Not sure if use to many but definitely for me as a eBay seller as it saves money on the smaller parcel but saving money if it weighs more :smiley:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At myHermes, we’re always striving to improve the value of our service. Having reviewed our offer, we’ve decided to change our weights and dimensions to compete with all of our competitors, including Royal Mail and we are introducing a new range of weight bands for smaller and medium sized parcels.
This is great news, as revising our parcel weight bands now makes it easier for you to compare prices, with the introduction of two new weight bands: “0-2kg Small” and “0-2kg Medium”.
This means that if you are sending a parcel that weighs 2kg or under:
If the size does not exceed 45cm (L) x 35cm (H)x 16cm (W) you will be able to take advantage of our small parcel category.
If the size exceeds the small parcel, you can opt for the medium parcel category, with maximum dimensions of 61cm (L) x 46cm (H) x 46cm (H).
Our upper weight and dimension limits will not change allowing you to send parcels weighing over 2kg up to 15kg and a maximum length of 120cm, with combined dimensions of 245cm. See our parcel size page here.
Update
The myHermes prices have been updated and will show the cost of a small or medium parcel from 00:00 on Wednesday 17th August. The prices of a “0-2kg Small” parcel will cost from £2.75 (inc VAT) and the price of a “0-2kg Medium” parcel will cost from £3.95 (inc VAT).
This is a PRICE INCREASE!
0-1kg was always £2.75 (Google: hermes prices)
Medium sized parcels 0-1kg now cost £1.20 each MORE!
THIS IS A MASSIVE INCREASE!
The only reduction is 1-2kg small sized parcel that most people won't benefit from, as small sized parcels are mostly under 1kg.
Amazing how this price is increase is so well disguised, people are voting hot!
Introducing sizing for parcels is a real bother as you now need to pull out the tape measure every time you book a parcel.
Hermes didn't even claim it is a price reduction. They say it is "great news" because it is now easier for you to "compare prices".
Throw away? That's what they do to the packages they are entrusted to deliver.
I had 2 parcels 'tossed' last December and loads of hassle to get any reply from their electronic-form-only 'customer services' and therefore compensation. Both items were tracked and listed by Hermes as 'posted through postbox'. Great, except neither package could fit through a postbox!
An 'investigation' lead to 'we don't know what happened to your parcels'. Fat lot of good having tracking then!
I've sent hundreds of parcels through Royal Mail and I've not had one go missing. I only used MyHermes because they had a promotion on and were 10p cheaper than Royal Mail. By comparrison, Hermes 2 lost from 3? Don't let this happen to you.
Haha, I heard somewhere that house is owned by ordinary Joes who are SICK of Breaking Bad fans visiting and throwing pizza up there :stuck_out_tongue: They should charge admission.
Hermes are great, if you're in the city. If you're out in the sticks, the self-employed driver goes AWOL for days - it says "Out For Delivery" but it's a lottery whether it will actually appear that day. Usually they mark it as "addressee not at home" (when they haven't even appeared) and the wait drags on...
Hermes told me that drivers in rural areas wait until they have enough parcels in the locality to make it worth their while, but they shouldn't mess customers around.
For many people, myself included, this is a significant reduction in costs of sending parcels tracked, compared with the Royal Mail, more than half of my Royal Mail parcels are >1kg, yet small enough to send in the small parcel, which in reality is still quite large.
I posted about this on an old thread earlier this evening after I'd received the email from Hermes,it's not good for people who send bulky light parcels though as they will end up paying more as it will be a medium parcel.
It doesn't apply to people who have a business account with them.
Oh my goodness me I cannot believe this picture.... EXACTLY The same thing happened to me... Package was marked on tracking as "Delivered to a Secure Location".... Which turned out to be in my rubbish-filled wheelie bin at the front of the house!!... "Secure Location" - NOT!
I am now engaged in an more-than-2-weeks-long email exchange with their quite-clearly non-UK based "customer services" department who seem unable to respond adequately to even the simplest question, and tie themselves in knots with contradictory answers.
Most recent reply was words to the effect that "We cannot discuss this with you because our contract is with the sender not the recipient" to which I replied firstly by questioning why, then, had the previous 9 agents all replied to me discussing the matter..... Utter and total incompetence.
My point is... myHermes CANNOT be trusted to treat your parcels with respect or care, I would steer WELL CLEAR, I've never had this with other couriers... Just my 2p's worth but I am clearly not alone in having a problem with this lot!
My local MyHermes driver is my absolute favourite courier.
He's polite, always delivers at the same time every day, waits that extra minute for me to get to the door if he can see the car in the drive, leaves the parcels in a safe (actually a safe place, not a stupid place like a bin) place if no one is in etc. He even whistles when approaching the door so the dogs know it's him, and sometimes even gives them treats!
Anyhow, MyHermes gets a lot of bad rep but I think they're one of the better couriers, although it does entirely depend on the person covering your postcode area.
DPD are fantastic as I like the 1 hour time slots and text updates but they cost so much more than MyHermes for smaller packages.
15 Aug 16 #25
Overall, this is going to have many more losers than winners, which makes it a price increase - on average by around 25% for most senders. Not many people are posting mostly over 1kg small parcels. You are likely to be a loser yourself if you change the sizes that you are posting.
Small parcel maximum size is 45cm x 35cm x 16cm, that is pretty tight for an item over 1kg.
therealjohnpeat
15 Aug 16 #39
Actually, that person was correct - couriers owe nothing to the recipient of a delivery and should ONLY deal with the sender (as they paid for and contracted the service)
As a recipient you deal with the sender and the sender deals with the courier - you have absolutely no claim or comeback with the courier, you MUST deal with the sender - end-of.
therealjohnpeat
15 Aug 16 5 #40
I'll be straight-up here - I now use Hermes over the Post Office for all my parcels for the following reasons
1 - their drop-off point is closer and open longer hours
2 - they are cheaper for almost everything except for narrow/light items (the PO's stupid large-letter width reduction has killed their business, basically)
3 - my experience as a sender is quicker and more pleasant
To expand on 3, our local Post Office(s) seem to resent actually accepting post - they make me jump hoops, ask me stupid questions, limit the amount of items I can send, if I pre-print postage they still make me weigh and check contents for EVERY package - meanwhile, Hermes just take my parcels quickly and politely!!
So far I've had no issues with delivery - I'm sure I'll eventually run into problems but for what I pay (less than the PO) I get full tracking so I can deal with problems ahead of time
p.s. If you're the sort of person who's "mostly out", give the sender details of where to leave the parcel - their system has provision for detailed instructions. A note saying that a neighbour will accept it or that you have a safe box in the garden or similar will avoid the courier having to improvise - when you have 200 parcels to deliver and no-one is at-home/there's no alternate delivery location, it gets pretty **** tiresome finding places to leave parcels and coming back is a waste of time and money (and likely another blank!?)
With this email Hermes has basically just killed off my business. I send posters in tubes, the tubes are 64cms long. So with their new weights/rates my parcels have either gone from £2.75 to £5.95 in the over 2kg section (even though they are less than half a kg) or being unable to send them at all as the maximum length for a medium parcel is now going to be 61 cms. Max size is/was 120 cms for £2.75. Either way my customers aren't going to pay the increase and fleabay will get even more of a cut of postage!! ,x?£& you Hermes,!
I appreciate some are lucky enough to have a tidy enough Hermes courier guy / girl. However the women who does my area is a complete imbecile, rude, unhelpful, refuses to use my doorbell, refuses to understand I live alone and work full time, will attempt redelivery even when I've explicitly told her I won't be there the following day or the day after that (to collect her delivery attempt cash obviously) and there is no way for me to go and collect the parcel from the driver on my terms. I dread seeing the MyHermes notification. There is no one to complain to. No one gives a toss how bad the service is from the drivers. Cheap they might be, but there is no level of customer service in my experience.
That happens on a regular basis when I check the tracking it says letterbox and there's no way it would fit,I don't know why the couriers select that option instead of putting safe place for example.
You must be lucky if you haven't had any buyers falsely claim an item hasn't arrived with RM,that's the reason I prefer Hermes as there are less scammers claiming item not received,probably partly due to the fact I never send buyers tracking information so they can't see if it says something like left in porch when they don't have one :confused:
A driver is getting paid 45p (self employed) per parcel to deliver them. Are people honestly expecting them to do things such as going completely off their route to re-deliver something out of normal hours just so the customer is in. Also a recycling bin that is obviously not due for emptying that day seems ideal to leave as a safe place.
Instead of whinging about MyHermes spend that effort making friends with your neighbours, you might even be pleasantly surprised who you share a road with.
I haven't found Hermes too bad. If its a bad courier though, that's where the fun begins. I've sent 116 parcels via them and out of that, 1 got damaged and the other went missing for which I got full refunds. Pro tip - Always take a picture of the parcel you send. It helps should you need to claim. Like any company, there are horror stories but I don't think they are too bad.
JohnOFarrell to edwardocatflappo
16 Aug 16 #101
Cannot stress this point enough, if you are sending an item with Hermes always ALWAYS take pictures of the parcels. I have also sent hundreds of parcels with them and had 2 damaged for which I was quickly refunded. The claims process requires pictures of the packing etc and the damage. I take pictures of every parcel with the label affixed quickly with my phone before I take them to be dropped off just in case. I always pay £1 extra for signed delivery too to ensure nothing is left on the porch or in a wheelie bin etc.
Never had a major problem with them (touch wood!) and will continue to use them!
Nujol
16 Aug 16 #72
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
This encapsulates what I am saying.
If the driver is being paid so little that chucking parcels in bins becomes the default option that tells us there is something fundamentally wrong with the service/operator.
We need a system that rather than becoming a "race to the bottom" in terms of price actually offers a strong end-user experience.
I didn't mention the other issue which was that the parcel was marked as "out for delivery" from 9am to 11pm on a day, causing me to wait in, only at 11pm for it to change to "Delay - wait 24hrs".
I'm on the side of the couriers here.... I repeat, if chucking in bins (in my case that are out for collection) is becoming the norm, there is something wrong with the service, the pay, the expectations on numbers of deliveries etc.
All this self-employed nonsense as an excuse to effectively pay under the national living wage to many of the couriers.... And all to undercut Royal Mail by 5p. It's sad.
Nujol
16 Aug 16 #73
Sorry I should have said a bit more. In my view this is a legal position purposefully designed to make complaints, queries etc. harder to address.
Yes one COULD say that, but when I have anything from Royal Mail my experience is that they always deal with me as the recipient because that makes logical sense. After all I HAVE paid for the service via the sender, and it is MY product being delivered to MY address. Royal Mail deal with the recipient nicely and effectively without directing customers (recipients) to endless discussions with non-UK "customer services" departments.
So I'm sorry for my initial reply because I thought these issues were obvious.
I can't really get stuff delivered to work unfortunately. I've recommended the rear of my shed around the back of my house to my Hermes driver, it's perfect and extremely discreet and no one would look there. Unfortunately she said no, she's not allowed to leave it there, it's not classed as safe. I'd classify it as so safe if it went missing I'd take responsibility - no go.
As for leaving with neighbours, she'll knock one neighbour, who also works.
I've asked if she can drop it in the nearby Hermes parcel shop instead - no.
TBH now I just ask before buying stuff online if they use Hermes, if they do I shop elsewhere. It's too much hassle. No depot is just far too inconvenient if you have my living/working arrangements.
Like I said not much difference.
Hermes tracking does not obtain an signature or proof of delivery unless you pay more. You simply get an idea of where your parcel is, means very little thou if they lose your parcel as in my experience they then only know where it's been.
Personal preference, but to me the post office is closer , I don't need to pay online and print off, and delivery is usually quicker.
I got sick of things going missing, or ebay toe-rags claiming not to have received stuff that I started using Hermes for all but the smallest of things.
No problems at all with them. One con-artist got in touch with me hours after the tracking said he'd received the item to say he hadn't had it. The RM Standard delivery now includes delivery confirmation and no, I'm not talking about signed for. I'd take that over tracked Hermes any day of the week.
It's so cheap as they accept very little liability. Look at the exclusions list. Cheap until something goes missing basically
Just the other day i paid extra for a signature so the courier put it through the letter box and signed the box himself with "Letter box"
Awesome service!
The problem the couriers have is its one of the only businesses that has grown rapidly as people choose internet shopping over the high street. Yes they need to adapt and improve their service but you as a customer also need to help, whats the point of ordering something on next day if you arent gonna be in - a wasted journey for all concerned, always better to have a safe place or a neighbour who is home more frequently. If you want timed deliveries use a more expensive courier - but you wont be happy to pay for it. On a personal note I have lost far more packages via Royal Mail than any courier company but I do use UPS or Interlink.
Catch 22 I think people want to a premium service for cheap/foc carriage - as a business its not viable.
Given what you describe you need to get yourself a delivery box. Frankly in this day and age I think everyone should get one. This is the kind of thing I'm referring to : http://www.hippo-box.co.uk/
In the email I received Medium parcel is 61cm.
If the size exceeds the small parcel, you can opt for the medium parcel category, with maximum dimensions of 61cm (L) x 46cm (H) x 46cm (H).
I'm fed up with Myhermes dumping parcels in in my back garden. I've politely informed them that if they do it agin, I will file a civil case for trespass and criminal damage (no idea if I actually could?)
mbuckhurst
16 Aug 16 1 #106
No it doesn't, you've got absolutely no information to base this claim on, yes there will be winners and losers, that's for sure, but the number of winners versus loses can't be calculated without real statistics. Just as much as I could lose in future, the reality is my business had to take account of the Royal Mail pricing years ago, so has already adjusted the shipments to fit into their sizing, all Hermes have does is match the sizing for the Royal Mail, but saves me £1+ per parcel, that's a significant reduction in postage for me.
I suspect the real losers are those who send one or two parcels via Hermes because they're heavy or large, rather than most businesses.
No, £1.15 for tracked, and frankly in my experience more reliable service than Royal Mail. If you send a lot of Ebay goods, tracked is a serious benefit to stop the thieving gits.
This has completely ruined my eBay business as I send light 0.9 kg but size 73 cm long items. Does anyone know who else I can use. I have checked and they all seem ridiculously priced for large lightweight items. I would have to close down!
I only make £2 per item sold so I can't deduct it out of that!
Does this info help :
Your parcel dimensions
To make sure your parcel is suitable for the myHermes service please check its size against the points below:
Please note: the maximum length we can accept is 120cm, up to 15kg in weight and the combined dimensions cannot exceed 245cm.
max length 120cm
Maximum length
We can carry parcels that weigh up to 15 kilos each and up to 120cm in length, but we cannot accept parcels that weigh more than 15 kilos.
max volume
Maximum volume
If you add the two shortest dimensions and multiply them by two, add the length, the total calculation needs to be under 245cm.
I noticed it says
Please note: These changes will only be available using our “send a parcel” process. If you have an eBay, Amazon, or upload via CSV and you want to benefit from the new rates, you will need to send your parcels using our single “send a parcel” process. If you have a Business Account none of these changes will apply to you.
Does that mean if you go through eBay it doesn't apply ? I didn't know you could go through it this way ? Is that right ?
small parcel size for under 2kg is 45cm (L) x 35cm (H) x 16cm (W) which is still a decent size for small parcel £2.75
yankyg
16 Aug 16 #113
Royal Mail starts free tracking on almost ALL packets in October. Things look very bad for Hermes.
You need to have an item weighing over 1kg, packaged well, and still under 16cm thick, to get this discount. Have a look on any Hermes delivery van and you will see 80-90% are NOT small sized - under 16cm thick.
deb8z
17 Aug 16 #114
When I select small parcel on their website it shows this info :
A small parcel has no one dimension bigger than 45cm Length, 35cm Width, 16cm Height.
When I select Medium parcel the dimensions are still showing the same :confused:
mbuckhurst
17 Aug 16 #116
I look forward to it, if it happens with Royal Mail.
Round my area though, none of the Hermes drivers use vans, and I don't see lots of boxes larger than shoe boxes, the rough dimensions of this change, I also drop my parcels of at a parcel shop because it's easier to walk than wait in, there are usually 100s of parcels and very few large enough to go into the more expensive bracket.
None of us has access to the statistics for parcel size, so none of us can make statements about increasing or decreasing cost on the changes, because simply we have no idea, all I can say, as someone shipping 1000s of parcels a year, it will save me a lot of money, at the moment, and frankly running any business that's all I care about, with margins being tight, a saving of £0.05 is significant, £1.15 even more so.
I will change courier company to reflect any savings I can make, at a rough estimate, this change is going to save me on around 50% of my stock items and 10% of my weekly shipments.
From my experience in terms of reliability, Hermes have never let me down, whereas at least 1% of Royal Mail deliveries go missing, but they're not the worst, I've had a live snake get into parcel sent by UPS and other problems, don't know how it happened, but it did.
Think they mean that their parcels are now classed as medium so they will have to pay more
deb8z
17 Aug 16 #118
Some are saying it will cost 5.95 for tubes but I don't think it will if they are still doing the combined sizes?
deb8z
17 Aug 16 #119
I held onto a couple of parcels until today because if I'd sent them yesterday it would have been 3.95 but today it will only be 2.75 so I will end up saving with this change on the most part.
archermav
17 Aug 16 #120
Yes, that's how I became aware not actually delivered, the recipient got in touch. Most odd, Hermes now reckon it's not actually been delivered as they couldn't find the correct address. So, still waiting.
On their facebook they've now said it was a misprint.
Boatingboy
17 Aug 16 #122
Used Hermes for years and overall their service is not too bad but, for me, this is a massive price increase as I send packets that are 51 x 38 x 5cm so no more £2.75 now all £3.95, £4.30 with courier collection. Royal Mail second class would cost £4.89 so Hermes still cheaper but no consolation to me. All other couriers seem to be more expensive so it looks like I have no choice but to pay the higher cost
deb8z
17 Aug 16 #123
They have confirmed you can send tubes for £3.95
You can still send tubes with myHermes, send a tube with the maximum length of 120cms from just £3.95
toomanychoices to deb8z
22 Aug 16 #136
Didn't they say though that they only take triangular tubes? That definitely used to be in their wording. Still is - Use triangular tubes, not round tube-type cylinders, to pack rolled plans, maps and blueprints.
As for the importing argument, my original email said that for importing I would have to use a manual parcel request instead (or words to that effect) bit annoying if they are now saying that I could import for the same price but I don't suppose it will stay that way for long though. Like their 'classic' site which would be open indefinitely...until it wasn't.
deb8z
17 Aug 16 #124
To confuse matters further they have now stated if you import your items from your Ebay account to your Hermes account you will be able to get the old rates and sizes!!
crofter to deb8z
17 Aug 16 #126
That was always the case and stated on the original email. The only problem I have with that is that you can't import global shipping sales from ebay into Hermes so I will just have to take the £1.20 hit on those items.
crofter
17 Aug 16 #125
As far as I am aware the free tracking is only for Royal Mail business account holders.
deb8z
17 Aug 16 #127
Yes,but a lot of people missed it including myself and/or were unsure if that's what was meant re the prices/sizes were different, it was confirmed on Facebook when it was queried by peeps.
I've got no idea how to import stuff anyway :smile:
crofter
17 Aug 16 1 #128
You simply link your ebay account in My Hermes "importing parcels" tab and it saves typing all the addresses in manually.
As to how long the ebay and CSV imports will be based on the old prices is anyone's guess but I would say it probably won't last that long ...
whatthexxdoidonow
17 Aug 16 #129
Today I imported two parcels via eBay and I was only charged £2.75 apiece so that's all well and good I hope. I'm just waiting for someone to tell me I'm not following their terms and conditions which have incidentally multiplied a thousand fold. (OK slight exaggeration, but you'll see what I mean!). BUT if your eBay item (I don't do Amazon so that may be the same) is outside the 7 day import sold window (say your buyer hasn't responded to a question and as in my case that happens a lot (they don't state what colour they wish to receive so I have to contact them - they might be on holiday) and it takes me a few days to create my art anyway...THEN you fall foul of the price increase as you have to manually fill out the fields via 'send a parcel' and the price increase then kicks in. Thanks to Deb8z for pointing out that their facebook page states it was 61 cms max in error so my 64 cms would cost me £3.95 which is still quite an increase. I have just put my postal price up to reflect this so that you make for an interesting response in non sales!
mbuckhurst
17 Aug 16 1 #130
How many do you get, would it not be possible to edit the GSP parcels into a CSV manually, to then import? Or do some other tweaking?
2 - they are cheaper for almost everything except for narrow/light items (the PO's stupid large-letter width reduction has killed their business, basically)
When did the PO reduce their LL width? I bought a slotted ruler from Staples a few years ago it says 350mm x 250mm x 25mm and the PO web page says the same.
This is a serious question - I don't want to be using something that is incorrectly sized. Thanks.
The Royal Mail and tubes get me. I wanted to send something in a short tube the other day. Nightmare. I ended up putting the tube in a mail bag making it a 'parcel' and saved myself pounds.
