Vendor states "95% that you need to pay customs taxes" which will add 20% VAT plus an additional 2.5% Customs Duty plus whatever DHL charge for admin (£10?), say total £41.28 to pay https://www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/tax-and-duty

I have redmi 3 pro and having issues with it. I did put in power saving mode from the settings. It asked me to restart the device which I did. Then it just got stuck on MI logo. Many attempts to hardreset all failed. It eventually came back on with black screen the only thing working on it is the camera, fingerprint sensor and google weather/internet. I cannot access the settings.

I know wrong place to post but is there any otherway to get into phone settings?

Thanks

That's not an official Xiaomi Rom, it's a dodgy one put on by the seller and it's not safe to use, all of them are buggy, don't get updates and some have major security issues and built in backdoors. Follow a guide to remove the vendor rom and go to the official global rom. The bootloader does not need to be unlocked to do this.

jnm21 to aqs123
24 Aug 16 #25
I would look for the blackberry chargers - up to 2.1A with the yellow plug - used to be reasonable on Amazon/eBay (about £3-5 refurb & new) - some come with international adapters. They are sound as a pound (can generally charge tablets too). Anker ones too, but their CS is what gets the reputation (they sell rebranded decent but not perfet china tech IMHO, just back it with great CS).

EDIT: If you go for an Anker usb port charger, make sure you have good cables - they can make a huge difference - I use RavPower, TronSmart & Anker (check Amazon for technical reviews that mention charge rate in Amps, then double check prices on eBay ).

I just bought the redmi 3 pro (5" screen). What is the appeal for 5.5" screen you can't use easily with one hand? Do you guys all have a specific usage requirement that justifies the big screen? Am I missing out on something or maybe you are all ogres. LOL

Easier to browse internet, better video experience, bigger equals better.
As phones have become phablets they have resulted in a drop in tablet usage so effectively you're getting 2 devices in one.
That's my experiences anyway.

I don't understand the rom on this phone, the latest official miui 8 for this model I can find is running on lollipop, yet it's listed as running official global marshmallow. Gosh these Xiaomi phones are cheap however be aware of the pitfalls. I have a RedMi Note 2 and it has its issues. Limited updates (even worse than this phone as it has the Helio X10 CPU which has no ROM support) and the front camera filled with dust (from the speaker) due to a design flaw. If you are happy to live with no support and installing custom ROMs extra its a lot of phone for your money but if you just want something that works look elsewhere. I'm not sure I'd bother again as I just don't have the time to hunt down ROMs and disassembly my phone to fix the camera (and i'd call myself very very technically proficient). In summary - great value but more work!

Edit: It also has compass, wifi and battery issues. All workable with but a pain.

OK thanks for that, I didn't realise there was a different rom for this "special" model. It makes me wonder if the cyanogen rom would work? The advert says this phone is longer than the non "special" version so the hardware is obviously different.

Recieved my device. Factory sealed box. Official global rom. Updated to developer rom without issue. Included was an adapter from the seller, I wasn't fond and often for a pound shop alternative that was fused. 4G working fine on EE, haven't tested in great detail mind just some VoLTE calls and speed tests. Applied for bootloader unlock permission and received it the next day (which is apparently quite rare). Now stuck with unlocking due to info mismatch on their server end so awaiting a response from them on fixing that so I can continue (possibly my fault for changing the rom during the application process). Aside from that, happy with the purchase thus far.

For those interested in ROM bloat. Next to nothing. The only things I considered bloat myself were swiftkey keyboard that I don't use and Facebook. Both of which were gone in seconds easily.

All google play services are included. IR blaster has worked perfectly on 3 televisions I've tested. Sitting at around 1.9GB of ram free most of the time when not heavily multitasking.

Volume/power buttons appear to be metallic, feel rather nice. Fingerprint scanner is fast. No rattle from buttons or hardware within the phone. No camera bump.

Honestly it seems a cracking device for the price, I'll be perfectly happy to use it as a daily driver once my bootloader unlock problem is corrected.

Negatives are a lack of UK locale on the ROMs. UK language is avaialble, just not locale, may cause a minor issue with some apps thinking you reside in a different country but can be modified at a later date. Also, the camera is not amazing, but it can take a decent picture. Anyway for the price point, phone is one of the best available.

As a thicko can you please explain why you needed to update to developer rom and unlock the bootloader.

Will I need to do this when mine arrives ?

Were you hit with customs/vat etc ?

I added the case and screen protector with my order as it only added a couple of pounds - but this phone seems a few mm longer than the normal version of this phone so will they fit ?

Did you change the Rom to a Xiaomi updated rom, or did you unlock to install a custom rom?

I am interested to see if the CM13 rom used for the Note 3 pro will work on this 3i device?

Also can you confirm if its definetly got band 20 (800) for 02 4g?
jonnybravoeldorado
3 Sep 16 1 #63
The updated to developer rom and bootloader unlock are not necessary for standard use. The global rom as standard is perfectly usable and the bootloader can be unlocked using that rom. The bootloader will require unlocking if you plan to root your device or use custom roms or recoveries. There are solutions online to do this without xiaomi's permission, but ideally they should be a last resort. Phone can be used on the stock rom without bootloader unlock for typical users.

You won't need to do this if you have no interest in custom roms, rooting and so on. Phone can be used standard out of the box just fine.

I had fees to pay due to opting for DHL as I needed the device quickly. The seller did however report a low price on the invoice to reduce fees and such, which I expect they will do for other shipping methods also which should prevent any fees for folks who order using standard mail.

The tracking for those interested, reports my package was recieved by DHL at 1pm, by 11:30pm the package was in Germany. By midnight the package left Germany and arrived in the UK 2 hours later at 2am. It was in my posession by lunch 12pm that same day. Of course there was a wait for the package to reach DHL but overall it was perhaps a 7 day delivery, including the time taken to process payment by credit card.

Case wise I'm unsure Dave, I've order a case separately myself to test. I expect most cases will fit albeit snug. Hard metallic cases likely won'y. Soft gel cases, rubber, should work for us.

Hi thanks for the quick review. I ordered one as well, can't wait for it to get here!

Are you running Miui 8 or custom rom like Cyanogenmod 13?
jonnybravoeldorado
3 Sep 16 1 #65
MIUI 8 currently, bootloader process is haulting due to information mismatch, seems a common error on the forums, have contact them about it to hopefully resolve the issue. Once that's fixed I'll play around a litte.

Regarding screen protectors, I purchased a cheap tempered glass one from ebay to tide me over. The fit on mine isn't perfect, with perhaps a 1mm gap at the top and 2mm at the bottom, however it did cover the entirety of the screen space, leaving only the black bezel areas uncovered around the edge a little, and had speaker and camera cutouts. I'll invest in another in a few months time likely, but this will suffice for right now. Assuming they ship a standard note 3 protector to you, I expect you'll have a similar fit.

And in response to band 20 and such, I don't know of a way to suitably check the bands supported by the phone honestly. If anyone can provide one I'll be sure to check for you folks. But as the phone is advertised as supporting it, and the rom for the special edition flashed without issue, I'd expect all is well.

For my life on Android till now, I have had technically powerful spec phones of their time - Orange San Francisco, Huawei G300, Moto G (1st gen 3G & 4G), but have always struggled with poor cameras on them and now feel not much point of super speedy phone in pocket when missed out on some moments to enjoy!

I want to break that cycle now! Any recommendations for phones under £150 budget that take decent photos? Not expecting DSLR level quality for sure.

Camera samples for this phone courtesy of techtablets, a great website for reviews on budget Chinese phones, tablets and other technologies.

Check eBay item 291788422871 - £7 with best offer available. Reading reviews I would double check the cable length with the seller (should be 6 feet/1.8m - that was always one of the best parts). Unless you regularly charge multiple devices this is the way to go. Also if you need one for home & one for work, you may get a better price on two. One word of warning, be very careful removing the plug (it can take UK/EUR/USA/Aus plugs) - you can lose skin & damage the contacts - I did the first time I tried!

chrisjordan666
4 Sep 16 1 #77
When it arrives you will NOT need to flash it. Jonnybravoeldorado flashed on the latest beta ROM but you will not need to do this as it has the global ROM already installed and supports over the air updates (OTA). Only extra apps installed are facebook and swiftkey which can be easily removed, has the 800mhz band which o2 and giffgaff use for 4g. I would recommend a proper fused plug for when it arrives.

jonnybravoeldorado
4 Sep 16 1 #78
You can use it straight out the box, it doesn't come set up, you have to run through the set-up yourself. There are no odd chinese apps to remove, and the things that did come, swiftkey and facebook app, that I noticed after set-up, were uninstallable and gone in seconds . So no, you don'e need to do much at all, sim card in, set up, play store and such is all there for you, good to go!

My own advice, for language select ENG UK and for locale, select United States. I've played with locale on the MIUI roms and it seems the locale you select controls what apps are installed after set-up. Choosing US leads to no strange chinese apps and such .
Sandy1012
4 Sep 16 #79
Thanks for your reply.
So no chinese apps to get rid of on this global version, should work out of the box like normal UK phones, pop my sim in and ready to go?
Was it sealed shen delivered, or do they open box to check and/or install
jonnybravoeldorado
4 Sep 16 #80
No chinese if you go for US locale. Outside of the MIUI apps, but they're all english and do provide benefits of backing up data, messages, finding your device and such if you choose to use the service.

Will indeed work out the box.

Entirely sealed when delivered, a small adapter was packaged outside the box wrapped in foam material, but as i stated earlier, this adapter isn't ideal and you'd be better off visiting a local pound shop to buy a fused adapter. It will work however, I just don't feel comfortable using it myself.

so far the redmi note 3 pro special edition as in this post is the only xiaomi device to support band 20 LTE ie the only one to work on 02's 4G and other networks use band 20 for additional supporting 4G bandwidth in built up areas.

I went for this over the normal version as band 20 will become more important in the coming years when voice over LTE kicks in over all the networks. band 20 relates to the 800mhz frequency which will provide 4G over much much greater distances than the higher current frequencies but has a lesser bandwidth meaning the more people on it, the slower it will be and more so than the higher frequencies. it will however allow for a better 4G signal out in the sticks and it will allow for less switching of transmitters when your traveling in a car or bus and since it supports voice calls, it will hold the call longer before trying to switch the mast your connected to.

at present most networks in the UK use high frequency 4G bands then for calls the network kicks you back to 3G or 2G. 2G will be turned off in the UK by 2020 and in Europe by 2017. this will mean 3G is the only fall back and most networks are trying to faze that out quickly to switch entirely to 4G and up the power on the 4G frequencies but to do this it will be reliant on band 20 which will be used for calls and the higher frequencies retained for data.

so all in I think having band 20 is actually very important going forward

Yes and no. Officially? No. Unoficially? Yes. I took the unofficial route while I wait for the Xiaomi system to fix itself, and in a week or two I'll lock the bootloader and officially unlock the device.

Extra info for those interested. I currently have a 64gb Samsung Evo microsd in the phone, which works fine. To use microsd cards it seems they need to be in FAT32 format.

I had to flash the CN developer ROM via EDL when I was trying to unlock mine. Oddly the official guide says you can use the stable or dev global - and rarely it does play ball, didn't with mine. As soon as I was on the China ROM it just unlocked with one click :/. It's worthwhile trying a few troubleshoots if it doesn't - locating the device using the MIUI website and checking your login on the phone and Mi Unlock tool match up. You can also manually select the Fastboot driver from Device Manager to see if that fixes it. It's a horrendous process sometimes. All the tutorials are on the MIUI forums.

It's worthwhile getting the phone unlocked. I started out on the Xiaomi.EU rom since it was much lighter then ditched MIUI entirely. CM is so much nicer to use and whilst it's not perfect at the moment I prefer it massively to MIUI. Unless you're unlucky enough to have a newer variant FP reader the only real issues are things like Bluetooth battery drain, lack of VoLTE and CM's usual awful exFAT drivers. You can also use Xposed and root stuff without MIUI throwing a fit. The Resurrection Remix ROM has been completely stable.for me.

It is a much better deal by paying £40 tax to IR, as this may end up as a bit towards a hospital bed, if a million people buy this then it is £40 million. But if you bought from Amazon or Apple channeled via Ireland, Luxembourg, patents in Switzerland..., that's a fat £000000000000 tax .

Does anybody know if the one year replacement warranty that's bundled is worth keeping or not?

As my brother is looking for a new phone around £150 and I've heard good things about this phone but the lack of warranty has me holding off recommending it to him.
Kenneth131
13 Sep 16 #128
dont think the warranty even works for the UK tbh it would have to be sent to china but that only costs about £10 for registered with royal mail and takes about 10 days so not bad.

honestly though they open the boxes and quality check them before they are sent, if it's fine one testing it's unlikely to have an issue. not that it can't but it would be unlikely and for the cash there ain't much to rival it unless you step up a tier in pricing.

We (myself and my small business) pay well over £200,000+ each year in tax and VAT - I think we do our bit for the UK economy.
(Iam by no means 'wealthy' but there is always food and fresh water on the table and a roof over my head - warmth in the Winter months).
My father was a Consultant Anaesthetist and before his passing in 1976 aged 41 years gave his life to reseach and his specialiality was critically ill children - he was based at Alder Hey Childrens Hospital, Liverpool - my mother 83 years now and well, also worked at Alder Hey, Liverpool.

The question was about personal imports. Do you sell Xiami phones or even Samsung or IPhones, just to stay to the subject matter. Of course we pay a trillion pounds of taxes but some get on the headline with complex multi country arrangement. If they are doing multi country tax optimisation, I pointed out that one would pay tax straight into the treasury which got to be a benefit for UK tax payer services.
deany76
13 Sep 16 #131
I never buy anything over £15.00 from overseas so I'm not really relevant - I was just curious about how much EXTRA (in VAT/duty/Post Office admin fees) the phone would cost - OP should factor this in - in fact I see no mention in OP's post re: duty etc.

I had worked in government, the net total cost of a staff including all infrastructure and benefits inclusive of managers and managers' managers headcount is a round number of £100,000 per year. So working say 37 hours a week is unproductive to enforce too many little value parcels. It would be an insult to taxpayers to recoup and enforce £40,000, which is 1000+ Xiami phones , or 20 a week, while it costs taxpayers £100,000 per employee. Of course one could outsource the jobs , so cheaper wages by stripping out pension blah blah, but these low pay workers then need working tax credits, housing benefits, jobs taken up by EU immigrants because we don't have enough workers. But nevertheless , as I said before, good when they pay tax for personal imports.

Irrelevant to the deal of a Xiaomi phone, since you gone off on a tangent, how do you explain your wealthy business paying so much tax, implies it has turnover of millions of pounds per year, that you have time to post 1300 comments (in two years) since July 2015, plus posted 60 deals to save pennies? Currently using Magisk V6, systemless root (phh SuperUser) and systemless xposed (required some modding). All working fine and dandy, tested using the latest Pokemon GO that uses safety net and blocks standard root methods. Will update the post if I try any other systemless mods.

Ok so I ordered this, mainly out of curiosity and due to the fact I would really like a dual sim phone, I currently have 2 phones (work and personal) and I would sometimes like to not cart them both around - the phones I have are an iPhone 7 and an s7 edge, I am trying to come away from contract phones and can sell my s7 edge for roughly the buyout of my contract, the iPhone 7 I have just bought SIM free - now I know the Xiaomi is not a direct competitor to an s7 edge, but I use my s7 as a "work" phone (In truth I just pick up whichever isn't on charge to do tasks that don't involve needing a specific mobile number), I have read the reviews and two things that are important would be battery life and dual sim - the Xiaomi ticks both boxes here, but the camera isn't that good, now as I will be keeping my iPhone I already have 1 phone with a decent camera so I am willing to compromise - are there any other areas that the Xiaomi would let me down for calling, texting, internet, social media etc... The only thing that is also important to me is I use three in touch which is like o2's TuGo but on the three network - I don't use NFC or Google pay as far as I am aware, any help appreciated

Now your phone will come with miui7 probably with rom 7.3.9.0 MHRMIDE it will ota to 7.5.2.0 MHRMIDE which is the current rom but still miui7 however you can update to the development rom 6.9.8 miui8 ask jonnybravoeldorado post 60 in this thread how he went about it . Im sure it will soon be ota'd to miui8 but how long that will be dont know the development roms get ota regularly as well

Flashed CM13 official nightly for kenzo last night, along with supersu in systemless mode, systemless xposed 86.2 and the modem file from the most recent MIUI dev build fastboot rom. Everything is working great, fingerprint scanner, wifi, 4g, camera, not found an issue rom side. Xposed and root work perfectly, no safetynet detection either. This could be where I settle for a while now. Also have a QC 3.0 charger on the way as CM apparently supports QC 2.0, could be a benefit to running it over MIUI.

My G4 had the bootloop problem. Was unable to get a warranty fix so sold it for spares. So now have this redmi note 3. Camera shots taken inside aren't as good as g4. Outside are ok. Phone seems lighter than g4. Battery is better. Screen not quite as good but you get used to it and i don't notice now. Launcher is completely different but I like it after having a few problems at first. It will be a step down from the g4 but I'm pleased with my phone as not shelling out 100s for flag ship phones anymore. Oh.. No lag like with the g4.

Its interesting you say that, I have used MIUI in the past with my Galaxy S1 and S2 (MIUI is the OS which is installed on Xiaomi) and I loved it. The software is not available on G4 otherwise I would have installed it on there.

My G4 is great but im not getting on so well with the buttons on the back, I have had no boot loop issues at all.

If the Redmi Note 3 is a step down from G4 then I may need to reconsider, from the specs it looks better but I guess other factors such as Camera and Screen Quality do make a difference.

Hi - it replaced my LG G3 - and its better in almost every way............the almost is the camera - more specifically the video.

Daytime shots are fine - it seems to struggle with darker scenarios - although this could well be me not having a clue how to change the settings etc - I'm still learning.

I haven't flashed it with a rom or anything - just use it as it came out of the box.

Battery is awesome - I get 2 full days and then some from medium usage.

Highly recommended phone.

I am the same as you, previously had the LG G3 and changed to this. The only part that isn't a good as the LG is the camera but I paid allot more for the LG G3 so it's understandable.
No regrets so far.

For me I carry a small compact with a zoom and a better camera for days out. Don't miss my G4 camera at all. I always take a photo with the phone though so that the cloud backup assumes GPS for all photos uploaded via the time stamps. One day though we will get a zoom on phones I guess. Also I only ever dropped my phone while taking pictures. The balloon flight photos taken with phone was to much of a worry though so just done one and tucked it away. Lol

Received one of mine today...left by the postman on the doorstep, in full sight - and with no indication that the parcel was even there. Lucky it wasn't stolen!

The phone seems really nice - and I actually quite like the MIUI interface. However, how do I update it to MIUI 8? It's on 7.5 at the moment...and there don't seem to be any updates available

miui 8 stable rom has not been rolled out yet for this model but should be soon what others have done is to install the official miui 8 developer rom 6.9.29 here's link to it http://en.miui.com/download-301.html#449 not sure how you do it you could look at post 60 on this thread and ask him about it he has done it but like i said should'nt be too long before ota to it comes along

Aah, I'll just wait for the OTA. One thing that is disappointing about MiUI is that it messes up the notification window. On normal Android, things like BBC iPlayer Radio have big notification panes with pictures of the current DJ and other information. In MiUI, that has been replaced with a pretty naff rectangular box with just basic pause/forward buttons. I don't know why they decided to mess so much with the notification window - it isn't an improvement over standard Android. MIUI 8 looks to be an improvement on this though.

Received mine today, updated to MIUi8 developer ROM and the phone seems nice - haven't set it all up properly yet as apps seem to be taking an age to download from the play store, that is my only slight quibble initially - the camera doesn't seem as bad as I expected given the comments about it

One problem....how do I set the phone location to one that allows Amazon Video to download?! The list is full of developing nation countries....but not one country from Western Europe, N.America or Australia/NZ. Such a strange omission by Xiaomi...and a potentially difficult one to overcome.

My phone locale I changed after setup from India to Falklands. No idea if that's the answer you wanted as not tried amazon myself.
wenttoabetterplace

I'm already down as the Falklands - but clearly the Play Store recognises the Falklands as being something other than British territory...otherwise the app would download. (It should be available in the UK, France, Germany and the US)

6 Oct 16 #225
I actually just tried to download the app with a standard Marshmallow version of Android with UK as the locale....and, it doesn't download on that either ! Amazon are clearly just trying to install features in their apps that Google don't allow.

But the Underground trick worked . Now that the app is installed, I've turned unknown sources off again - but will turn it on whenever the app gets updated.

Amazon really need to do better though. How can they possibly compete with Netflix if their app doesn't even download onto the world's biggest mobile OS?!!

Speaking of annoying software forks - I'm not really liking MIUI too much. The notification pane isn't nearly as good as normal Android - and the settings menu is v.different too. I hope MIUI 8 is a marked improvement.

Yep, I can deal with the settings (though it's annoying that the security tab has been hidden away). The notification panel is just ugly compared to normal Android. I miss having my big media panels like on iPlayer Radio. It was much more elegant.

Still, amazing specs for the price - and a top notch phone. Here's to MIUI 8 being better than 7 in regards to notifications.
danielson1978
6 Oct 16 1 #230
Ok so I've been playing with the phone for 24hrs plus so here is my initial thoughts, bearing in mind my 2 daily drivers are a Galaxy s7 edge and an iPhone 7

Phone looks ok, nothing special but not ugly either, nice premium-ish build
Screen is pretty good
Easy to update to MIUI 8 - no root necessary, just download the developer ROM and update
Lots of settings, which to a geek like me is a positive, you can use the phone straight out of the box but I like the customisation aspect of the ROM
Fast - I genuinely can't notice much difference between my s7 edge and this for everyday use, loading times are a little slower initially
Fingerprint sensor is very good, worked every time so far for me.
I have only found one app that doesn't work (Skybet app) all banking and finance apps work, as does Three in touch which I was a bit concerned about.
Stock apps seem ok, fairly plain but good enough
I am using this with a Garmin fenix 3 HR watch that does smart notifications and after a little tweak of the settings they seem to work flawlessly - the problem was the MIUI was using battery optimizations to stop the app running in the background, this initially happened with Three in touch too.
Battery life, I am 27 hours in with 27% left, bearing in mind this is a new toy and I've been playing with it pretty much non stop (even at work) this is very impressive, I have the screen brightness set to manual but I do have bluetooth running continuously
Camera, the camera isn't great, there is no denying that, it takes an decent enough photo in good light but the video recording and low light photos are fairly average
I haven't tried 2 sims in this yet, but I am sure it will work, I have tried a single sim and a memory card and it works fine
The case I ordered bundled with the phone is rubbish, doesn't fit properly - the screen protecter was tempered glass and absolutely fine

I bought this phone with a view to selling my S7 edge, which is my work phone, for 2 reasons, 1 so I could pay off my device portion of the contract and go to SIM only, and 2 so I had a dual SIM phone so I didn't have to carry 2 phones round with me all the time - my early verdict is I would be happy to use this phone as my daily work phone, it is a nippy little device and does pretty much everything the s7 edge does BUT if it was my only phone and I didn't have the iPhone 7 I would be put off by the camera.

NB - I don't play games or use Android pay so those things aren't important to me

6 Oct 16 #231
For me, this phone would be perfect IF it wasn't running MIUI. I just don't know what they're thinking. It's certainly not a selling point on any level. It just makes simple things (like setting a different lock screen app, or running things like Strata), far more convoluted.

I guess you can't get everything at this price point. But I for one v.much miss the stock android experience.

6 Oct 16 #232

I heard that the stock Android roms suffer from battery drain. Also, I'm only frustrated with it from an aesthetic point of view. I certainly don't fancy getting into flashing new roms and what not . But it would be great if Xiaomi offered a stock Android option. I'm sure their phones would sell like hot cakes if they did that.
ceanth
6 Oct 16 #234
You could simply install Google play launcher. Do a search for a guide because you have to enable it within the security options. You will then get a stock feeling android device.
wenttoabetterplace
7 Oct 16 #235
It only changes the launcher. The notification window is still terrible (no actionable notifications), and the background app support is hobbled.

I'm actually amazed Xiaomi are selling so many of these phones when the OS is so ropey. I never expected to - but I'm actually tempted to sell both of my Redmi's and just get Motorola G4's instead.

These custom UI's are just a joke. A pointless addition to Android that just doesn't need to be done.
wayners
7 Oct 16 #236
Strong opinion! Still that's good as apple users get stuck with just 1 option. I like the launcher myself however I here many like the stock android you get from nexus devises. I do get bored with the same thing so it's nice to change and see what is around. Android is just a program that runs apps. Nothing else and the difference between phone manufactures is the overlaid software, which makes it interesting but you can miss out on features when you change devise. Buy a nexus or iPhone is the only way to keep things the same. Boring though.

I am actually in the exact opposite position of you. I really like the MIUI interface (used it in the past with my Galaxy S1 + S2) however I cannot install it on my LG G4 as its not supported. I am toying with the idea of selling the LG G4 and getting a Redmi Note 3 just so I can use MIUI!
danielson1978

Hi there, My box also says Redmi note 3 (in a not too dissimilar to iPhone font) rather than 3i on it - I am using a three SIM and a Tesco mobile (so o2) SIM and both are working fine.

Haha. Maybe I should give the developer rom a go and see if MIUI 8 scratches my UI itch

I'm currently using my Ulefone Paris in preference to my Redmi purely because of MIUI. I just hate having to delve into weird settings menus in order to get apps like WhatsApp working fully. They should just work...
& that notification pane is still horrible...especially on MIUI 7.

What is it about MIUI that you like?
ceanth
7 Oct 16 #244
People often fear/dislike change!

I guess I really liked the clean and flashy IU of it. Don't get me wrong, I love Android but I really like the visuals of MIUI. Also in my experience the battery life is amazing with MIUI.

MIUI seems more polished with a nice UI. I appreciate that things may take more clicks and there is the security options which need to be enabled for some apps but I feel that MIUI better utilises hardware then stock android does.

Also I guess its the old thing of if you can't have something (in my case no support for MIUI for LG G4) then the mroe you want it :stuck_out_tongue:

It certainly has nice aspects. The SMS and caller apps are v.clean and elegant. & te settings list in MIUI 8 is nice (especially when buying a phone for a family full of iOS users).
I guess I'm just hung up about lack of actionable notifications, and the rubbish support for notification window standards.
I also don't like the status bar (the notification icons in standard Android are nicer looking than the individual coloured icons in MIUI).

I'll have another play with the phone. I guess it must have its merits otherwise people wouldn't go out of their way to install it on non MIUI phones

A couple of things I can't seem to get right are...One of my widgets (beautiful widgets, clock and weather 4x2) the time stops after a while and doesn't update - I am assuming it's something to do with the battery optimisation but I have played around with that to no avail and I can't seem to get Snapchat to work as a duel app (so two separate account on one device) on Miui 8.

Oh and whilst I'm here I notice that if I reboot the phone I get a "widget loading" thing in place of the widget so I have to remove them and reload them again.

Its actually leather look embossed on front with logo.

What's wrong with the gel case? Mine is fine although the screen protection is 2mm short at the top and bottom
marklid
8 Oct 16 #262
Yeah the tempered glass protector is slightly short due to this version of the note being 2mm longer (rumoured to be because of the extra 4G band antenna). The gel case that came with mine is pretty **** to be honest, the holes line up but it doesn't fit very well around the sides, not sure how much of this is linked to the extra 2mm length. Might try and get another gel case to see if it's better.

8 Oct 16 1 #266
Yeah... That's the one. I thought it was OK. I hate the folding flap cases as I seem to drop them. Bumper cases are to bulky for me and get stuck in pockets so I like smooth cases allowing easy removal from pockets. I got the gold phone and the supplied case lets the gold show. I'm a tradesman so I need something easy clean. I like the supplied case. I understand why others would not like it though. Hopefully more options will come available soon though.
danielson1978
10 Oct 16 #267
I don't use my gel case that came with it as it doesn't seem very good and it doesn't really line up properly, it's like you are trying to squeeze a case thats 2mm too small on to your phone...(which of course you are).

I spent the weekend away with this phone as my daily driver and I have t say I was impressed, browsing a phone calls and everything else was fine, I am however going to try and sell it as can't get over the Camera quality, if a camera isn't important to you then this phone can compete with a lot of what is around at the moment, and my next phone is probably going to be a Chinese phone, I recently bought a OnePlus 3 for my other half and I think this might be the route I take, unless someone else can recommend a good Chinese phone with a passable camera

If wenttoabetterplace's suggestion doesn't quite set things right camera-wise & you can make do with a 5.2" phone, couple I'd suggest in the £200-230 range with more than passable cameras:

Huawei P9: Huawei P9 (like new) Titanium Grey 32GB - o2 Refresh - £192.00 (or £212 on O2 PAYG, with £3-4 unlock code from eBay if necessary)

Xiaomi Mi5 - international / global version rom if possible (from many reviews, one of the best cameras in a Chinese-sourced phone)

Ok - I had the same problem with my RING DOORBELL APP.

The fix involved opening whatever app you want to keep running - then go back to home screen - at the bottom press the three lines at the bottom of the phone - the one that takes you to "running" apps - then hold your finger on the app you don't want to close until a padlock appears in top corner - or something along those lines.

Then even when you press the x at the bottom of that screen to close aps etc - the one with the padlock will remain open...............I hope that makes some sort of sense ;-)

Can't get mine to update to either the latest MIUI 8 Global rom or the developer rom mentioned above.
I've tried all the following (using the Updater app and navigating to the file)
- downloading then running from the root of the internal storage with the original filename - receive an error saying it couldn't verify the package (or similar, haven't got the phone with me right now)
- downloading then running from the root of the internal storage with the file renamed to update.zip - receive an error saying it couldn't verify the package
- downloading then running from the downloaded_rom folder in the internal storage with the file renamed to update.zip - receive an error saying it couldn't verify the package
- downloading then running from an SD card with the original filename - receive an error saying it couldn't verify the package (or similar, haven't got the phone with me right now)
- downloading then running from an SD card with the file renamed to update.zip - receive an error saying it couldn't verify the package (or similar)

It's not letting me boot into recovery mode either as I suspect this is currently locked.

Is there a step I'm missing here ? Have searched a few different sites and between them have suggested combinations of the above. I suppose the next stage would be to try and unlock the bootloader and use a fastboot rom but I'm keen to avoid that if possible.... especially if I have to return it as the buttons at the bottom don't light up :disappointed:

- on a PC downloaded the full rom from the Developer rom section in this link
- transferred it via usb to the memory card in the phone

just noticed there is a new version developer rom available 6.10.13 have you had a OTA notification for it yet if not should be soon

14 Oct 16 1 #302
Downloaded and installed.

My only issue with MIUI is the lack of actionable notifications - and the incomplete support for apps on the notification pane. But they are minor grievances given the vastly more elegant contacts/messaging/clock/weather apps - and the overall much prettier UI.

I'm v.v.pleased with the phone now . I wouldn't have been if MIUI 8 looked like MIUI 7. But 8 is a game changer.

I found the following in battery settings;

It disables MIUI's habit of closing background tasks. May be useful if you're giving the phone to someone and don't want to have to teach them how to add battery exceptions for particular apps.

Has anybody moved to Android from Windows Phone? If so, how do you get two way sync on Outlook contacts?!!

I'm amazed that it's 2016, and yet something so basic is still broken. Works fine on iOS though - so I assume it's just Google being its usual belligerent self.
wayners
19 Oct 16 #313
Just install the Outlook app. It will ask about sync so click yes. You can turn on and off in the outlook app settings
wenttoabetterplace
19 Oct 16 #314
Doesn't work. The Outlook app only allows one way sync. You cannot add an outlook contact via a Google phone without going into an internet browser.

The only workaround I've found is using GO Contact Sync Mod which keeps Google and Outlook contacts in sync (every 5 minutes).

Such a cludge. In this regard, I miss the seamless nature of Windows Mobile.

25 Oct 16 #336
Hi there,

I actually sold it this morning (it was my mum's phone). Possibly tempted to sell my own one...but going to look into custom roms and what not to get an AOSP experience with double tap to wake and fast charging. If it doesn't seem feasible, then I'll probably sell my phone too.

I'll drop you a message once I make up my mind (within the next 24 hours or so).
wenttoabetterplace
25 Oct 16 #337
Has anyone installed a custom ROM/firmware on this phone? Radon Kenzo firmware looks interesting....with double tap to wake and Qualcomm fast charging. I'm just unsure as to whether such a firmware is compatible with this special edition phone.

Also, if you did flash a new firmware, how does that affect banking apps and what not? Is flashing a new firmware the same as rooting?

(Desperate to get rid of MIUI - the more I use it, the more I dislike it).

25 Oct 16 #338

I hear using kenzo roms/kernels can be challenging though with the slightly different hardware - good luck.
wayners
25 Oct 16 1 #339
Just out of interest why is it so important to have tap to wake? Never worked very well on my lg g4 as if it went in doze mode the first few taps did nothing. Dun my nut as android 6 doze mode messed the double tap to wake function. Heard discussion on Geek rant podcast which confirmed my experience on many versions of phones and they thought this function could be killed off as don't work to well l. Fast charging is also stupid as kills the non removable battery. Security now podcast covered this and the s7 trouble although the reason why they caught fire is still unknown, fast charging is thought to have damaged battery or circuit resulting in fire hours later. Was interesting. Good fun though playing with roms. Done it myself.

25 Oct 16 #340
I intend on using this whilst cycle touring (in a frame top bag). My Lumia 1020 was great for it as I could just double tap the screen through the plastic and the screen would switch on. Without it, I'd have to open the bag, unlock, do whatever, then close it.

As for fast charging...the Note is the only phone that seems to catch fire. My old Lumia 950 never had an issue...but it was a revelation to get so much power in just a few minutes (particularly useful when cycle touring as the chances to charge things are often time limited). The Note 3 also only has quick charge 2 circuitry AFAIK. Oh, and I won't always quick charge - just when I am short on time.

Basically, I can work around both issues....but I would prefer not to have to . I also really dislike MIUI. It's just so annoying having default app behaviour affected by a UI overlay. & the notification window isn't a patch on normal Android

Not sure I want to go changing roms and what not though

I was running the dev rom and got 1 OTA update but them they stopped. I since reflashed to the latest stable rom.

Dose the wired hands free kit use the headphone jack? I use Samsung headphones and mic no problem and also a bluetooth car stereo for wireless calls that also works fine. Yeah. Strange troubles you have there?
marklid
2 Nov 16 #350
Yes a standard handsfree that uses the headphone jack. It works fine on my Galaxy S5, tried another handsfree kit with the same result. It's odd that the hands free mic works on things like the sound recorder!?
I'm not having too much joy with this phone... problem is, it's about 20 quid to send it back to China :disappointed:
wayners
2 Nov 16 #351
Will it work with something like the Samsung earphones. My mic works fine with Samsung earphones although not the Apple ones I was given? The spacing on the male jack can differs a little and that can cause problems. Had that problem with my old HTC one x. Crap phone that was.
wayners
2 Nov 16 #352
Quick read on net and it looks like your phone is not auto detecting the mic.. Maybe because the mic output is switched off by the hands free unit at the time you plug in, so phone thinks it's a standard set of earphones.. Hitting record wakes mic up. 2 into 1 with a set of buds with a mic might trick phone. Then Just pull the buds out. Pain though. Might be better fix out there?

2 Nov 16 #353
How did you flash to the stable rom?

I've tried installing Mi Suite - but it tells me that I need to update my phone before I can use it. Obviously there are no updates available...

I've also tried to install the ROM via the built in updater. But no joy.
marklid
2 Nov 16 #354
I downloaded the full stable rom from here and saved it to the root of the SD card and renamed it to update.zip
I then selected the zip file in the Updater app on the phone and ran the update.

2 Nov 16 #357
If you're happy with MIUI, then it's all good.
If you're proficient enough to install CM13, then it is brilliant.
If you're like me, and stuck on the older developer ROM, it's annoying.
marklid
2 Nov 16 #358
Tried a couple more hands free kits I had knocking about, they're all the same. I don't get it, the mic is detected by other apps just not the phone.
marklid
2 Nov 16 #359
What error are you getting when trying to install the rom ? I was having issues originally but was trying to use a wrong rom - try the one in the link I posted above.

Either way, a word of advice for all users - install a launcher such as Nova - so much better than the stock one.
wenttoabetterplace
2 Nov 16 #360
Haha...yep, it was the wrong ROM!! All sorted and installed.

I think I'll just stick with MIUI. Second space and dual apps seem like they could be quite handy...and most of the apps are prettier than the AOSP equivalent.

I've also installed Microsoft's Arrow launcher which is vastly better than the stock MIUI launcher.
marklid
7 Nov 16 #361
Still no joy with the hands free :disappointed: No one on the MIUI forum seems able to help either.
I did get some money back for the fact the home/menu/back buttons don't light up so might sell the phone cheap to get most of the money back (as long as someone isn't fussed about the buttons lighting or using a wired hands free).
Shame as I do like the phone... if I sell this one I might pay a bit more and get a replacement with a UK based warranty.
wayners
7 Nov 16 #362
I'm sure this won't help. But... When you plug in a jack you get the option to select different headphone types in the settings. Not available when nothing is inserted. Maybe change to headphones with a mic like the xiaomi buds. It's set to general as standard which has no mic. It in settings. sound and vibration. Scroll to the bottom
