This deal is £20 more than the Palit GTX 1070 deal also posted on this site, but I think this is a nice alternative deal worthy of consideration, it's in stock right now, unlike the Palit card which is "Item currently awaiting an ETA" and it comes with an extra year of warranty (3 vs 2 years).

The 970 and 980 are not out of date by any means. At present there's no compelling reason to upgrade. As I've said before. High end cards is a very niche market. Only around 10% of gamers have them. The vast majority are content to play PC games on rigs that at best produce graphics on a par with the ps4.
Piracy is rampant on PC and this draws many towards it.
Despite nvidias attempts that have failed to convince gamers to enter the big end gpu gaming market. I suspect that price is a significant disincentive for most.
I have the excellent 970 and will go for the 1070 when the time is right. At present my card easily meets my gaming needs and plays games at 4K with most being maxed out. It's not fully overclocked yet. When my 970 starts to struggle it will be time to upgrade.

If that is what you believe fine.

Everyone knows business is there to make a profit, that isn't in dispute.

If really think that their monopolistic ( they really don't have competition) pricing is justified there isn't much I can say to you.

I got my Asus Strix 1070 OC and Acer Predator xb271hu last week (Don't tell the wife how much lol) and its rocking at 2560 x 1440 on BF1 Beta well over 100 FPS on Ultra settings, also get 140 FPS plus on R6 Siege, Overclocks pretty good as well, I've got the Core clock to 2.1Ghz so far. My old Asus Strix 970 OC cannot touch this card.

Nvidia have created a desirable luxury product which discerning consumers can choose to purchase or not.
They put significant financial investment and the associated risk into R&D and are selling their product at a price they feel the market is willing to pay.
All indications show there a plenty of people out there who are indeed willing to pay the prices asked.
Like any business they want to recover their costs, make a profit, reap the rewards and sustain their business model to develop better products in the future.

What a tool. So it's fine for corps to fcuk consumers with prices that are detached from reality? You keep telling yourself that you idiot.
Nate1492

1) 16nm finfet is not cheaper than 28nm. That's not up for debate, it is more expensive.

2) The 1080 is not a replacement for the 980. That's an utter joke.

3) The 1070 and the 1080 both eclipse the 980ti. This is demonstrable. No company would release a better product for cheaper than existing products. Not AMD, not Intel, not Ford. Pick a company you think is awesome. They wouldn't undercut their own stock.

4) You can keep saying the 1070 is the "direct replacement for the 970" all you want. The simple fact is, that it isn't.

If you want 970 performance, you can buy a 1060 3gb.

You can call it bending over backwards if you want, but no one is paying me, this is a legit analysis on their products.

We live in a capitalist society, not communist.

Exactly, Nvidia rely on consumer ignorance and it clearly works, the things they have gotten away with is discraceful. Before people cry, I am not a fan boy, I would gladly buy an Nvidia card, so long as it was decent (they seem to be) and they were priced accordingly (they are not)

Both AMD and Nvidia jumped straight past the 20nm node process, as it was not a significant improvement of 28nm (which they were stuck on for ever) the reason the 1070 performs above the next tier (above 980, but below 980 ti - despite what Nvivia pr tells everyone)

same with 1060 between 970 and 980 (closer to 980 suppose)

Nvidia decided they will charge for this improvement, due to lack of competition. People saying 8GB vs 3.5 GB are forgetting that ram is cheaper (considerably) than when the 970 launched and generational progressions always jump up.

ALMOST everyone seem to be forgetting that due to lack of (real) competition, the cost of 28nm parts were stagnant, so Nvidias margins were actually improving quite a bit, just with selling the old tech. Now they have reduced costs a lot (people are going to say but 16nm is more expensive - it's not) they are raking it in, the latest quarterly results shamelessly show this.

AMD deciding they would try and bluff the low end is slowly getting them a few lower part sales, but at great expense in my opinion.

I can only speculate that the are essentially skipping this high end and going for Volta, or they have something real good they are refining (more likely) but AMD are notorious for failing

Here's to hoping

How some people bend over backwards to defend multi-billion dollar corporations like Nvidia is beyond me.

NO.

The 1070 IS the direct replacement for the 970. That is 2 years old now and we have had a node shrink to 16nm so of course they are not in the same performance bracket. The 970 could be had for £250-270 around release but with the 1070 Nvidia have decided to jack up their prices because of their monopoly on the market so it's priced closer to £400 rather than £250.

The 1080 is a replacement for the 980 but again, price has increased by £100-150. They've also add another £150 on what Maxwell Titan cost as the new one is silly money.

Nate1492 to Nohm
30 Aug 16 #43
The 1070 is not in the same performance bracket at the 970.

The 1080 replaces the 980 ti's place.

The 1070 also replaces the 980 ti's place and the 980.

The 1060 6GB covers the 970.

1060 3GB covers 960/970.

You'll notice there isn't a 'ti' version of the 1080.

I have been contemplating this card even though I have a 1080, im less intensive resolution now (2560x1080) compared to 3440x1440 I was on, not sure what to do.. could nab this and pocket £250
Minstadave to yoyo59
29 Aug 16 #21
Absolutely would go for it. 1080 is terrible value in comparison and will plummet should a 1080Ti be released or AMD manage to compete at the high end.

Keep the 1080. 1440p max with 1080, some games slip below 60 fps with ultra settings on the 1070.

MSI are usually rated up there with the best of them, the only issue this time round (as previously mentioned) is with the micron memory modules they use not over clocking as well as the Samsung ones used by other manufacturers, so depending on your individual use case this may be an issue or it may not, either way I suspect it would affect the resale value of this card.

Hacienda
29 Aug 16 1 #33
Bit of a gamble going msi for a 1070, I believe there are issues with the micron memory on some of them. Besides my bias against them after being stuck with a 280x from them where they wouldn't resolve screen flicker and artifacting (most other companies resolved it with a new bios) up until then I've always gone with and highly recommended MSI, I'm sure they don't care but I'll never buy or recommend them again.
benfisher1991 to Hacienda
29 Aug 16 1 #36
The micron memory issue is only that they don't overclock as high as the samsung modules.

Would like to see AIB (non-blower) 1070s in the 320 - 350 range. And the most premium ones topping out at 375. Not sure why they can't sell this at 360 like the Palait.
