I posted this earlier but it was expired because the price was wrong! It's a refurbished Dell Latitude e6230 with decent specs and a 128GB SSD.
12.5" screen, 3rd gen i5 and 8gb ram.
Nice deal for what it is and 1yr warranty included.
Their online chat won't give me an expiry for the offer but I don't think it'll last long at that price anyway.
Upgrade to Wireless AC and Bluetooth 4/LE with the Intel AC7260 (half-height version). Can be found for a little over £12.

I have this very machine (I'm typing on it right now) - bought it new from Dell Outlet (cancelled order, not a fixup) in Australia and it's been used to death over the past 2.5 years. Keyboard is excellent, one of the best laptop keyboards out there; it's also able to be opened and upgraded, ram can be upped to 16gig and the HDD is easily replaced. You can install internal cards (I replaced the provided wifi with a BT/Wifi combo card though Intel made a mess of that one). As for performance, etc. - I've been able to run a high as Fallout New Vegas on an external 24" screen, works pretty well actually. Mine only has the internal Intel HD4000 graphics but it seem to work with a fair few titles from about 4-5 years ago. It's not the thinnest or lightest ultrabook, it's a corporate machine and it's built for that type of environment; it's fairly robust (has a special frame design) and I've carried it just about everywhere without significant problems. Took to windows 10 happily, everything is pretty stock standard.

Would you really notice the difference on a 12.5" screen?
Have the model down for this for work. Take off all the corporate stuff we have on there and it's a good performer

I always wonder whether people who say that have bad eyesight, or they have never seen a good screen. I can easily tell the difference between QHD and FHD. And believe me, once you have used those resolutions, you do not want to go back to HD ready.

@CDP £260? Its shows up as £190.80 with the 128GB SSD included.
Yeah confirmed. There was a comment from Microsoft on HUKD somewhere saying the loophole will be soon closed. They'll start manually verifying everyone who tries to upgrade through the accessibility feature.

"Remember that you can still upgrade to windows 10 for free if you wish. Heat"
Windows 10 is a privacy nightmare akin to a virus , why would anyone want to upgrade? Also I don't know how MS gets away releasing products that are full of bugs , then rely on their customers to find for them were it does not work , then release lots and lots of security/ updates.

works fine for me. Can't blame Microsoft if it doesn't support some 3 rd party software. You should check that prior to upgrading and no one forced you to do the upgrade.

School work: Assume he'll use Microsoft Office or similar. This doesn't need much, so fine here.
Play games: This will play AAA games that are a few years old reasonable. More recent games may need graphics settings turned way down. Smaller, simpler games without the heavy graphics, web games, indie games, etc will be fine.
Browse, download, stream: Definitely, this doesn't need much either by way of resources.
More than enough speed, RAM and storage for your needs, with the exception of downloading - you might want more storage (an external hard drive might do it on a budget) depending on what you're downloading.
I switch between an 8" tablet (1920x1200 px), my partner's older Macbook Pro 13" (1280x800 px), a Retina Macbook Pro 13" (2560x1600 px), and 24" monitors (1920x1200 px). I don't see it makes a massive difference at this size at all. I'm absolutely fine using the 1280x800 screen on the Macbook Pro for general use and watching TV. While it would be nice to have 1080p on this one, I don't think it's a must have at all, especially for the money, and given that the charge will likely last longer for the lower res.
On the CeX comments, I guess they're hit and miss. I've had plenty of items arrive in poor or broken condition from them.

Seems good. There are deals posted here quite often from newandusedlaptops4u. This is a little more money but it says Grade A, whereas with newandusedlaptops4u they are Grade B (and from reading here, it seems a gamble as to what state of machine you will get).

Ethernet is 10/100/1000 - Intel 82579LM Gigabit Ethernet located on the rear edge of the machine.
The rear cover can be removed rather easily, you can replace the keyboard (there is a backlit version available as well). You have two internal slots which both have ariel connections, I believe this was originally intended for separate wifi and BT cards. I also believe it can take a 3G/4G card internally but I think you need some extra options for that to work (I have seen some elements on ebay).
Battery is external and user-removable, you can get a small one that sits flush with the case, a larger one that juts out the back (I prefer this as it makes it easier to pick up) and a very large slice one that goes awkwardly underneath, I had one originally but it was faulty so I returned it; it's supposed to give a very extended amount of battery life but I found it makes the whole thing too thick and awkward to use happily. There are a range of 3rd party batteries for it on the market, the Dell ones are the most expensive but have the most milliamp-hours; there are lesser ones (5200mah) that come in at around 17-20 pounds. It has a combo USB2/ESata port which I think requires the machine to be in AHCI mode to be workable.
As a corporate machine it also has a docking-station / port replicator device available (you can get them from ebay too). I'm running mine with headphones running to speaker input, HDMI to external screen (I use an HDMI > DVI-D cable connected to a Dell 2405 24" screen).

Rip off. CeX have 'A' grade ThinkPad T440s for less and 'A' grade X240s with SSDs for around £70 more. Typing on a T450 I got from them which looks and feels brand new for £275 (Broadwell i5, 8GB RAM (will be 12 once I get more), 128GB (aftermarket they installed, 550MB/s))

These are kinda chunky still and use 2.5" hdd/ssd if I recall correctly. You can get the newer e7240 or e7250 from webuy.com for under £300 if you look around. They are amazing ultrabook. Majority of them have lower screen resolution unfortunately 1366x768 which is still kinda bad for a 12.5 inch as most are now used to 1080p screens. Otherwise I love these laptops

Streaming? Hell no. If you want to game I would recommend a Tower as they are cheaper, far more powerful and upgradable. However, if your son needs to take it to class, that's another story. A gaming desktop is usually 400-500 depending on what settings and a laptop capable of the same would cost 800-1000.

I agree on the CeX comment, can be good but can be terrible too. Screen res is a shame but it's kind of normal at this price point. It is not suitable for any AAA games from years ago (e.g. GTA4, Doom 3, Crysis) which would be examples of this, fine for more basic games like Minecraft or World of Warcraft (with settings turned down).
As to the price of this machine, it's actually quite a lot for an E6230, it's still good value in its own right but you can find these under £150 regularly and I have picked up an E7240 for £175 before, so unless you're desperate I wouldn't bit right now.

I said they come up from time-to-time. Apart from rising to your baity/jealous comment, do you want me to take a photo of the E7240 I got for £185 with a 4th gen Core i5, 128GB SSD (they only come with SSDs), 8GB RAM and 2-year warranty? I'm not sure how else I could physically prove that to you. It came from CeX if you must know and we had another from Cash Converters a couple of months later (with 6 months warranty).
The E6230 and E6320 I can't remember but it was one of the big ex-lease companies and are still in service today. Though before the flamers step in, they probably didn't have a year's warranty but are almost cost-effective enough for it not to matter - other than a mainboard failure, I can't see what we couldn't fix for a minimal amount ourselves vs. the cost of returning it to base.
Is that a Dell warranty rather than a CeX or other 3rd party warranty then?
plewis00
8 Aug 16#45
No, it's a CeX warranty - in the same way the deal here is a third-party/Gigarefurb RTB warranty. Dell warranties are only meaningful if you are the original owner or have the original owner details, which no self-respecting refurb company is going to hand out due to Data Protection even if it within days still. I assume we are comparing like-for-like...
plewis00
8 Aug 16#46
Found this, hope it helps someone - it's in stock now, it has an SSD (I'd imagine it's at least 120GB), it is the bigger E6330 (arguably still a very good and portable machine and for some reason a lot rarer than the the E6230/E6430), 4GB of RAM (you can add another 4GB for about £10) and will have 6-month warranty. CPU is 3rd gen Ivy Bridge. You also get an optical drive or a bay that you can repurpose for housing another hard disk or battery.
I guess if any of you missed out on the E6230, this will be a great alternative and hopefully show that a bit of looking around can get you a real bargain. I would also bet if you ring them, there is a deal to be done (£140 including post doesn't seem unrealistic) and then you can confirm the SSD size too.

Do CeX actually refurbish the units? I don't fancy a battery that's already had 4 years of use.
Also not sure on the grading - is B safe to buy, or not worth the risk?
plewis00
8 Aug 16#48
No they don't, if I'm honest and you noted the same, but then most refurbishers just 'wipe the hard disk and use a wet wipe on the laptop'. So I always end up physically cleaning it myself. Grade B is fine, and if it's rubbish, return it to the store - my unit was a little grubby (so I wiped it off) and had a pin-sized dent on the lid with minor other signs of use but nothing horrific.
This E6230 will be no different on the battery, they will wear out but I am yet to buy a machine from anywhere with a totally inoperable battery and if I had to, one day, buy a new battery I wouldn't be that upset.

I found an E7250, i5-5300u , 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, B Grade on CeX/WeBuy for £240. Looks like a I can return it with a premium/insured service and they refund the cost. Ordered as I need two laptops, and if it's no good I'll return it.
Will report back when both arrive.
plewis00
8 Aug 16#50
Montana78 posted that earlier (post 30). But hopefully this proves my point that I wasn't talking out of my **** earlier, there are great/better deals available if you look. Yes, it's more money but you have a 256GB SSD and a 5th gen i5 CPU, I think you'd be hard pressed to argue it's not worth it.
Add 120GB SSD for £25, more RAM for £10. With all this you have to trust CeX will supply a decent one but returning it isn't a big deal.
One tip - do not use the returns service for laptops - take it to your local CeX if you have to return it. The returns service is insured to £50-100 max.

I received the CeX unit first. Great condition, other than a small scratch on one corner which was probably enough to make it Grade B, as Grade A is supposed to be 'as new'. Otherwise great condition, battery status is 'Excellent'. Didn't need a second laptop in the end, so cancelled the E6230 order.

Arrived today from Gigarefurb. It isn't what I would class as Grade A, there are a number of faint scratches on the lid and some far more noticeable ones around the edges/ports. However, that is purely cosmetic. The laptop seems pretty good, very fast and twice as good as the HP 250 G4 I bought recently on a Tesco deal (which is going back). And because Im using this for travelling it's far better sized (much smaller).
