Been looking for a 17" plus laptop for work and came across this one. Compared to alot of the similar spec Laptops out there this seems to fit my budget the best plus I can do the paypal credit too
It really comes down to your budget. If he wants to game easily at 1080p then your looking at around the £1000 price range for laptops which could include a 960/970m.
If your budget is lower then the laptops with the 950m/960m are the only real options.
I use a 850m on my laptop (similar to this) and its fine for most games just intensive games like GTA/ARK etc it will struggle to run.
You could build a half decent gaming rig for less than £500. If he is using at home permanently then you should probably make the decision for him.

I'm looking to get my son a laptop for his Christmas personally I'd get him a desktop so that components can easily be upgraded but he's 10 and doesn't get it
what's the best laptop I can get him he'll be wanting to play minecraft, ark survival evolved, world or warcraft not sure what other he doesn't get to play gta or cod

If he's looking at ARK and GTA (I would put these in the more demanding category) then hes probably going to want at least a 960m. COD, WoW, LOL etc. aren't that demanding.
If he doesn't need a laptop then he would get about twice the performance for money from a PC.

Agreed, you want at least the 960 for gaming. No SSD is another issue. The latest i5 is all very nice, but what is the point if costs are cut elsewhere? For the same money, you can get a Lenovo Y70 with better graphics, an SSD, and a touch screen.

I have a 840m Backed up with a i5 4200m. Its not a bad gpu its not great but it can play games like watchdogs on medium-high setting for around 40fps.
But to call this a gaming laptop... well it needs a GTX 950m minimum to be considered a "gaming" laptop imo.

For those interested in using laptops for virtualisation rather than gaming, both systems (one above and original post) will support 32GB ram.

don't want to be a negative troll, but the specs are weird and very low ball. for the price it's not a good deal. msi are great and I own a high end model
but this is nonsense

These days it means anything with horrible LEDs, a nonsense 1ms claim on the panel, or it being slapped with some cheesy branding ("republic" of gamers).
A forum I visit recently had a post by someone asking if the SATA cables they were about to buy were suitable for 'gaming'. I despair.

Only 15.6" and was looking at 17" but tbh, its a good deal!
Bought this for £525 about a month ago brand new. please don't say bad things about it or show better spec for the same or lower price or I'll be disappointed that I didn't research properly lol

I'm a system admin and support both developers and built a modest VM environment, two hosts with NetApp E2724 running 9 servers and 3 workstations, I'm currently training for VCP Datacenter (exam next week). You would have been greatly better off with the i7 machine. With 4 cores and 8 threads plus it would whip through coding vs the 4 core i5. The cost of RAM is very low, in my opinion you have chosen poorly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ubw5N8iVDHI

TBH Im picking this up for work (coding and Virtual Machines etc.) rathern than gaming and seem like a pretty decent spec for the price.
I was tempted to get this one instead as it was an i7 but I would have to upgrade the RAM adding a little extra cost.

Think you can get a better spec for your money with a HP Envy 17 bar gpu but then 940MX isn't much to write home about

940 - this would surely be slower than no card at all and drain the battery.
Around £75 more but you get '£70 worth' of credit for warframe/world of warships which you should be able to sell on.
Also comes with an i7 and a 950m. The 950m will mean you would be able to play the majority of games on the market at 1080p (although on on high!). As always I recommend adding a SSD, these should one msata SSD.

RAM config looks a bit wonky (8+4), surely that would run in single channel mode or has it changed with DDR4?
