This is the top of the 2016 standard range Blu-Ray Players. Lowest non-promotional price ever according to camelcamelcamel (though I happen to know this was briefly the same price on Prime Day).
With the exception of the UHP-H1 (which requires you to part with nearly £400) this is the top of the main Sony range for 2016. Big selling points for me are the Bluetooth connectivity and the (not advertised) ability to play back SACDs. Bluetooth works well with my Sony headset.

Great deal. The BDP-S7200 is actually top of the standard players though.

seems to be the same price across multiple retailers including argos, Sevenoaks and Hifi Confidential. it's a good price but I'm reluctant to spend money on a bluray player when I'm expecting multiple new entrants to the 4K bluray player market over the next few months - which will undoubtedly bring the price of the Samsung down closer to £200 by Black Friday

Might as well buy a Xbox One S for £250 and have both a proper 4k bluray player and a games console thrown in too

Except it can't bitstream HD audio (yet).

I really wish that they hadn't abandoned their plans for a PVR add-on as it would make this a fantastic all around machine.

Plus ability to play 3d discs. However £150 more too.

Strange decision by Sony to release a new range of blu-ray players without including a 4K model - especially as one of them costs £400.

Sony were a big proponent of the original Bluray format but they haven't been so hot about UHD-BD. I don't think they are very confident about the prospects of physical media period.
After 10 years Bluray only has about 35% of the physical market share (DVD 65%). UHD-BD will be even less successful, and if it gets market share it will do so simply by eating into Bluray's small share, not by expanding the market overall. In 5 years I expect 60/30/10 DVD/Bluray/UHD-BD. And the whole pie will be much smaller.

Excuse my ignorance but surely if you have a 4K TV then the TV itself will natively handle the upscaling to 4K - there's no need for the Blu-Ray player to do it?

The tv will upscale but it's making up the 'missing pixels'. Otherwise you could say 'I've got a 4k tv and dvd player why do I need blu ray?'
Native 4k films will look sharper than 1080 ones.
Of course whether that really matters unless you're sitting 3 feet away from a 70" tv is another question ;D
Edit. Ignore me. Misread.

Correct, but it depends on which has the better scaler. I would hazard a good guess at your tv having a better one than this player.

All I need is 3d as I have a blu ray player which is non modifiable and a smart 3d tv as I don't have a 4k TV , should I buy this on an Xbox

You should be able to find a decent 3D blu-ray player for £50 or less.

I wonder if the newly leaked PS4 slim does indeed play UHD Blu Ray's because currently the best value UHD player on the market is the Xbox One S at £250 and Sony would be crazy to do a refresh on not at least equal it's functionality.
I would be slightly apprehensive of buying a normal BR player now as we are just on the cusp of mass 4K content adoption. If a player can already be put in a game console for only £250 I see UHD player plummeting in price faster than the original BR ones did.

Just a standard bluray drive in the Slim PS4. At the moment it's just an Xbox One S that supports it

In theory all TV's already upscale otherwise you would see your image as a tiny square in the middle of your screen. Consumers have been slightly mislead about up scaling players because your TV does it anyway. However the difference lies in the quality of your on board scaler. Often the scalers in dedicated players are better unless your a rocking a very expensive TV, also its scaled at the source which can help things.

Based on the photoes and videos keaked, the slim PS4 is a budget, cost saving model to be offered cheaper and it seems there is no UHD logo anywhere to be found on packaging and console itself. No not really,Sony is in a completely different situation compared to Xbox, they have sold much more consoles and have much firmer grip on the market, maybe a cheaper PS4 (without UHD) works better for them as they can expand their territory even further by targeting the budget conscious consumers.and of course they will have the Neo for more hardcore gamers with UHD and all.
But for MS things are different, and maybe they are trying to catch up as much as they can, hence re-design of the current One with some extra bells and whistles (UHD).

I'm looking for another 3D player but prices
seem to have steadied or risen. Have you actually seen the 5500 for £50 or less, as it seems to be £70 to £100 on most sites I've checked, and even then stock is doubtful. If you have I'd be interested in the link thanks.

I'm still shocked only 35% accounted for bluray adopters and 65% DVD !! I suspected this as I feel it's not a priority in the UK but us early adopters are who love tech only accommodate for the small minority of audiophiles and videophiles! It's sad as even friends of mine thinks there's not much difference between DVD and bluray WTF!! They need there eyes tested

Yes - that's what I've always been told - always let your TV (where possible) do the upscaling to 4K
