Me too because I have one as well :confused: it is actually quite sturdy, mine's taken quite a few knocks and it's still going.

Thirty quid's about what this phone is worth. Obviously it's entry level so if you're looking for performance go elsewhere. Swiping through the menus etc is quite zippy but browsing the web and opening apps can be laggy and slow. The screen is grainy and changes colour even if you twist the phone just 10 degrees to either side. Speaker is loud, although not good quality. Battery life is mediocre. For a small phone it's actually quite chunky and feels heavy. As a call/text machine it's fine but I think this is strictly a young child's/granddad's first smartphone.

You buy these phones for the camera value.

Even with a lot less apps overall in the Microsoft store, everything I need is there, and pretty much all of what would be considered the mainstream is present in one form or another, by that I mean if there isn't an official app for a particular service, there are usually several third-party alternatives, which in some cases are better than official apps anyway. The one thing I do wish was more supported is banking apps, these are few and far between unfortunately, though Metrobank has one I believe.

It's hit and miss on the apps front with Microsoft as their release schedule for the Windows 10 Mobile OS is a bit slap dash :disappointed: but the apps out there are pretty decent for my needs, especially if I can get the ones that link into desktop apps so the data can be shared between both environments for redundancy & also I prefer typing on a physical keyboard! :smile:


The lag related issues I've seen on the L435, L535, L550 and L650 have been down to the release of the OS bundled with the handset at the time of it's manufacture (it was an older build) - for all of the ones I've worked on for family & friends it's been a quick update to the latest production release of W10M, a reset and then a reinstallation of apps and data to get it sorted out.

The times I see the resuming screens pop up is when I have a lot of apps opened up doing multiple tasks - bear in mind at the end of the day the L435 is bundled with a low spec dual-core CPU and it's not a quad-core Android handset.


+1 - Agree completely - there is talk of Microsoft releasing a 'Surface Mobile Phone' next year but the apps presence does need to increase, as the Microsoft Store is being overhauled to organise the existing apps for better management & downloads.

Strangely you don't need to actually buy a top-op but merely select the type of Tariff that you want linked to the SIM card.

Although Windows phones have very little market share, Microsoft have not given up on them, recently the anniversary update of Windows 10 has been pushed out for both desktop and mobile, and for users on the insider program, they are already receiving previews of the next big update aka Redstone2. While the updates don't translate into more sales necessarily, they've hardly given up on mobile.

AVOID !!! :smile: it is laggy and has the worst screen ive ever seen on a smartphone... you can buy so many chinese phones for almost same price on android and... any screen will be better than this one.. :smile: plus ive bought it like 18 months ago from CPW for 35 quid, brand new..

I loved my 530, my dad still had his 520 and still going strong. They were great week built phones, but the app gap eventually got me. I loved the windows OS, shame Microsoft have up so quickly, they could have had such a loyal happy following. From what I read it's in freefall now, Microsoft even publish apps for iPhone before their own os? That seemed to help kill it even quicker.

Can you perhaps expand upon that wonderfully short statement and clarify whether you can purchase the handset without needing to buy the top-up as well...would be handy for other HUKD members that are considering purchasing the handset and see which is the best but also cheapest option between those two.

For a cheap (but locked) Windows Phone, this is a good price and it will be much smoother than similarly priced Android phones.
But, this could be one of the last few cheap Windows Phones we see in the UK since Microsoft stopped making their own handsets and no other OEM seems to want to take on the consumer market.

It'll make a good spare phone, or a cheap disposable for the kids.
