This is a great price cor a very popular HDMI2.0/HDCP2.2 A/V receiver. Personally i prefer the denon x2200 or pioneer 930, however these Sony amps seem to hold their value far better than the competition.
This is popular with projector enthusiasts as it has twin HDMI out.
Believe Onkyo are highly regarded by some but as they are an 'Unknown' brand probably best to stick with names like Sony Bush or Alba....

I once met a guy from Loughborough who said to avoid Onkyo as he felt they weren't up to same standard as Sony... this amp therefore looks a good deal.

How many discs are encoded Atmos? 10? There aren't that many with 7.1, and the vast majority are 5.1 !
At this price point is just isn't worth looking for pointless formats the amp doesn't have the capability for either.

I have a 1040 and I have to say I am more than happy with it. I think some of the newer models have less ports though for some reason but sound and feature wise it's great.

At 70 Wpc with all the channels driven this certainly is a better buy than most
I upgraded from my Onkyo to this, the difference is amazing. The Sony quality shines through, it will teach me to try and buy cheap and chinese in Onkyo. Next time I'll pay for quality.

£297 at Hi-Fi Confidential with free delivery and free 1.5m HDMI cable.
I've not done much research on this but I think they're 5.1.2 now with the .2 being either ceiling speakers or high speakers angled to rebound audio off the ceiling. Using this setup a 7.1 amp should be able to handle it. I don't see the price point as an issue either as this was a top end product. Also would it be possible to implement this with a firmware update ?
As for how films support Atmos you could say the same about any audio format that is newly released. Cinema is embracing the format so why aren't Sony ?

there are a few amps out there now for this price that support atmos , even at this price not worth it because of the lack of atmos .

Reading user reviews of the Denon 2200w etc many people seem to be equally impressed with the benefits of Atmos speakers using virtually created soundfields as they do with properly encoded Atmos material.
