in that case just get some 2 pence pieces and stick white paper one side and use permanent black marker pen on the other
Then if you have an old chess board lying about use that, if not download and print an 8x8 board
download the rules and off you go

Why??
Is this site not about saving a bit of cash?
I would never buy a board game brand new.

Great game. You can make it a bit fairer when playing with children by giving them one or more corner pieces to get started as that can even it out a bit.

We have a rule 'your move is it complete when you let go of the piece you put down' - this way you can easily visualise what your opponent might do next, and/or change your move, and possibly set them up for a fall.
It gets good towards the end when moves become a 'damage limitation' exercise.

Go and look for it in charity shops. Shouldn't cost you more than a fiver there.

Anybody know how long it takes to learn to play this?

A minute to learn….a lifetime to master!
It's very simple to learn - looks more complicated than it is. But it's quite random - one person can look like they're winning easily then they suddenly lose.
Very good quality game at a great price.

My 4 year old can play it, Its a very easy game for all to play. You can either use your brain and think ahead with tactical moves or just play and see how it pans out.
You cant beat the board game but why not see if you can find it on an app to dabble with.
