Great little smartphone and cheap enough to just be a replacement for the kids or a damaged phone.

Could anyone help me out with this phone at all please? Would it run the cycling app "Strava" and is the GPS decent enough to do so? Thanks so much in advance.

There doesn't appear to be a native Strava app in place but having a quick look at the Microsoft Store shows a few third party apps that you might want to check out further (I've included links to three of them at the bottom of this post) - with regards to GPS I'm not a hundred percent sure, as I'm not that familiar with those apps and how well they would link in together. I would suggest looking into further via the Strava communities out there to get a better idea and see what they say, as the last thing I would want to do is to provide the wrong advice to you.
Me too because I have one as well  it is actually quite sturdy, mine's taken quite a few knocks and it's still going.

Thirty quid's about what this phone is worth. Obviously it's entry level so if you're looking for performance go elsewhere. Swiping through the menus etc is quite zippy but browsing the web and opening apps can be laggy and slow. The screen is grainy and changes colour even if you twist the phone just 10 degrees to either side. Speaker is loud, although not good quality. Battery life is mediocre. For a small phone it's actually quite chunky and feels heavy. As a call/text machine it's fine but I think this is strictly a young child's/granddad's first smartphone.

It can take a beating and keep on ticking!!! Of course now I'm feeling a lot older now, as I must be a Granddad for using it!!!
I think at the end of the day people really need to go into a store and try out the phones they want but not sure if Tesco still stocks them.

Not in the case of the L435 - it's a low-end fixed focus camera with no flash (2 MP, f/2.7, 36mm, via GSMArena). This handset is part of the entry level grading for Microsoft, prior to them stopping the manufacturing of the Lumia range, so if you wanted something better you'd be looking at the Lumia 650 upwards for the 'new' handsets (8 MP, f/2.2, 28mm, autofocus, LED flash, via GSMArena).
Older models would be the Lumia 640/640XL along with the 830 and 930...hell even the older 820 & 925 series have better cameras in them, as that's why two of my friends have kept them on the go - one is using the 820 as his primary and the other is using her 925 as a backup/camera system.

Even with a lot less apps overall in the Microsoft store, everything I need is there, and pretty much all of what would be considered the mainstream is present in one form or another, by that I mean if there isn't an official app for a particular service, there are usually several third-party alternatives, which in some cases are better than official apps anyway. The one thing I do wish was more supported is banking apps, these are few and far between unfortunately, though Metrobank has one I believe.

I've been asked what apps I use myself on my handset and I'm listing a few of them below (note that the bulk of the apps I use are business related & not listed in order but also a couple are paid for apps) - also the first link is to a list of apps via a third party technical blog.
It's hit and miss on the apps front with Microsoft as their release schedule for the Windows 10 Mobile OS is a bit slap dash :disappointed: but the apps out there are pretty decent for my needs, especially if I can get the ones that link into desktop apps so the data can be shared between both environments for redundancy & also I prefer typing on a physical keyboard!
The lag related issues I've seen on the L435, L535, L550 and L650 have been down to the release of the OS bundled with the handset at the time of it's manufacture (it was an older build) - for all of the ones I've worked on for family & friends it's been a quick update to the latest production release of W10M, a reset and then a reinstallation of apps and data to get it sorted out.
The times I see the resuming screens pop up is when I have a lot of apps opened up doing multiple tasks - bear in mind at the end of the day the L435 is bundled with a low spec dual-core CPU and it's not a quad-core Android handset.
+1 - Agree completely - there is talk of Microsoft releasing a 'Surface Mobile Phone' next year but the apps presence does need to increase, as the Microsoft Store is being overhauled to organise the existing apps for better management & downloads.

Strangely you don't need to actually buy a top-op but merely select the type of Tariff that you want linked to the SIM card.

Although Windows phones have very little market share, Microsoft have not given up on them, recently the anniversary update of Windows 10 has been pushed out for both desktop and mobile, and for users on the insider program, they are already receiving previews of the next big update aka Redstone2. While the updates don't translate into more sales necessarily, they've hardly given up on mobile.

I loved my 530, my dad still had his 520 and still going strong. They were great week built phones, but the app gap eventually got me. I loved the windows OS, shame Microsoft have up so quickly, they could have had such a loyal happy following. From what I read it's in freefall now, Microsoft even publish apps for iPhone before their own os? That seemed to help kill it even quicker.

I know where your coming from but for me they are more than ideal for my needs plus I can easily update the OS (without having to worry about custom ROMs) along with the apps quite easily - I personally can't be bothered dealing with Android & Apple iOS handsets anymore, as at least the Windows handsets are cheap to run plus the support communities are still more than large enough to get sufficient help online - for example following guides online I've updated a non-supported Lumia 820 & a 925 up to the latest Windows Insider OS Release for two friends of mine, with both handsets running perfectly fine for them.
I suppose it's all down to personal choice at the end of the day, as for me I'm help being in with the uncool crowd!!!

Can you perhaps expand upon that wonderfully short statement and clarify whether you can purchase the handset without needing to buy the top-up as well...would be handy for other HUKD members that are considering purchasing the handset and see which is the best but also cheapest option between those two.

It appears you may have to buy a top-up for it, which would be another £10 on top of the price.[quote=skykid3]

It appears you may have to buy a top-up for it, which would be another £10 on top of the price.
It depends upon what apps you need at the end of the day - myself I only use less than a dozen extra apps, with a good few linking into desktop apps so I can synchronize the data between my systems i.e. Wunderlist for my task management.
There are other OEMs stepping in with new handsets in the pipeline and being released to the public, it's just taking some time - agree though that it is a cheap handset, with native support for upgrading to Windows 10 Mobile as that's what I've done for myself, a family member, a friend & his wife.
For a cheap (but locked) Windows Phone, this is a good price and it will be much smoother than similarly priced Android phones.
But, this could be one of the last few cheap Windows Phones we see in the UK since Microsoft stopped making their own handsets and no other OEM seems to want to take on the consumer market.
It'll make a good spare phone, or a cheap disposable for the kids.
