Malta, what a bomb site - St Pauls bay is dire and boring as hell.....Malta ia a nice place but this location is horrible - at this price its a good deal if you just want the sun so heat for that but SPB... yew..

I dont expect its very warm that time of year. Plus the one and only time I went I was unlucky enough to be in one of those "Hotels from Hell". Most beaches are rocky but Golden Beach (or it might be Sandy Beach) is very nice. St Julains is where all the nightlife is and is very good. Considering this is the price of filling a car with fuel its a very very good deal.

PS Malta had a problem with Cockroaches when I went. Might be sorted now.

Malta is fine, but it's really financially deprived and the country lacks any real investment in anything since its independence. I went in March and the British coach driver was telling me the countries average salary was around £600 a month.

Plenty of people in the UK get similar income after tax, auto enrolled workplace pension, £3.30 apprentice rate etc. I dare say you can live a better quality of life in Malta albeit without as many cinema multiplexes or overpriced tram systems.

Thats nothing the average wage in Slovakia is £400 a month!
Its the best country in the world if you want to live cheaply with a stress free agrarian lifestyl.
Slovakia has the cleanest most unspoilt land in the world!

PS. This is a great deal - who cares about the weather just enjoy a new place to visit and see a bit of WWII history.

You obviously don't know what your talking about. Their has been a hell of a lot of investment in recent years. have you been to Valletta waterfront where luxury cruise ships come in and out daily. have you been to the knew aquarium at qawra. have you not seen the huge improvement in the roads. Have you seen the huge improvements made at Mdina. this is just few of many huge investments not to mention smart city. Maybe you should do some homework before making ridiculous statements. Their is still on going improvements as well but can't all be done overnight. Rant over.

I was a regular visitor to Malta 3 times a year almost every year for 8 years. This was in the 90s - early 00s. It was lovely and peaceful back then. I went last year and it's now a very British-like tourist island, full of McDonalds, BHS, M&S and other tourist tat shops. The St. X towns have become even bigger party clubs and the locals have become mostly very rude, whereas before they were super friendly and had a lot of time for foreigners. There have however been a boatload of renovations to the island, especially in Sliema and Valletta, and it is looking a lot more modern and functional. The prices for food are still very cheap, however - especially if you know where to go. I'd definitely go back to Malta, but it isn't what it once was.

And please, don't believe the refugee rumours. We saw hardly any, despite being told the island was apparently overrun with them...

The coldness of people in response to the refugee crisis is truly heartbreaking. I don't know if it's just due to them being misinformed, a vocal minority or if there's genuinely that many selfish people around at the moment but either way it's depressing.

Refugees are routinely talked about in such derogatory ways that surely the closest comparison in recent history is the way the jews were seen in nazi Germany. People don't see humanity in them, just a problem to get rid of, inhuman, it's horrific and so common that people think its normal. Sad times.
xenophon
18 Aug 16 4 #33
An economic migrant. But to many hand-wringing lefties ALL those leaving Africa are refugees. Some are genuine refugees for sure that have lost their homes and maybe their families. But most I spoke to in Malta on the many times I visit - there were over 17 thousand from Africa in 2013 - seemed to be economic migrants jumping on the migrant bandwagon and simply hoping for a better economic life in Europe. Nothing wrong with that of course, but is Europe willing to take in most of Africa's poor that want a much better life and standard of living, which would no doubt cover the majority in Africa. Hardly feasible or desirable for either continent. But to call them all genuine refugees fleeing war and persecution is dishonest. Most are fleeing poverty.
xenophon
18 Aug 16 3 #34
Those in Malta aren't from Syria. Also many coming to Europe are from many different countries not just Syria. And Syria was not peace and hugging before the British, they were part of the Ottoman Empire and then the French.

Just realised that you may be being sarcastic. It's just a lot of people come out with that ill informed guff.

Talk about going off topic lol!

No-one has even mentioned Trip Advisor. There are some very positive comments from guests who have stayed at this hotel just a few weeks ago, and a few negatives too, but the positives seem to be in the majority!.

Sounds like a lovely hotel at a bargain price for those who can go from Bournemouth airport, so thanks Holiday Pirates for an amazing bargain here, well spotted.

Can't say that I noticed either beggars or refugee's, I spent the whole of January on Malta, had I seen any beggar's or refugee's I should have happily given them enough Euro's for at least a meal.
xenophon to bigdaveplym
18 Aug 16 #38
Really? I've been to Malta many times over the last few years, have a friend out there, and I have seen plenty of migrants there and the occasional beggar. Most are in Valletta, many gather around the bus station where I've spoken to some. However when I was there last year I must admit I didn't see half as many as I had in 2013/2014 so many may have moved on elsewhere after getting their EU passports.

I'm usually based in Bugibba within St Paul's Bay, which I find very nice, not dire and boring like someone said early. If you are young and looking for night clubs rather than just pubs and bars then it probably will seem boring and St Julian's resort is a better bet.
xenophon
18 Aug 16 #39
This deal is pretty good but not worthy of 600 degrees of heat. Around Nov/Dec you can find a lot of cheap hotels offering a similar rate and with breakfast in Malta. Flying from Bournemouth is what makes this so cheap. So very good for those who can get to Bournemouth at little extra expense. Flying from other airports will add another 40 or 50 quid per person to this holiday.

Malta's refugee problems started when it joined the EU, prior to that the boats passed Malta and headed for Italy.

Sorry if the truth hurts, but it's for your own good.

Just because you called this land after the Germanic tribes you came from, doesn't make your ancestors any less economic migrants, unless you believe that all Chinese have a right to move to china town. As for the pensions, we are living longer and having less children - that's less money to be shared among more people. Working migrants provide more money to our pension system as do their children if they settle, stop them coming over, you ensure you can't live on your pension as "comfortably" by which I mean on borderline poverty, as our current retired. I'm sure you have plans to provide for your retirement, but if they all go wrong, you'll be glad that people came here to work
JasonThomas2014
19 Aug 16 #55
what are you on about?
xenophon
19 Aug 16 #56
Do you have any understanding of historical time? Trying to imply that I am exactly the same as migrants that come here now because I may have had an ancient ancestor who was a migrant is ridiculous and facile. There is an enormous difference of around 1500 years and 60 generations that you remarkably find so easy to dismiss. They formed and created England. They were the first English! And the scores of generations that succeeded them, established the English nation and its identity. To compare it to Chinese living in Chinatown is an absurd analogy.

As for three hundred thousand workers coming here every year (probably more as that is the net migration figure) to "relieve our pension crisis" they also add to our housing crisis and with around 4 million having come here in just 19 years they have contributed heavily to that crisis, not just to the coffers of the treasury or the profits of big business. Add in the burden to public services, roads and transport, schools, and the environment which is often overlooked, mass migration isn't as positive as some paint it, and may well be the opposite.

And who are going to pay for their pensions? A vastly growing migrant population means even greater numbers of elderly people in the future. Which will mean even more numbers of migrants to pay their pensions in the future and so on. Short term solution which will cause greater long term problems as the population grows exponentially and the problem of paying their pensions grows the same.

Btw, between 410 and 560 AD (150 years) somewhere between 20,000 and 100,000 came to our shores. Compare that to about 4,000,000 or so in less than 20 years now.

I went to Malta back in July and it was beautiful. We managed to get to see a few locations. The buses are fantastic especially as they had air conditioning in the 104f heat! One evening we missed the bus and the bus driver stopped for us on a hill!!

The people are so helpful, polite and proud of their country.

We asked for directions to get to Valletta and we asked a lady who suggested to get the ferry then the lift up to the Barrakka Gardens she said "it's beautiful way to get across the island!"

We highly recommend the Captain Morgan Jet Extreme speed boat to the Blue Lagoon at Malta's sister island. What an AWESOME way to travel across the island.
The speed boat is the naughty boy of the Captain Morgan fleet! Fantastic!

There's so many different places to eat right across the island to cater all tastes.
I has lots to offer for every type of traveller from the young to go and party the night away to travellers
who want to just get away and have a relaxing peaceful holiday.

Malta is an island with so much history. I've not been there for 24 years and from what has changed the areas that cater for the tourists but it still has the Maltese houses that makes the island for what it is, and island of history! Those that complain that it's boring as hell, it's beaches are not good then I suggest they do their research bon the island before booking their holiday!

I'm a 30something Englishman living in Malta and feel I should clarify a few things:

There isn't an immigrant problem. Yes there are immigrants (like most of Western Europe) and like all of us they're trying to improve their lives by working hard.

Crime is very low

Cockroaches are quite common (umm, it's hot and humid here!)

I've seen about 3 beggars in as many years
