Flagships specs ala Samsung S7 etc at a budget price!

Bought this slightly cheaper on AliExpress for my sister but when I tried to create this deal using AliExpress as the link it got rejected so here I try again...

Sister has an ageing Sony Z3 Compact and wanted something powerful with more onboard storage but she doesn't have much money and wants something small. I remember this phone was announced a couple of months back and just checked to see if it was available now and low and behold it is! I know she's going to miss the IP68 water resistance, front facing speakers and possibly some other stuff from the Sony but I'm sure she'll be pleased with the fingerprint sensor, extra storage and speed of this phone.

Anyway, that's enough of an intro. Here are the juicy details:

Specs:

CPU: Snapdragon 820 2.15Ghz (Not the underclocked version like the Xiaomi Mi5)
RAM: 4GB LPDDR4
Storage: 64GB eMMC 5.1
Main Camera: Samsung 13 MP ISOCELL, f/2.2, phase detection autofocus, 1/2.6" sensor size, 1.34 µm pixel size with 4K video @ 30 fps
Front Camera: 8 MP, f/2.0, 1.4 µm pixel size, 1080p
UI: Android Marshmallow v6.0.1 skinned with ZUI 2.0
Screen: 5.0" FullHD 1080p LTPS IPS LCD (441 PPI)
SIM: Dual Nano SIM
4G support: Bands 1, 3, 7, 8 (Three, EE, Vodafone Supported but no O2 4G support due to missing B20 band)
Bluetooth: 4.1
Dimensions: 141.7 x 68.9 x 8.5 mm
Weight: 149 g
Battery: 3500mAh with Quick Charge 3.0 (83% in 30 min)
Others: USB Type-C connector, Fingerprint sensor

Pros:
- Uses latest CPU and hardware is enough to match raw performance of current gen flagships (e.g. Samsung S7, LG G5, HTC 10, Xiaomi Mi5, OnePlus 3)
- Stupidly cheap price
- Lots of RAM and storage
- Fingerprint sensor
- Compact size
- USB Type-C connector
- Large battery with QC3.0
- Reviews seem to mention that GPS and WiFi are good
- Seems to be good dev support from the community

Cons:
- No MicroSD slot
- Design looks very boring in my opinion
- A little large and thick for a 5.0" phone with only 70.6% screen-to-body ratio (but I guess the large battery makes up for it)
- No B20 band (My Xiaomi Mi Note with no B20 band has better consistent performance than my OnePlus 3 with B20 though on Three!)
- Reviews mention average camera performance
- Reviews mention an average screen (not amazing colours nor bright)
- Storage could be faster (I believe all flagships use UFS2.0 storage now which is quite a bit faster than eMMC 5.1)
- Lack of warranty

I will report back when mine arrives!

The first comment will also list a few reviews I've found along with accessories to accompany the phone.

I bought from this seller too but I only just ordered last night so can't say anything but I've bought all my china smartphones from aliexpress before (Xiaomi, Meizu and ZTE Nubia) and the only one I had to send back was the Meizu MX4 after I stupidly used a nano SIM in an adapter and then the adapter got stuck and when I forced it out it ripped the SIM card reader contacts. It cost £10 to send it back and then they charged £10 when they spotted that it was user damage but then they sent it back via DHL which meant I received it in around 3 working days after it was repaired. Touch wood I won't have to send anything else back but £20 + roughly 3 weeks of waiting time for a repair wasn't too shabby.

Good spec but one thing to consider is that you are spending £207 with essentially no warranty...
If you've tried getting warranty support from Banggood and the likes before then you'll understand what I mean

depends whether that risk bothers you or not...If not and you don't need O2 4G then this is a lot of handset for the money.
If the screen was 5.5" Plus then I'd order one myself as I like bigger phones, for now I'm still looking for a Note4 replacement at a relevant price as the Note 7 pricing is a joke.
Ulti to Uridium
29 Aug 16 #14
If you're after a 5.5" then you can't go wrong with a OnePlus 3 (£329 direct from OP). I have one myself but GPS/signal has been worse than my Xiaomi Mi Note and battery life is average so I'm going to sell mine and grab a S7 Edge (£410 from O2 Refresh, nabbed the last black one). I would have liked the Note 7 myself too but yeah £700+ for a phone ain't happening. Even £410 for what will be a seemingly second hand phone is already pushing it. I just hope if it's not in good enough condition then I can reject it but from my (single) experience of O2 Refresh and what I hear from everyone else, they've always received a perfect phone.

Bought the ZUK Z1 from Amazon, delivered next day via Prime. Replaced my Note 4 with and am very, very happy with it. Is recommend it to anyone looking for a phablet.

I was looking for a phone with a physical home key which is why I stick with Samsung generally speaking (using the fabulous Galaxy Tab S2 as I type). But also wanted a big screen, big battery, plenty of onboard storage so I didn't read to rely on a memory card and a good fingerprint reader. This phone ticked all the boxes and came I at £245 delivered next day.

Features-wise as mentioned it has the physical home key which acts as a very responsive 360° fingerprint reader, the tap to wake/sleep feature like the LGs do, a 4100 mAh battery and 64gb storage. I charged once a day with the Note 4, I charge once every two days with this phone. I managed to pick up a nice case and desktop charger through Amazon Prime so overall I'm very happy and can't recommend the phone enough.

Good price! Great effort in post OP!
Would prefer banggood to aliexpress, heard of a few postage scams on aliexpress lately, so I'd be extra careful who you're ordering from. Can get money back in the end from CC but would be a PITA!

Wish manufacturers would stop putting pointless physical buttons on the front of phones. This phone could be almost a CM shorter or have a bigger screen without it... I thought Google had banned them from android OEMs...

But it never actually reduces the bezel, and simply just reduces the screen size with virtual buttons. They then never disappear in things like games.

So on the flipside of this I hate software buttons.

You said;

"If you're after a 5.5" then you can't go wrong with a OnePlus 3"

Followed by

So which is it?

:man:
Ulti
30 Aug 16 #34
Worse than my Xiaomi Mi Note in relative terms but not bad in absolute terms. I thought that gaining the B20 band on the OP3 meant that I would get much better signal but from quick tests the Mi Note is the same if not better than the OP3 for cell reception.

I play Pokemon Go with friends that have iPhones and one that has an OnePlus 2 and I get more accurate GPS.

Battery life is average again, but not bad so you can do much worse!

Indoors and light gaming I can get 6-7 hours SOT on the OP3 but outdoors playing PoGo etc I only get around 3 hours SOT.

The hardware button is not as useful as software ones. They aren't contextual, the software ones can change to what's on screen (e.g the hide your keyboard button). Google can't change hardware buttons between software updates. Remember the menu button? And when they added the app switch button which had to go behind a long press on hardware button phones... Now we also have gestures on the home button for Google now which is pretty useful.

Perhaps they keep the bottom bezel for ergonomics, because it's uncomfortable to reach there with a thumb, especially one handed? The Z3 puts a front facing speaker there, better use of the space IMO!

Also QHD is good for VR, With 1080p you can see the pixels in a VR headset. But 1080p keeps the price low and battery life better so I can see why some flagships aren't upgrading yet!

30 Aug 16 #55
quite possibly true , at the moment - but don't encourage them , how long before some apps require a fingerprint ?, if its on the phone no excuse not to do it - they will probably hit the army of senseless facebook users first to get a foothold, they tend to just jump when told to.

I just wouldn't pay for something i don't want, wont use and don't want to see expanding to all such devices - cant use a fingerprint if there is no reader on my phone.
Uridium
30 Aug 16 2 #56
Same could be said for many components on a phone...I've never used the front camera on a phone...try buying a Smartphone without one, I don;t have a Facebook account and have no interest in it yet try buying a smartphone that doesn't come with it pre-installed (even worse it actually quite hard to find out which phones do or do not have it pre-installed).

Disregarding a handset as it has a feature you don't want is a little misguided IMO, I'd be more concerned in making sure the phone has the minimum features you do want rather then disregarding a phone because it has features you will not use...

If Privacy and security are a big concern for you then I'd look away from Android completely....
abzycar
30 Aug 16 #57
So... A smaller OnePlus 2?
dayuum
30 Aug 16 #58
Why would an app require a fingerprint? Fingerprint data is only stored on the device anyway and apps don't have any direct access to it - regardless, i don't understand what the paranoia is . Fingerprint readers are convenient, fast and are only going to become more prevalent whether you buy a device with one or not
DocRobotnik

30 Aug 16 1 #60
A fingerprint sensor is a bit different though isnt it... i'm talking about biometrics.

Buying a phone with biometrics is misguided in my opinion, as it will encourage the development and supply of more that use it.

This takes privacy and security concerns to another level, there are certainly downsides to using google developed OS in regard to privacy, but what are the options? , using the internet on any device/platform has all the same concerns, they all revolve around google, someone help us if a fingerprint login is a kin to a google search in 5 -10 years time - too late to think about it then, like raising the google privacy issue now when its been embraced into every area of technology with much more depth than you would like to believe already...

oh and there are plenty of phones without facebook on, i haven't had anything to do with it on my phones for a long time.

Seems you have a lot to learn , and i don't have the time to teach you sadly - but Ignorance is bliss i guess, so enjoy it.

I'll give you something, but there is a much more depth to whole concept - personally i hope the stupidity is grasped by the industry and they start to disappear - cant help but think hands will be forced though , certainly scope for conflicts of interest and dubious intentions in abundance here.

i'll elaborate on just 1 small angle of many - how many times do you leave a copy of your password around your house, car or anywhere you go ? never  ? and your answer to the same question if you use a fingerprint to authenticate ?

And how about when the early gen password authentication services are hacked - what will you do , look out for a cheap deal on hukd for some new fingers because your hand is now compromised ? , and now you cant get into your bank because they only accept fingerprint authentication thanks to its 'popularity' years earlier - yes its fantasy at the moment, but compromised online or physically, its an irredeemable risk that is edging closer to reality.

and as it only brings problems, no benefits at all, and its a extra cost then i don't think it should forced on people.

and so hence my opinion,

thank you.

If you want something cheaper, try the Lenovo Vibe shot; I paid £100 more for this about 6 months ago. Free delivery upgrade as well through DPD.

It may require a change of ROM, which is very easy; my wife's is now on MM.

I would rather have the MicroSD, the internal storage can become corrupt (its happened to me) and at this point your phone is practically useless while with the SD card i would just swap it out, if you do end up filling up your internal storage prepare to deal with juggling files, SD card speed isn't so bad that i really long to use the internal storage but i'm only speaking for my self here.

Truth be told, no phone in 2016 should come without a micro SD slot as well as ample internal storage

bla bla bla... it's a convenience, nothing more. Yes someone could lift your fingerprints if they really wanted to, but if it gets nicked on the street or you lose it are they likely to have them? No... Unless you're harbouring nuclear launch codes on your phone, it's probably sufficient for the average joe. With regards to 'early gen fingerprint services', exploits will likely be found get into phones regardless of the security used on them.

And if you're worried about fingerprints being compromised, even if fingerprint security ever became so ubiquitous (it won't outside of multiple factor authentication) what's to stop that happening anyway whether you have a phone with it or not?

It hasn't brought any problems, there is the benefit of speed and convenience and it's literally not being forced on anyone at all.

I'll vote hot on this as you get a lot of phone for the money - however, no band 20 LTE and no NFC are deal breakers for me.

30 Aug 16 #70
Still gone completely over your head, but im sure it will dawn on you sooner or later - probably later though with that mindset , you are of course welcome to your thoughts , as am i.

Its not about getting into your phone, much bigger than that, you are either just pretending you dot get it to troll or you are really oblivious, which is shocking tbh.
acholmes2000
30 Aug 16 #71
Come on then don't keep us in suspense... whats this massive risk you speak of i'd really love to know, so far i've not come across any stories of anyone getting into any trouble by using a scanner????

30 Aug 16 1 #72
massive fearmongering... what's to stop someone getting your fingerprints right now if they really want them? What exactly is the much bigger part, what could someone do with your fingerprints other than get into your phone?

Nothing, hence why i don't want to use it as my password .... : /

And i'd hate it if fools that did, encouraged professional organisations to take it to other levels........

Stop and think, perhaps do your own research if need to start asking about the fundamentals

The phone is great. 64gb, not sure who needs much more than that. Most UK bands so will be fine for a lot of people. I've never used NFC in my lifetime but can see the benefits as Android Pay gets more mainstream but right now I'd be happy with a phone that doesn't have it... What makes this deal cold is laying that much money down with banggood to begin with and the £40 + handling fee you'll probably be hit with if it ever arrives.... This price fulfilled by Amazon or from a decent reseller on eBay and I'd be all over it.

I haven't seen anything negative before about signal strength, where do you live?
jacksonliam
30 Aug 16 2 #81
You leave your fingerprint on everything you touch anyway. If someone wanted your fingerprint all they have to do is follow you around for an hour.

The phone at least stores it under a one way cryptographic hash. Either inside the trusted execution engine of the CPU or in the write-only fingerprint hardware itself. It's not in some server somewhere.

For someone to remotely access the data required to reconstruct your fingerprint there would have to be:
An exploit in android to allow remote code execution (has happened).
An exploit to run this code within the TEE (no known exploits). To do that will require it to be signed, so the manufacturer's signing key leaked (no known events for Android OEMs)
If it's stored in the sensor, a bug which allows reading from the fingerprint sensor memory (this would be a big deal).
The hash would have to be crackable, or brute forced at a large expense to the attacker.

So really, the fingerprint sensor is a nice convinence factor and stops someone from reading my PIN over my shoulder and stops me having to remember a new pin every month (you rotate your passwords, right?).

So put your tinfoil hat away... Engineers much cleverer than you have figured this out.

Fingerprints will never be used outside of a 'something you are' mechanism to access a 'something you have' keystore, perhaps along with a 'something you know' PIN. So having remote knowledge of your biometrics is all but useless.
check_your_bank
30 Aug 16 #82
you're talking about a specific mechanism not the concept, and who is to say other mechanisms wont be used, there is potential, im not a hacker - no hacks were ever known before they were exploited though, if what you say is true you have already outlined the procedure and im sure you are far from the worlds expert on such matters.

Its an unnecessary step in the direction of the undesirable, and as you also repeated from the other guys post, your fingerprints are easily obtainable, so why use them as a password ? its less secure and has far more attached risk than a password.

Using these devices will encourage their use for more serious applications, would you use them for your bank ? Mechanisms to capture this data will be constructed, if you believe categorically that biometric data will never be compromised and harvested from a device with a fingerprint reader, well that's a pretty big prediction to make and i hope you don't have money on it.

You are free to band around tin foil slurs in an attempt to undermine what i say, but the potential issues are far from conspiracy theory sadly.

It lacks UK 4g Bands so signal strength will be rubbish. In effect you are buying a tablet and not a mobile phone.
Ulti
30 Aug 16 #84
Maybe you should read some of the posts where I've mentioned that my OnePlus 3 has all the UK bands but my Xiaomi Mi Note, like this ZUK Z2, is missing band B20 and my Xiaomi Mi Note actually got better signal than my OnePlus 3.

B20 is only vital if you want to use 4G on O2. If you're on any other network then you'll be fine. However, this is coming from experience in London - I don't see how it would behave differently in other parts of the world but I reckon the phone itself will make more of a different compared to with what bands it will support, unless you're on O2.

sam_of_london
31 Aug 16 1 #87
B20/ 800 is best 4g band on all networks in UK not just O2. 4g phone can combine all 4g bands available and get greater data bandwidth. That's the main attraction of cat 12-13 snapdragon 820 modem. I would not buy any phone without proper UK bands, just because it can make voice calls on 2g but data download speed is poor due to lack of proper bands.

Specs-wise comparison here

Note that the Mi5 comes in 3 models (ram & storage-wise), has NFC, infrared, a larger screen & thinner body (admittedly in exchange for a lower-capacity battery) - all of which appeal to me.

What are the prices of the 3 different Mi5 models btw?

Hi just wondering if your phone has turned up yet.

I currently have the xiaomi mi5 which is great, but mini is becoming a bit annoying. How close to stock is this?
Imagine performance will be level or higher than my mi5 (mi5 I under clocked and has 3gb ram)

Thanks
