No sure why some people are referring to a brand with no history. Onkyo has been around since 40's. It's not a brand you would find in mainstream consumer electronics shops but smaller shops aimed to Hi/fi enthusiasts who are prepared to spend extra money for outstanding sound. In the A/V reciver market they are one of the top brands and been doing it for a long time. If you like warm and natural sound, than Onkyo is for you.
Personally I've found Sony to be a bit hit and miss, but my trusty STR-DB930 receiver still keeps on giving even after what must be close to 20 years of life, mine has been with me since graduating, getting married and having kids, none of which has seen it miss a beat in all that time.

My onkyo amp just quit on me cos the hdmi board has some dodgy bga solder like the xbox 360 problem. I don't know whether to label all their gear suspect because of that. It was a known issue from a range of amps from that period. And has rendered a perfectly good amp useless. My previous Marantz amp quit on me for some digital issue too (that one was so old it had no hdmi). This time I got a cheap denon in the superfi sale. At least now I have 4k support I guess.
MrWani to benjam1n
9 Aug 161#30
I had a very similar issue. Onkyo are aware of the fault on the hdmi board and are repairing free regardless of warranty on the effected models. It was some time ago but I vaguely remember it stating up to 2018. It took some searching but well worth the effort. Service was great and mines been working fine since. Think they had faulty DTS chips from memory.
I'm pretty sure I posted the repair link in a couple of previous Onkyo deals, probably 12 months ago though.
Uridium to benjam1n
9 Aug 16#34
If you don't mind a bit of soldering then it's pretty easy to replace the Duff CAP's on the HDMI boards (plenty of youtube videos showing which to replace).
...personally I'm useless at soldering but I gave the HDMI board out of my dead Onkyo 606 to a friend who is decent at soldering and it only took him half an hour to fix. Since sold the AVR on to a mate and it's still going strong with the repaired HDMI board.

What age was that ONKYO set? I have one from about 2014(ish) and it's been unusual since I got it. Sometimes where it refuses to acknowledge it's been powered on, doesn't output any video or sound and then suddenly fixes itself after being repowered. Does it so little I took no notice of it, but now you've got me worried.

Or does the Wifi let you have wireless speakers dotted around your home? Sorry if this is stupid to ask.

I think you can connect to the amp's own web site via wifi - although there are also apps that connect via wifi and give a better user experience.
You can also use Deezer, Spotify etc from the amp itself - though again, you get a better UI from an App .
I believe there are also options for Internet Radio stations (which can be preset into the amps memory).
Apparently there's some in-house joke about Onkyo...no me neither...

Some things like signal paths or cables are best kept physically far from each other. They act as as antennas, causing interference, having them further from each other - for example separate audio channels reduces the interference.
So yes, you could make them smaller but at a cost.

Normally fish are caught with a tiny hook, the picture shows an anchor because it's a bloody big fish to be caught and is used in an exaggerated sense. Everyone knows you don't catch fish with an anchor, it was an exaggeration to make a point and/or for comedic value. I contacted Onkyo about it and they straight-away admitted there was a production issue. I since bought a 545 on a similar offer to this posted a while ago, and it's a very good A-V amp IMHO.
