Another option is to buy the Moto G4 locked to Tesco Mobile for £149. Add something cheap to get the total to £150 so you can add the voucher code TDX-WYMJ which gives you £20 off a £150 spend.
You can get the phone unlocked on ebay for around £1.15
After voucher and unlock you will get the phone for around £131.15. Maybe worth the trouble to save a few extra pounds or to get the phone in blue.

The phone is pretty good. Nice screen, OK camera and responsive. My only gripe is the lack of compass. Google maps points the wrong way when following walking directions, and can't use automatic mode on Sky maps when the kids ask me which stars they are looking at.

It is OK. It finally comes with 2GB of RAM, but they have also cut some corners (no gyro, with is not ideal for Pokemon Go). At this price it is great value.

Thanks for this. It has saved me a lot of time reading reviews. The compass thing is a deal breaker for me. I had a windows phone a few years ago without compass and I couldn't get on with the mapping. Mush prefer when the map orients itself to where I am facing.

I just noticed the Motorola have added NFC to the spec of the G4 Play, which means it's compatible with Android pay... It seems ridiculous that NFC is missing from the other G4 models, especially the G4 Plus with it's fingerprint sensor.

Are you using the SD card as 'portable storage' or in 'adopted internal storage mode' ?
I thought if you select it as adopted internal storage it acts just in that way - without any problems from the apps?
In my experience its basically no different to apps2sd in lollipop. Most apps still can't be moved to the SD card, and many that can still don't work properly (crashing, widgets missing, widgets not updating).
The only real difference is that the SD card becomes encrypted so that its only accessible on the phone.

If you buy from Motorola themselves the 4th Gen models are dual SIM. At least they were when I was looking a month ago. From elsewhere you need to check first.

I bought one of these for my partner , camera and screen are truely excellent for a phone of this price , its bright and images are crisp . Processor appears to cope with anything thrown at it so far , no stalling. Personally the shell does feel a little cheap to me but most people would put it in a case. For those enjoying a small handy phone this isn't for you , its quite big. One downside to my partners previous iphone is the sound quality during calls , it doesn't cancel out background noise very well and very poor in windy conditions. It comes loaded with android marshmallow which my partner loves.
Its everything my partner needs and only lacks in areas which she can cope with however it may not be for everyone. I purchased this one from John Lewis giving it a "good" 2 years guarantee and good customer service. White dual sim version ( yes it will work fine with just one sim ).

I found the Moto G to be a bit physically big for my taste. Given that the Moto E (3rd gen - with LTE) has most of the features (but, just like the G4 annoyingly no compass!) with a 5inch screen and has been on sale for as low as £35 in HDUK recently I preferred it!

That was in previous versions to and not all apps can be moved, Marshmallow introduced adoptable storage where external memory becomes part of internal memory so there's no need move apps manually as you describe, either way not all apps can be installed onto SD card, which is what he was saying.
BrianM
16 Aug 16#82
Yes sorry! it's the Moto E (2nd Gen,LTE) which impressed me. The 3rd Gen is, as you say, due within weeks and will further improve both the screen and camera - and make it even more a "smaller G4"! - It won't, however, be as cheap as the 2nd Gen has been recently (~£99 or slightly lower)!

chancooluk to FrugalFergal
16 Aug 162#93
The Samsung J3 2016 is significantly weaker than the Moto G4, despite having a Super AMOLED display:
Slower Speedtrum processor
Only 8GB storage with 3GB available
Only 1.5GB RAM
Currently stuck on Lollipop
Cameras are not as good as the Moto
Screen is lower resolution 720p vs 1080p, and uses a pentile matrix (reduces sharpness)
It doesn't even have an ambient light sensor to automatically change screen brightness.
The J3 is more of a competitor to the Moto E series rather than the Moto G4.
pibpob
16 Aug 16#91
Super Amoled might have a better contrast ratio and power consumption, but might also suffer in the colour purity area. Other than that, it's 1/2" smaller which to me is an advantage (esp. given same resolution).
Not sure how durable that glass is compared with Gorilla Glass. It only has Android 5 apparently, and 1.5G RAM vs 2G. Fewer camera megapixels but that doesn't mean worse. Otherwise, I'd have to start digging into reviews and would also be interested to hear others' opinions.

Ah, they've changed it back down to 10%. They seem to do that every now and then. I still think, even then, it's a better deal to get a dual sim phone, unless you're OK with white and want to take a chance on John Lewis (of course, I guess, it can be returned unused to JL if not dual sim?)
