumes 3.9W and is a tablet CPU, slower than the CPU in a Linx 7, 8 or 10. More detail on the CPU:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6978/amds-2013-elite-mobility-platform-aka-temash
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+A4-1200+APU (a 639 passmark)
Compare with the Linx 7 CPU:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Atom+Z3735G+%40+1.33GHz (a 915 passmark)

The W30t is Intel-based, but the W30Dt is AMD-based according to this 2013 review of the W30t:
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/review/windows-tablets/toshiba-satellite-w30t-hands-on-review-3467533/
BigYoSpeck
11 Aug 16 #21
That being the case then the Argos specifications are wrong as the A4 1200 is a 1ghz cpu and considerably slower than an Atom. I wouldn't bother with it if it is because even with 4gb of ram it's going to slow to a crawl doing anything that memory intensive.

A bottom of the line AMD laptop APU?

Nice form factor. Nice price. But it would truly horrible in use. Don't think even adding an SSD could make it usable for me.

11 Aug 16 2 #26
Pretty cold from me, that CPU is very, VERY poor. If you compare it to the super anemic Intel Atom Z3735 I have in my Asus X205ta it gets battered.

http://i.imgur.com/zdBvA9Q.png

Also a 13 inch tablet with only a roughly 3 hour battery life? No thanks. Just buy a cheap standard 13 inch laptop and forget about the useless detached screen features.

11 Aug 16 #31
The main question is: WHY THE HELL somebody build a laptop or PC or anything using 4GB RAM and just 1GHz CPU??? Anyone would simply save a bit on the RAM and add the money to the processor. Don't the Toshiba experts, designing the laptop (and getting a massive **** for this kind of job) know what they doing?
BigYoSpeck to YepYep
11 Aug 16 #32
Next time your in an electronic department check how many tablets list their cpu speed or just say 'quad core'. This device was designed in excel. It's also probably not as bad as people make out for light tasks.
Hootwo to YepYep
12 Aug 16 #35
It's designed to hit a spec at a price point - detachable, touch, 1.5Ghz, 4GB, 500GB.
Even when introduced, reviewers found it slow - review here
Remarkably it was offered at £529 but that was years ago.
Sadly, most buyers won't realise it is slow as a dog until they've used it a bit, then most won't be bothered to return it.
This is one of Toshiba's duds - avoid.
To get a usable convertible, pay more for e.g. Asus T100, which can sometimes be had for less than £200
For this money, look at an Asus X205TA laptop (not fast, but adequate and super light), or a Linx tablet which is cheaper.
Smartguy1
11 Aug 16 #33
On the Argos site though it lists the processor as being quad core and someone even asked a question about it on the Argos Q & A section and reply was quad core. Argos are well know to get product information wrong probably because their marketing department doesn't have a product to check or have no idea that Toshiba made PC's and only made tv's lol. They really need people who understand what the product is, what it does and have the knowledge to check what even the manufacturer has said because sometimes they get it wrong too.

I would rather believe PC World's description of the Toshiba which tallies with the tech report from Notebookcheck. Argos need to be really careful because it could be classed as miss-selling and their descriptions always seem to state a higher spec for a lower model.
Smartguy1
11 Aug 16 #34
Laptop Outlet have sold some of these and confirms the processor as I first stated as the AMD A4-1200 APU which as someone else pointed out is only a 1GHz processor dual core. I think my second Packard Bell bought more than 10 years ago had one that speed lol.

I know Toshiba don't make their own tv's anymore under a certain size. No doubt made by Vestel. Just wondered who makes their laptops
johnnyd57uk
12 Aug 16 #36
I got as far as putting this in the basket and heading for the checkout. Then I decided to be sensible and check the reviews. What a shocker. Why on earth did they put such a duff cpu in what might have been an ok laptop for home use (Theres no way most people would carry around a 13.3 tablet) Anyways it sounds like this is nigh on unuseable for anything bar slowwwwww browsing.
Smartguy1
12 Aug 16 #37
They may have just wanted to use up old stock. They would have been better off just throwing these processors in the skip and charging us an extra 20 or 30 quid for a better one. Quite strange to see they do an identical model running an i3 which is what they should have stuck with. Not good seeing the intel atom were out also at this point which are far better. I got one of the refurb Lenovo 300's from Argos. Opened it today and nice to see it has 4gb ram, 500gb hard drive and an older dual core atom processor but it offers great value at £104.99. Not switched it on yet but that's what it says on the box.

got his through the post today and after half an hour of swearing its going back to argos , from the box EVERYTHING crashes , internet takes about a minute per page , opening folders freezes for an age, even the task manager called it a day and jumped ship. this is THE WORST laptop ive bought, would be better off getting a 10 year old chinese knockoff running windows 95! utter ****!
