I've spent thousands on audio equipment in the past, and ive settled on a second hand £80 hifi from the 90s. To me is sounds better than anything ive ever used. It was hard to admit to myself when sitting it side by side with huge expensive b&w speakers, what made it worse is i know these cheap speakers are damaged too lol.
There is no such thing as a ' person know what they are talking about' Hearing Its like any other of our senses. We all like different things, and all perceive sound differently. Also for me, the room has the biggest effect on sound quality, i personally like a wooden floor. Next comes the source, then speakers, amps pretty much all sounds the same.
My point is, listen before buying, dont let anyone tell you what sounds best, and dont believe everything in hifi magazines, full of pseudoscience crap.

Wow... I am super noob in this...
So just to be clear. That Phat Dac sits on a Pi where it gets it's input and music. Then the Phat connects to an AMP (like the LECY) and my normal speakers with wires connect to that AMP.
Was the last comment from Rusty Spoon justify why it's better with the Phat on an AMP?
Thanks...

I think Fishmaster is talking about me with the comments.
I have owned/built lots of HiFi, DAC's etc and I have to put my hand up and say the pHAT Dac is incredible regardless of the price, I did an A/B test against my Arcam IRDAC and the difference is VERY little, I would say this is 95% as good if not more. I have the pHAT Dac on a Pi Zero in my bedroom on my Onkyo setup and it's mindblowingly good.
Tested with a Naim XS2 Amplifier, B&W CM Series speakers, FLAC, Streaming and MP3 files.

The Phat DAC converts I2S data from the Pi to 2v Analogue Line Level, it will need an amplifier connected to the Phat DAC and then your speakers connect to the amplifier.
It's irrelevant it has nothing to do with the DAC, your speakers connect in to your amp, so you connect the speaker wires to your stereo amp which you'll need if you don't have one

If I have just the speaker wires, do I get one of those banana connection tor to connect into this phono input? Thanks..
The £1.50 Phono upgrade is just phono connectors so you can easily connect to an amp without using the 3.5mm jack on the Phat DAC.

Fishmaster, could you explain this a bit more; "with £1.50 phono upgrade", thanks.

I've got a Chord Qute HD DAC bought it on a whim from someone on eBay for £460, I compared it to a Buffalo II DAC couldn't tell the difference.

A few months ago - I would have agreed that one dac's the same as another, until I heard my music through the chord mojo - bought one next day, and haven't looked back.

Blind test is the only way. A friend of mine just got a Raspberry Pi Zero £4 and a Phat DAC for £12 with £1.50 phono upgrade, so just over £20 and he can't tell the difference between his £500 Arcam DAC and the £12 Phat DAC.
I've got a Grundig Stereo amp and 100W Grundig power amp, made in 1980 and it sounds fantastic through the Heybrook speakers I have and I was given all this stuff for free. I bought a Denon RCD-M40 to replace the Grundig and it sounds no different to me, probably less bass output actually, it's just more convenient to have optical inputs and phono connectors, rather than DIN.

The Lepy ones from Amazon are good value. The speakers are powered by the amplifie and the Chromecast will plug in to the Aux via its audio lead. LEPY

You are definitely missing something. You would need a pair of 20 speakers if you want stereo sound.:stuck_out_tongue:

Those stands are ugly as sin!!!! Much prefer a set of Pixel T80's for a fraction of the RRP!

Can I hijack this thread to ask how do you convert a normal speaker cable to a 3.5mm connection. I've got an old set of bookshelf speaker and would like to connect it to a chromecast. Thanks in advance.

You would need a stereo amplifier to power the speakers properly. You could then plug the 3.5mm chromecast into the amplifier.

Cold, two years old model, can't be as good as 2016 model...no, wait, this isn't a phone...
Are those metal stands? That would be a no, no for me. Heavy mass just kills the sound though it may mislead your perception with tighter bass...

You lot sound like you know what you are talking about! I am looking at this package atm:
I want the Denon receiver, but am struggling with the 5.1 speaker package. Is there Q Acoustics Concept 20 5.1 package where i could take advantage of this offer?

I have some slightly old Monitor bronze speakers and they are fantastic. Had 2.0, then 3.0, then someone gave me some nice Kef floorstanders and a Sony sub, but the Monitor stand mounts still sound great as rear speakers. So nothing wrong with that package.
