Looks like an amazing card, seems to be only 2 - 4 frames behind the Rx 480 8gb at 1080p according to digital foundry. I may get this over the Rx 480.

Depends on the resolution mainly, this card is aimed at 1080p so there are very few games that use the whole 4gb of memory. As the resolution goes up obviously there is a need for more vram but I'm pretty sure 4gb is fine for the target audience of this card.

Ridiculous pricing, I hope no one falls for this and buys it. 480 4GB Reference cards launched at £175

There are lots of 470s below £190. But the point being that this is the cheapest option I could find for someone who may be on a tighter budget and doesn't want to spend the extra £25 on what is basically a different designed cooler and probably 1fps more performance.

IMHO this is too close to the price of the RX480, which has been down to around £175 in the past (admittedly its a bit more now). I thought this would come in around £150 to give some separation otherwise I don't see why you wouldn't just go for the 480 and have a bit of performance surplus for future titles as there just isn't enough of a saving here.
Hopefully, prices will fall when it's been out for a while but the way the other new cards are actually raising in price it's dubious....

Wouldn't the extra ram be a lot more future proofed?

The thing is extra vram isn't a good thing if the card isn't fast enough to utilise is. At 1080p in most games 4gb isn't saturated and the games that are turning down anti-aliasing a bit usually fixes it.
I am curious with this though. My brother is looking to upgrade his r9 270 to something that copes a bit better at 1080p. It's just difficult judging whether his Athlon 860x is going to bottleneck it significantly or not.

Agreed. Battlefield 1 alpha used about 3.8GB at 1080 ultra, and Rainbow 6 ultra textures run flawlessly on 4GB (though I didn't check how much VRAM was used) so I don't anticipate 4GB being an issue at 1080, at least not until the graphical demands are so much higher that you'd need a significantly stronger card anyway
Edit: I'm using an R9 290 4GB which is marginally weaker than this card

I have a DVI only monitor, this card is HDMI, is it perfectly fine to use an adapter?
Was hoping the Nitro would be cheaper. As it stands it's only ~£20 less than the 480 version.

Yes an adapter will work fine

What makes the 4GB 470 better than the 480?
I thought the 480 was great at using a lot less power, is the 470 even better?

its not better but it's cheaper and is very close in terms of performance, especially at 1080p which is what the card is designed for. This uses even less power still though.

I know it looks like it's a reference cooler but it's not, it's Sapphire's own built cooler and is apparently quite good.

Yea I was hoping for £150 to be honest. I don't think this card will drop in price though at least until Nvidia release the gtx 1050 or whatever they decide to call it.

R9 380 draws a lot more power. Don't know if they're comparable.

Hmm,I did a quick check on a power calculator and a 450W PSU (i've got a high quality, Super Flower Golden Green HX 450W) seemed just about ok.. Would you think that's ok? thanks
Scotsmania
4 Aug 16#17
A Superflower 450W will be fine for it, your money would be better spent on the 470 though. People's complaints about it are comparing it to a 480 but a 470 is significantly better than a 380, more than enough that the extra £30 is warranted.
Mrman123
4 Aug 16#18
Okay thanks for that, even a reference design would be fine for the 470? as they are usually cheaper. cheers
Scotsmania
4 Aug 161#19
Yes but bear in mind that the one linked here isn't actually a reference design even though it looks like it, Sapphire did their own design of the cooler to improve it.

just seen the reviews for this, wow what a card its about 2-3 fps less than the rx480 its a beast for the money

4 Aug 161#21
I just read a review about this card and the fan is not very good according to the review if you overclock the card the sound is extremely loud and it didnt keep the card very quiet at stock clocks. Me personally i have a 970GTX and have no need to upgrade till next gen cards but if i were going for a card its a no brainer to go for the 480. The 470 gets within around 5 fps when overclocked of the reference 480 but remember the 480 overclocks aswell and the 480 is a faster card full stop and the 8gb version gives it future proofing.the 470 is overpriced. Go for the 480 and if buget will allow get the 8gb version and dont settle.
Mrman123
4 Aug 16#22
hmm that's why I was thinking of going g for the R9 380 save a few bob too.
The difference in performance between the 470 4gb and 480 4gb is very minimal. The difference between the 380 and 470 though is substantial.

ok thanks guys, so 380 ruled out, now might just get the 4GB 480 if I can get it around £175?

All they've done is added a backplate and coloured the unit platinum, it's essentially the standard cooler, I don't like 'blowers'. I've currently got a Sapphire Tri-X based cooler which is excellent.
blaser
4 Aug 16#28
You can often get upto 10% fps improvement on a third party factory overclocked cooler, but it's the noise and longevity that I'm mostly interested in. These coolers are usually loud, rather pay £10-20 more just for that.
LazybeatX
4 Aug 16#29
It's all personal preference though, I'd have no problem with overclocking this to the same as the nitro card and having it run louder as I game with a headset on anyway. Yes you could probably OC the nitro a little bit more too but the silicone has it's limits and they would probably be almost neck and neck in the end with this card being louder. That and the 3 year warranty would outlive the length of time I would have the card for anyway.

this card is excellent value for money if you want to game at 1080p 4gb is enough for 1080p and this card is not much slower than its big brother the rx480

Gamers Nexus did a tear down and it's slightly worse than the stock one as they don't have the copper heat plate it's just all aluminium. It does have the backplate which will help a tiny tiny amount with VRM cooling.
The problem is because it performs nearly as fast as a RX 480 4gb it is priced nearly as much. Once you strip away retailer margin, shipping, packing, and manufacturing it's not costing $50 less it's probably nearer $16.
A price change will come only because of two things 1) Competition (something that is faster in the same retail space) 2) Oversupply (where AMD have more of these chip than they can sell). They will then supply then a few $ cheaper.

it's 21% slower than a 480 stop saying "nearly as powerful"
LazybeatX to Muffinss
5 Aug 16#34
Well according to gamers Nexus who always do very in depth reviews the difference between the 470 4gb and the 480 4gb is 10% on average.
I Don't think it really matters to the target audience anyway. AMD says it achieves 60fps at 1080p very high/ultra settings and reviews seem to conclude that.

It depends which 480 you are comparing it against: 4 or 8 Gigabyte, reference or custom board. Without stating which it's confusing.

Just did a price comparison can get:
- RX480 Sapphire nitro+ £199
- RX470 sapphire nitro+ 4GB £174
- RX470 sapphire nitro+ 8GB £204
Shall I just go for the RX 470 Nitro 8GB? to maybe future proof for £30 more compared to the RX 470 4GB.

I really wouldn't bother with the nitro 470 4gb, at that stage you mite as well just get a 480 4gb Refrence card for £10 more. If I where you I would either get this card posted and save a fair bit of money or I would just get the 480 Refrence card. If you absolutely must get a 480 nitro then the only one I would get is the 4gb for £199 + postage. This is assuming you are on a tight budget. The problem is you could just say well if I spend another £40 I could get the 8gb 480 nitro oc. Then you could say well for £50 more I could get the 1060 strix then for £60 more than that you could get a 1070. The point is you have to set a budget and stick to it otherwise I'd just buy a 1070 and have done with it.

I wouldn't say significantly but it will probably bottleneck a bit. Make sure you overclock the CPU and the bottleneck should be minimal.
