Good price and decent quality as they do last long enough and are hot for longer than most coal

Depends on the make.
Lump wood - is pure wood oxidized to make charcoal. Burn hotter for shorter
Briquettes - is compressed wood mixed with chemicals to help it burn. Burns at a lower temp but lasts longer.
I always use a mixture to keep an even high heat.
I always use a

BBQ in the UK is a pretty unpleasant experience - very difficult to have one spontaniously.

If your after decent briquettes then there's only only brand to buy.....Weber takes 20 mins to hit up and lasts for hours. Absolutely amazing and well worth the additional pennies. £6.49 for 4kg at Homebase

So more than just a few additional pennies for less weight....

Aussie heat beads I find to be very good. Give less soot than the weber coals and burn at consistent temps. Anyone who says bbq can't be spontaneous is wrong! Get a weber chimney starter and stick a firelighters under it, 20 mins ish you're good to go.
I've never had very good experiences with cheaper briquettes as they burn out very quickly and leave loads of ash to get blown over the food. Heat beads are around £6.50 per 4kg bag, but you don't need to use as much.

Weber coals unbeatable imo as they last a good 2-3 hours, also recommend a weber chimney starter.
Quick search on Google and you can get 5 x 8KG bags for only £50 delivered.
Heat beads beat weiner everytime for premium briquettes for those of us that do real low and slow BBQ, lump wood of course better overall but briquettes for unattended snakes.
This supagrill stuff is fine for shorter cooks of 2 hours and under.

WHY do charcoal briquettes leave so much ash? Because MONEY!
TL:DW - There's a lot of ash leftover because there's around 10% incombustible material in there.
