the new smart box is a roku 4 with limited software/ firmware. I have one and its awesome. Its quad core and has 1.5gb ram and can live pause freeview for 30mins. For £40ish you really cant complain. Also sideload plex and you are away. Better than the New apple TV to be honest. I have both.

This is a great price as I paid double this when they came out.

I swapped my BT Youview box for this and it is great. It seems much more responsive than the previous two boxes and it is nice having all the now TV and freeview services on one box. The picture quality seems better than the Youview box too.

I like how the live sky entertainment channels are listed in a tab next to the freeview channels although the only downside I would say is the freeview guide only really able to show now and next rather than several hours or days in advance but I can easily live with that.

The control might annoy some people as the buttons are a bit limited so going through all the channels can take a while if you are looking for one near the end of the list. You can skip several channels at a time though with the fast forward button which saves a bit of time. I am sure they will update it at some point with more functionality for the guide though and maybe a favorite channel tab. :smiley:

the new sky tv smart box has enough power to output at 4k but is limited in the firmware. Sky don't want you having this instead of there high priced Q box. Be aware that the smart box has a fan so isnt completely silent like the previous generations. It's hardly noticeable though. If you do have issues with noise take it back as some of the first batch of roku 4's had fan issues and this is basically a stripped down version of the same hardware.

It provides a Freeview HD tuner to TVs which are HD 'ready' and only have a Freeview tuner. Older plasmas and LCDs can take advantage of it

I know it's not something that matters to most people but could anyone tell me what lights are lit up when the box is on standby? I want one of these for my bedroom but hate anything that lights up when not in use.

£35 in Sainsbury's Heaton too if anyone's struggling for stock in the North East. I've just arranged with Amazon to return the second one I bought at £35.99 as we're getting Sky Q next month, but it looks like sub-£40 is going to be the new standard price for these.

As a Freeview HD tuner these are great (if you can live with the shortcomings of the remote and the inability to manually put it in standby - we've been hitting the NowTV button so at least it's not just heating up with the TV tuner on if it's not being watched.

Only comparable box I could find was the BT YouView zapper but they seem to be more expensive - if you can make use of or sell the passes then for £15 these are an excellent way to get Freeview HD on an older telly

I'm new to Now TV so looking to capitalise on deals like this. Can I buy multiple boxes and activate multiple cards at the same time (E.g 1 x entertainment pass and 1 x movie pass) and can I stack the cards (E.g. If I buy 3 movie passes can I activate then all today and get a years worth of movies). Would likely keep two boxes and sell the rest.

No you can't connect this to a Sky dish, all services are provided by your aerial for the Freeview channels and your internet connection for Now TV and catch up services.

you can have entertainment/kids/movies/sport all active at the same time.

if you have an active pass, you can't add a new one until 1 month before your current pass expires.

I have heard that the codes that come in the boxes have a 1 year expiry, so I never buy more than 12 months in advance, and then just activate them when needed.
