I have this and had previously tried the tp link av500 passthrough. Primary purpose was to try steam in home streaming. Both this and the tp link gave a bandwidth of 1 to 3 MBps. Both tested various configurations on receiving end. Direct 20m ethernet cable connection gives 14 MBps playable stream.

Yeah on researching myself, that's pretty much what I've come up with. Smallnetbuilder.com is fairly useful, but is missing a lot of versions, and you have to infer a bit.

ZyXEL PLA5256 was the only one I could find that seems to be broadcom(the non-passthrough version was reviewed on smallnetbuilder anyway), has passthrough and is available for the most part. The annoying thing is, reviews on Amazon didn't seem particularly promising. Stating a lot of issues with them just dying after a few months of use.

Honestly I'm contemplating just keeping the ones I've got, hoping that some better ones come out later down the line. The disconnections I get aren't massively annoying. Most of the time I'm using the internet enough that they don't happen.

By the way, ZyXel use both broadcomm and Qualcomm chipsets but I believe the 1000 rage is Broadcomm.

Its annoying that there aren't many Broadcomm based plugs, Netgear use to use them but recent ones are all Qualcomm.

There is no easy way as most vendors don't state the brand of the chip they use. The site smallnetbuilder.com displays it, but only on the products they test.

Is there any easy way to tell what chipset they're using. Most of the time they don't say which makes it difficult.

I'll need a passthrough one as I don't have enough power sockets in the house. I suppose the Passthrough ones made by ZyXEL probably also use that Broadcom chip.

Edit: Seems Dlink uses Broadcom from what I can find. I guess that lines up with the other poster who said they fixed the issue by getting a Dlink set.

At the moment I've got some cheaper TP-Link passthrough ones, and they randomly drop connection. I think it's some sort of power saving, it happens when I'm not using the internet that much such as reading a long webpage. The only way I found to prevent it from doing it was to constantly ping the router. Worst part is sometimes to get the connection back I have to mess around turning it off for a while and then turning it back on.

Qualcomm chipsets.. will cause occasional drop outs in some house holds. if you experience drop outs better go with Broadcomm chipset products like

They were the av500 model, so an older unit. But they were so unreliable it's put me off tp-link completely. They were returned in the end

Might be, I think they were cheaper a little while ago, but you are getting 2 gigabit ports in each one, so they will cost more to make as well...

I bought the TPLink 500mbps version, the ethernet port on them is only 100mbs, so what's the point in the other 400mbs if I can never get 500mbs?

these were £20 in sainsburys the other week, was posted on here. my local had loads on shelf, i bought two pairs but returned one as only needed one pair. maybe try check your local before buying from Amazon.

MIMO only applies to WiFi.....

Just be aware that these have the new technology MIMO so will travel further distances when comparing with others which will probably be on the older technology

FWIW I've just got a set of the dlink av2 1000s which were a bit cheaper but no pass through. Only had the a week but seem rock solid so far. Unlike the tp link ones they replaced which were truly awful
