The logical thing would be to pay £70 more to get a superior machine which is the new 3DS. The price difference is only the cost of 2 new games and hardly breaking the bank. The new 3DS has much more to offer with superior everything than 2DS can offer and no one has said it has been discontinued. If it's a money maker why stop it? The machine is not overpriced at £140 as what gadget do you know that can show 3D visuals without glasses at that price? The answer is none.

Even if you were right (and game sales/takings say you're wrong), portability is a BIG part of handheld gaming surely?
I've been playing games for a long time and the thing about the 3DS (and the Vita) is that they offer virtually nothing new and their USP (portable gaming) has moved-onto other devices which, whilst they do something different, I (and most other people) already own them so why do I need the other things!?
3DS and Vita lack killer apps - they have a bunch of slightly weird 'novel' ideas (Tomodachi Life etc.) and some 'here we go again games' (another Fire Emblem, another Pokemon, another Monster Hunter - that's Japan happy then!!)
Their attempts online/eStore stuff is embarrasingly poor - the Badge game which basically BEGS people to spend 90p on some icons for their homescreen (no - really?) - the way it downloads 'suggested' games but doesn't, it just puts icons there which require you goto the store to actually download them (really, really!??) - it's cringeworthy
Sure - install a good game and you'll forget MOST of that and there are a few gems in the store (and they're cheap!) but Nintendo are, at this moment, 100% in "lost the plot-land" - which is a shame, but it's also a fact.
All I'm waiting for them to do is release the mobile version of Animal Crossing now - and then realise they can sell Pokemon games on Android (we play them there anyway) and just give-in and join the 21st century!?
p.s. when I wanted a 2DS I had to do backflips to get one. Almost nowhere stocked/sold them - no danger of a casual purchase, you need to seek one out (toyshops - this is not a good sign!). I then wanted a case expecting loads of options - erm - there's not much which suggests there's not much demand for them? Local game stores have no games either - erm...
