Just to help people with the various NowTV Box versions:
#1 Original small WHITE NowTV Box (a few years back) = max 720p output; extra 'AV' composite video/audio output to use with optional cable (c£10 extra) with pre HDMI TV sets; WiFi Internet connection only
#2 Newer small BLACK NowTV Box (last year) = max 1080p output; wired & WiFi Internet connections; no AV socket; far faster CPU - ie a LOT better than original white box (ie best to retire/replace white ASAP)
[Were some "special editions" eg Christmas last year with various 'jazzy' designs/colours instead of pure black] http://www.nowtv.com/box
#3 This latest black bigger NowTV SMART Box just released with addition of Aerial socket for live Freeview HD digital terrestrial TV display [with some pause & rewind capability, but not record] http://www.nowtv.com/tv-smart-box
“BBC gets alot of the licence it also pays for the infrastructure for freeview etc.” It gets all of it: ‘TV Licensing collected £3.7 billion in revenue in 2013/14.’ And yes, that's BILLIONS. And if you don’t pay they like to put bad, bad people in prison. And remember, that billions is year in, year out!!!
You don’t need a TV licence FULL STOP. As long as you are not watching live TV as it is broadcast.
You can own TV’s galore: You can stream Netflix, Amazon Prime and Youtube. You can watch amazing Bluray/DVD content and you can play fantastic console games.
All legally WITHOUT a TV licence.
TV Licensing are operating an out-dated business model through fear and intimidation.
You can CHOOSE of your own FREE WILL the beautiful services you choose to have in your home. And streaming content is easily accessible and can be contract free.
Do not let BBC TV Licencing or Capita into your home. If they knock one too many times, film them from an upstairs window if need be. They have no more power than the milkman.
And remember, your ‘right’ to silence is YOUR ‘right.’ Not something they give you. Say nothing and shut the door.
SHUT-UP and shut YOUR door. This advice is the deal of the year--£145.50 saved (the only aside, is that if you pay by DD go through the proper termination process).

you still need a phone line (as it streams the channels you watch over your broadband connection)
can you ditch sky? well it really depends on what channels you watch! if you only watch sky1/Atlantic/living and bbc/itv/ch4+5) then yes you could!
Be warned though......you cannot record anything off this box (as said above, you stream off the internet) and sky have removed the kids channels which is another subscription on top of their entertainment package (which is part of this deal) Also if you watch sky sports, you would also need their sports package (which is pretty expensive as well)
the best deals around for the subscription packages (entertainment/sports/kids) are from amazon/argos/Tesco etc and even people of ebay sell them pretty cheap. most often (like this deal) you can also get the streaming box and the subscription thrown in as a package as well.
here is the old box, and includes the packages you can buy for it
YouView boxes are dead slow and have a clunky user interface.
Now TV Boxes (from the black version onwards), are lightning fast.

Easy to do unless you use a VPN... stream over IP and your IP address is logged when you use the player app. If they suspect you dont have a licence they can check if you used it via your IP address... theoretically...

Can someone please tell me how these boxes work? I have a sky connection with broadband and tv and phone line. Does getting this box means I can get rid of my all SKY package? Do I still need a phone line? Where can I see the channels they offer? I tried to go on their website and they have their own internet package and different kinds of boxes which is very confusing.

Most freeview boxes/pvrs have a passthrough so you can loop the aerial back into your TV but looking at the screenshot of the back above it looks as if this only has aerial in. You can get around this by getting a simple aerial splitter for a pound or two and running one lead to the now tv and one to your tv. This will weaken the signal a bit but shouldn't make any noticeable difference unless you are in a really poor reception area...

This is a very good price for a pass deal with the new now tv box. Wasn't expecting to see them so cheap for a while. Considering getting one to upgrade the existing black Now TV box we have but I'm not sure the Freeview facility would get any use since we already have a dedicated Youview PVR, suppose it's an extra tuner for if the Youview is recording two programmes but dunno if it's worth buying just for that.
Still great deal if you need one...

Interesting, first deal I've seen with this posted on here.
Was going to buy one, then leaned towards the YouView 2200 (no record function either). Apparently the NowTV is lacking a proper EPG, and I guess the lack of number buttons on the remote might prove a chore?
EDIT: Gone for it anyway, £5 off via Amex and then sell the pass for £20.

Closest non-NowTV equivalent box to this is the BT Youview Zapper box, which can be bought cheaply second-hand. Youview Zapper gives all free freeview HD channels (which some older TVs may not have, with some SD channels now needing DVB-T2 as well), including pausing but not recording, BBC/ITV/4/5 plus UKTV Play and Quest catch-ups, and access to Netflix. Together with easier to navigate live TV user guide IMHO. This NowTV box gives Freeview HD channels including pausing but not recording, BBC/ITV/4/5 catch-ups, and access to NowTV, plus a few other apps such as Vevo. For simple 1-box solution to upgrade a TV to Freeview HD plus NowTV this is good, for Freeview HD plus Netflix go for the BT Youview Zapper.
Or even better, get a BT Youview DTR-T2110 secondhand for a similar price for full PVR functionality and if you still want NowTV, add the cheaper black NowTV box without freeview to get the best of all worlds.

Apparently the governement wil introduce a law where the BBC licence team can capture the IP of users watching Iplayer streaming, sumbit that IP to your ISP and the ISP will, by law have to submit your full details to the BBC,and the prosecution arrives through post, no visits needed.
Apparently catching illegal streamers will be far easier to do than catching the current BBC tv licence dodgers

Just don't watch BBC then, it's all **** anyway. Save £145.50 a year and spend it on NOW TV passes/Prime/Netflix and still legally watch them (not NOW TV stream, just catch up).

Problem is , it may eventually apply to streaming, full stop , whether you watch Iplayer or ITV player, bit like the current TV licence terms with any live broadcast from any TV station, and not just the BBC

In addition to mickgoodie's reply...
You don't need a phone line if you can get Virgin Media's broadband-only cable package - check your postcode for availability HERE - expensive though as it starts at ~£33 per month on a 12 month contract (yes, that's the cheapest for their broadband only taken this way).
Edit 1: Another company I've found that offers broadband-only is Hyperoptic - their 20Mbps connection works out to around £20 per month on average (£232 ÷12), which is much better than Virgin's price (although the latter's is much faster). You can also check for coverage in your area in the above link.
Only leave Sky if you're out of contract, otherwise high exit fees may apply.
If you get this box & broadband from elsewhere, you don't need to bother about the various boxes or internet packages on the NowTV website. This box alone will work independently of all of them.
Older (black) standard NowTV box & the newer smart box (in this offer) can be compared HERE

It is NOT law and there is no law 'apparently' or otherwise that would allow the BBC to commit a gross invasion of personal privacy on a grand scale. Personal Privacy laws exist and can only be Contravened by security services/police.
The BBC through fear and intimidation will refuse all attempts to Encrypt their service. Because they would then have to enter the free market like SKY and Virgin. And the 3.7 Billion pound gravy train would disappear. No other business model exists in the whole of the UK, that implies that you MUST have a licence and all the bad things that will happen to you if you don’t.
