Complete and utter BS. Even if thats the case then why would they fire the senior staff as well who would be planning and recruiting for their next project?

16 Sep 16#86
Every time a game is finished they release people. At the start of a project you have a small group of developers and as it picks up more steam they increase the work force. You can't employ 150 people on a game and having half of them twiddling their thumbs while they have nothing to do. It's like having script writers working on a new film and you're annoyed they've let go all the camera men go from the previous project.

Oh look breaking news. Sony lays off most of its employees in SCE London including senior staff which so happened was suppose to be their main VR studio. The VR bubble has burst before it even releases. Brilliant news.
Surely though with this some clever people could get it working on PC? Even Sony say they might allow it to work on PC in future.

Sony will abandon it as soon as it releases like they did with the Vita. Even now its one month from releases and theres literelly no buzz over vr. Vr is already dead and they are now gonna try to cash in on the few people who have more money than sense before they pretend it doesn't exist. Sony has a long history of abandoning anything that isn't their main ps console.

Would love to know how frame interpolation for a low latency real-time video source is going to work.
It's fine for video decoding (you just decode extra frames and interpolate towards them), it's also fine for TV projection (again, you just introduce latency with an interpolation buffer).
However frame interpolation on a real-time video source where you can't buffer?
In that situations, all you have access to is past frames; using them for interpolating(extrapolating) a future frame seems like a recipe for rubber-banding-like artefacts.
When your competitors are advertising 90fps, pretending that 60fps+frame extrapolation=120fps is seriously disingenuous.

I have tried the PSVR a couple times in the Sony store in the Dubai Mall. The PSVR was running on a stock PS4, and the two titles I tried out looked pretty fine to me. I tried the London Heist and the underwater experience. No vision blur or motion sickness. The fact Sony have barely promoted this yet does not fill me with confidence. I think they'll start promoting it more once the release date for the Neo is announced as the vanilla PS4 experience is going to be lacking.

What nice stuff is appearing? So far I've been extremely underwhelmed by the games, the release games were pretty average (except Tiltbrush). I'll probably be buying Call of the Starseed tonight, but other than that the rest of the games look horribly overpriced/poor value for money.

16 Aug 16#44
Very dependent on the rig running the Oculus. But you are right, there is plenty junk out there for Oculus & Vive. But at the same time, there is also some very good stuff. If you have a high end card and add some supersampling, it can make quite a difference. But you'll struggle to much supersampling on anything lower than a 980ti, and ideally you want to be running a 1080+ to really get the benefit from it.
But at the same time, it doesn't need to be "lifelike" GFX. The sense of immersion is so much higher (like, orders of magnitude higher) than anything on a flat screen (and anyone comparing it to 3D games doesn't have a clue) that you can get away with more simplistic GFX.
Something like Agent Omega is a good example. It's certainly not the greatest of games, and in 2D, the GFX would be laughable. But it demonstrates the freedom VR gives you pretty well. Even my OH, who really hates heights and flying, enjoyed blasting around in that.
sancheez
16 Aug 16#43
I know what you mean and I agree (also Vive owner). There is some nice stuff appearing for it now, but it does still feel early days. And it needs GFX grunt. I've already splurged on a 980ti and will have no qualms about switching up to the 1080ti as and when it appears. Given what I've spent on PC VR, I'll have no issue with adding a PS4.5 + VR to the collection. As long as it warrants it.
The console crowd will be expecting Sony to launch with a perfect version of Fallout or Uncharted or something so I'm intrigued to see what Sony can come up with.
I just hope they don't throw them in with it running badly on a standard PS4 using stick movement (hello motion sickness) for distance locomotion.
The better Sony can do it, the more it benefits all of us early adopters.
Blaat_blaat
16 Aug 16#42
its 60 fps min preferably higher and than sony is using some special software to upscalle the framrate to even higher playstation vr has potential to run at 120 fps max, that is higher that the occulus or the vive. Yes your right about graphics being sacrificed but the games i have played on occulus and have been a few looked like crap as well when it came to graphics have not seen any that looked amazing yet. I can understand what developers feel like when they says that the processing power is the bottlenek for games for the playstation as people expect games to look amazing these days and these developers normally make games that look amazing so for them its a step back to make games that don't look amazing but run smooth at 60 fps min as there use to delivering games for the ps4 that run 30 fps :P
Fo3
16 Aug 161#41
The future of the VR industry depends on how well Sony pulls off VR. Personally, I think they should market it only for NEO owners, as the low res or fps people will get on PS4 may put people off. Hopefully Sony have a few tricks up their sleeves to keep FPS and apparant resolution and graphics high, e.g. using cell shading instead of texture maps, and using other stylised art designs to make things look pretty without requiring a hulking GPU to produce. Even my Vive doesn't feel like it's quite there yet, so Sony has a big task on their hands.
"The complaint stems from the fact Sony has specified that all VR games have to run at 60fps minimum to avoid any issues with lag and motion sickness, which is a tricky task for the current PS4. The new console's extra processing grunt will ensure that the experience is smooth without developers having to compromise too much on graphical detail." (See my previous post. Resolution will go as you CANNOT sacrifice FPS. Even moreso if you're starting form a lower 60fps baseline ...)
60fps is not enough.
For VR to be convincing you need good resolution, high FPS, and as big a FOV as possible. Oculus and Vive run @ 90fps. If the current PS4 is struggling to manage 60fps, you're gonna want the Neo.
Sure, it'll work(ish) on the current model but personally, I wouldn't touch it without the Neo.
I honestly hope Sony do a good job with this. The ready-made PS4 market is MUCH easier to tap into than the current PC one. So it has the potential to give the entire VR sector a big boost. So I honestly hope the current PS4 manages to do at least an OK enough job of it that people will use it.

All over priced at the moment...especially with new consoles on the way. My advice, wait till there's some proven software, and wait till they figure out walking. Least don't buy it blindly...wait till its out and test it first.
Unless of course you're hoping to get it anywhere close to release day and planning to stick it on ebay?...then, go for it.

It says in the Tesco blurb "Order now for delivery on day of launch" so I am really tempted ...
... but not sure that I can make enough space available to use it -
nothing is known about the neo, 7th of september there will be info released about it.
That is the thing i am not sure if the original playstation 4 will struggles with it, and i have not heard any reviewer say this only one person has said it might be awefull and than again he didn't specify if it was with the extra processor or not at the time. Furthermore i believe games specific designed for playstation VR might even run smoother than the ones for PC VR as PC VR games once again need to be designed to run over a specific range of different cards and processors were and the pc is not dedicated to just that game there is always stuff running in the background, the playstation VR games only need to make sure they run smooth over 1 type in total so they tend to spend more time focusing on making that perfect. You could argue that games don't always run smooth of ps4 however i find this 99% of the time happens with games that are designed to run over multiple type of concolse and the pc, looking at games that are exclusive to ps4 i haven't found one that didn't run smooth though that is my personal experience.
I think playstation VR is going to suprise us all and probly the one VR that is going to drive the VR market atm as this is the one the public can actually afford. Its not the most inovative/amazing VR experience compared to the PC VR but it will probly be the one driving the VR market.
jimx26
16 Aug 16#36
Source? Everything I have read has been positive and the PS4 doesn't have any issues running VR.
sancheez
16 Aug 161#35
If the original PS4 struggles with this (and it will, good VR needs BIG GFX grunt) then you are either going to have to sacrifice resolution or framerate/latency. And it will be resolution that suffers as you can't really get away with low framerate/high latency as this ruins the effect and causes motion sickness.
If the PS VR turns out to have enough exclusive content over the PC version, and does it well enough, I may get it alongside the Vive. But if I do, it will be with a PS4.5. I'm using a 980ti with the Vive and would still like more GFX power.
How much is the 4.5 looking like clocking in at? And when?

VR is interesting, when you try it you start to understand why it has so much potential for gaming and films. However, if people were not willing to wear a pair of cheap plastic glasses for 3D how much traction this will get is debatable. This is a very good entry point if it's your thing, when you look at a PC setup is over £1000 and then some However like others I am willing to wait for awhile. More interested in 4k PS4 that is capable and this is as a possible later add on.

That's why the normal console is for. Not everyone wants to just sit down with a normal controller and TV to enjoy themselves.
You can't really compare the price of either when judging how better it will be due to the time difference. PS4 has nearly been out for 3 years and was the same price as VR at launch which explains the price difference now, VR will probably be a similar price after that long.

Yes they do but why would that matter in this case, as there price guarantee only reflects prices of amazon.co.uk self. Thus if there price never chances which it hasn't since you could pre-order it the price i will pay wont change now if they decided to price match at some point before despatching i would pay a lower price. However in this case they wont price match as your not really paying 329.00 pounds for it your paying 349.00 pound and using a voucher for 20 pounds off. Amazon will only see the 349.00 pound and doesn't count the voucher, so no luck there on getting price matched.

Decades ahead of his time. These people are the real genuises, they're essentially using a potato for a computer and are able to come up with ideas realising technology that never existed before. The ultimate potato hack.
I can see another Wii type of situation but without the huge sales. People will likely be impressed by the innovation but will quickly tire of the primitive graphics and the inevitable shovelware, it'll be gathering dust in a cupboard in 18 months time.
How the f*** are they going to get the resolution and fps needed?!
The throughput needed for 2160 x 1200 @ 90fps, 110 FOV is an order of magnitude beyond what the ps4 is capable of in modern games.
Or are we going to be seeing a return to ps3 graphics quality?
I was on the fence about this myself, but the 11 year old asked for one for Christmas so I get to play it risk free
Which mentions:
Unless of course you're hoping to get it anywhere close to release day and planning to stick it on ebay?...then, go for it.
... but not sure that I can make enough space available to use it -

And when?
Looking forward to the PS4 Neo though.
You can't really compare the price of either when judging how better it will be due to the time difference. PS4 has nearly been out for 3 years and was the same price as VR at launch which explains the price difference now, VR will probably be a similar price after that long.
Movie on here as in a cinema headset

Nice price wont be using it got mine of amazon.co.uk for £330.87 got student discount of the normal 350 price tage so its only 1.87 pounds more expensive but wont have to pay upfront.
So I heard 50% of launch stock was allocated to preorders, so people could actually get one in the wild on launch day...I guess they ate expecting a second delivery a week later...
Always got them the day they come out.
