That's not pricey, genuine ink jets cost way more.

I have the 240DN (£36.59 in a recent deal) and it's a decent printer. The prints are not vibrant (it's a colour laser...) but perfectly acceptable.
Be warned it is very large and heavy, if you need something compact then check the dimensions!

Purchased as I have had a few inkjets over the past few years and as I only print occasionally, the start up alone of inkjets takes an age.
Bought this now. Are these easy to refill?
I've gathered that we need to use replace the chip each time we refill cartridge.
I understand that the colours are all in one cartridge. Does each colour have its own chip? Do I need to make holes in the cartridge?
Is there a step by step guide on refilling these?
I have noted the refills come with instructions but can't see them online now anywhere.

Hot from me. Absolutely crazy price !!!!
The price of the fuser unit alone is more than the price of this printer.
A must buy for anyone in the market for a colour laser printer.
Perfect colour prints that wont smudge at the first drip of water.

Well not really. You won't get photographs that look as nice as those from an inkjet printer. Laser printers are better for colour graphics.

Agreed, the fuser was crazy expensive, as a company we wouldnt sell them till the cheaper fuser units came out ( 160 quid VS 400!) and the lower fuser roller likes to shed its clear sleeve, Ricoh still refuses to admit there is a prob with this, will be fine if you power up for use, do job then shut down, seems to be the ones that spend alot of time on standby warmup all day that blow the fuser roller.
Not to alarm anyone, I have been working on these for years, this will be outstanding as a home printer! Hey, I have one myself

this seems to be the same as the 240, these are essentially the same machine since the 220, they do change the chips up sometimes, i know the 240 chips dont work in my 220, even tho they look the same.

Can someone explain the... Chips and how to get them for £15
drewsup to TirolForce165
14 Aug 16#52
Just look on ebay, they are usually on the side of cartridge held on by 2 plastic lugs, cut one off, slide out and replace, a spot of bluetack or hotglue will hold it till its in machine where it gets held in place by wall of inside machine
Might want to tell eBuyer as it is stating the price after cashback on the linked sale page.

Both are the same. Ricoh calls it C250DN, retailers like to add a 'W' to signify the wireless part.

Anyone found a good colour laser mfp as an alternative? The Mrs demands the ability to photocopy...
pibpob to PR1
12 Aug 161#25
A gotcha with most all-in-one printers is that even if the printer is duplex, the automatic document feeder is not, so to copy from double-sided originals you need to use the glass and turn them over manually.

Depends what you mean by good. A good price or good quality. No doubt you want both
Around £150 seems to be the going rate, but all seem to have expensive toners/refills. There is a Lexmark CX310DN from buyer at £115, but toners are even more expensive at around £40 each.

13 Aug 16#45
Gave heat but be aware than cheap (in cost) printers almost always have reduced print capacity starting toner/ink kits, The inkjet equivalents you might as well just throw them away when you need to refill.
The standard toner kits appear to be around £80 this yeilds a page count of 2k for black and 1.6k for the various colour toners.
I'm tempted to replace my HP4350DTN workhorse but my worries are the cost of the toners after the coupla hundred page initial toner kits run out.
But the £200 for a full replacement toner set worries me.

What about the drum replacement?
topss to misterjohn

I think the 'drum' is integrated with the toner: 4-drums tandem method printing tech.

13 Aug 161#38
You can run these cheaply if you dont mind getting a little dirty, i have the older 220 from ricoh and am an engineer, the chips are under 15 for a set, just because its says its empty, doesnt mean it is, they use coverage/print total to calculate end of life, usually loads left after it says its out, just rechip and press onwards.
The drum which makes the image is usually good for X2 orX3 the life of cartridge, unfortunately, when the unit runs low on toner, they want you buy a new one, when all it really needs is a chip and sometimes a toner top off. Ricoh uses all in one cartridges to reduce footprint of machine, you can buy other laser colour printers that just take a little toner box, but they are usually larger machines due to the technology involved, same with adding duplexing, hey, this stuff takes extra room to fit inside!

Looks like a good deal upfront, but the end of the first review on amazon from somebody who was given the printer for free states:
".... The replacement cost for the the four toner cartridges is £185.42 at cartridge save .co.uk . At a cost of £101 for the printer, it means it might be cheaper to replace the printer than replace the toner. This could be a limiting factor in purchasing this printer but the print quality is amazingly good"

I fix laser printers please be careful manufacturers are way clever than what people realise. Usually the cartridges will be starters without chips so you will to pay for chips plus a toner refil. Laser printers do not work like an inkjet, toner contains many different compounds and the particle sizes are completely different. If its a drum and toner in one the unit will probably be made so it cant be refilled so you'll need atleast 1 genuine set. Good luck ><.

And your printouts don't smudge. And it's faster. And it costs less to run. But it won't print photos well.

yeah good value/a good deal, not necessarily lowest price but non-extortionate consumables and decent print quality etc, ideally (coincidentally...) £150 or less as that's the max I had in my head. Duplex would be nice but not an absolute deal breaker.

Of course genuine ink jet ink costs more, but that's an apples to oranges comparison. If you use ink refills (a fair comparison), the cost is miniscule. However, we're talking about a laser printer, not inkjet here.
£12.89 per colour on a refill basis IS pricey. For example, full colour sets for a Dell C1760NW can be had for less than £14, so nearly 75% cheaper.

Also it's on a par with liquid ink refills which will give you nowhere near the number of prints. So cost per printed page will be significantly lower.

£12.82 per colour (x4) on eBay for just the refills, so quite pricey I'd say.
