It's true, anyone who doesn't use a 1080p screen finds Word, Excel, the internet, anything at all unusable.

Plus the lecturers can tell if your screen isn't full HD, it's an automatic fail. If you don't believe me, there is not a single person who has a degree before they had 1080p screens on laptops :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously though, most laptops are 768 resolution and have been for years.

1080p is a nice bonus, not an essential deciding factor, it ranks way down the list of priorities for laptop needs such as processor, RAM, storage space, battery life, reliability, graphics.

Most people won't even check or know about the above let alone the extra resolution. It's a bit like curved or 3D TVs screen, nice to have but not really that important.

I know students will be starting university very soon so here's my input;

I bought a laptop that was pretty much identical in specs (and price to this). I stuck in a ssd which was only 120gb, but I'd recommend 240gb if you can. It did everything, and did everything well. I did graphic design at university, and it would out perform the university's brand new macs. In fact, the reason I bought the laptop was so that I could work in the studio at university because the macs were SO slow and you ran the risk of someone shutting down the mac if you left it unattended, and so lose your work. I know I could have sat at home and done all my university work on my desktop but it was so beneficial going into uni to get work done (I found I got a lot more done compared to staying at home!).

The laptop ran Photoshop, Illustrator, inDesign, all without an issue. It even ran 3ds Max well, and I rendered stuff in times which weren't to be sniffed at for a £220 laptop! People might try and persuade you to spend all your student loan on the latest Mac. Heck, they do look nice and you might be persuading yourself to go for it and treat yourself. But it doesn't mean you will do any better on your course if you spend £1500 more on a laptop. A lot of people I know were immediately in their overdrafts to pay for their macs, and some have left uni with huge overdrafts to pay off. I've left uni with 0 debt (minus student debt...) because a) I'm a tight ****, and b) by second year I was an unsociable nerd because I was too engrossed in my uni work. It meant I had £6k in savings when I left uni thanks to various jobs, and I needed it to cover the costs of traveling to job interviews, moving house to my new job, furnishing the house, car repairs etc. Try to get by at uni with what you can afford; then you can reward yourself once you land yourself with a job after uni

It was the bs emanating from your general direction. I mean you claim to own a an A10 8700p laptop with a dual graphics card that is integrated or something, and you claim I talk nonsense. FFS you even quote the DX but clearly didn't know what it meant. For future reference it means Dual graphics. So you have a laptop with a graphics card that you didn't know you had.

Of course you will threaten to ignore, you can't stand being told that you don't know what you are talking about. That probably explains why you don't know what you are talking about.
bonzobanana
1 Sep 16 #97
Why on earth did you reply with 'What's that smell?' are you mentally ill?

Reading the rest shows you are utterly clueless. Straight to my ignore list. It's beyond pathetic that you can't answer in a reasonably sane way to a technical point and I suspect others who have bought this laptop will surely show soon that its not dual graphics and was never expected to be and you were wrong.
Geokinkladze
1 Sep 16 #96
What's that smell?

Look you're waffling, just leave it. The reason your R6 runs better than the R7 you quoted is that your R6 is carrizo running at the top end of it's 35 watt limit and you are comparing against an R7 Kaverri which isn't (an R7 in an FX 7600p is a different beast from an R7 in an Fx 7500).

The R6 carrizo can vary from 12 to 35 watts, in an A10 it runs at 35 watts. The R7 Kaveri OTOH runs at 19 or 35 watts and in the FX 7500 it is capped at 19 watts.

So no the distinction between R6 and R7 isn't a load of rubbish. It can confuse people granted (you are an example of this) but with AMD it is important to know what integrated card you are getting, it's configuration as well as any possible added graphics cards.

M260 is not integrated. FYI the A10 8700p has an integrated R6 carrizo. You most likely have an M350 card in addition to this according to AMD (click notebook tab and find your R6 M345DX under a column headed "RADEON™ DUAL GRAPHICS BRAND". Hopefully that will tell you whether you have Dual graphics or not :smirk:

As a clue for anyone who stumbles across this convo if it has DX in the graphics description that is a clue that you have dual graphics.
bonzobanana

No I'm saying that AMD use the same configuration as discrete cards to also promote the integrated gpu's. So if an APU's gpu matches the configuration of the discrete card even though the APU gpu may be run slower and only have access to the main shared system memory they use the same code M260 etc.

The whole R6, R7 thing is a load of rubbish. The chipset in my A10 8700p laptop is R6 graphics and the chipset in the FX-7500 is R7 but mine has the same configuration, is run faster and has more features, higher Graphic Core Next functionality for improved Mantle performance. You can't make any comparison with R6 and R7 etc.

Anyway as previously stated a few benchmark results will surely sort this out as actual performance will reveal if there is secret sauce in the laptop. I might add though that this is not the first time I've seen this issue in a thread about AMD laptops. The way they promote the laptops is very confusing. I had an HP laptop (just sold it) and again it had information that made you think that there may have been dual graphics but there wasn't. On the HP site they mentioned dual graphics as a possible option but on the marketplace no one seemed to be selling that sku version. I assume dual graphics is normally picked up by utils like Speccy, CPU-Z etc as well.

Also I think when a PC or laptop has dual graphics they state 'Dual graphics' and often 'Radeon R***** + Radeon R*****' etc so you know there are two functioning gpu's.

My A10 8700p has a R6 M345DX gpu integrated as part of the APU but you search for R6 M345DX and you will find vendors claiming it has 2GB of dedicated memory but in fact it can use up to 2GB of system memory. Mine is permanently configured as only 512MB on my laptop.

Also if you click on the main link for this offer you see 4 laptops in a row the third one is based on the same chipset as mine. Do you think that is dual graphics?
Geokinkladze
1 Sep 16 #94
Ahhh so you don't understand the difference between an R7 M260 (which is a discrete card) and an onboard R7 (otherwise known as Kaveri). That explains your previous comments. The M260 is a discrete card. When added to an AMD APU system (with onboard R7) it works in crossfire with the Kaveri.

So no the APU doesn't have M260 as standard, it has either R6 Kaveri, R7 Kaveri, R6 Carrizo, R7 Carrizo etc as standard. If the system comes with an M260 then it is as an added card.

As I say, happy for someone who bought one to confirm otherwise but unless the add says that it specifically had an M260 inside I would just assume it is onboard graphics, which in this instance is R7 Kaveri.
bobthewibble
30 Aug 16 #86
No... it clearly states on the Lenovo Z50 tech specs that the FX processor is paired with the M260 graphics. This is an APU, by definition the graphics are 'integrated'. It's one of the major selling points of an APU. Your link to some obscure reseller's 3 line description isn't really helpful.

The APU has Radeon R7 M260 graphics as standard its just not run at such a high speed as an intel laptop with a Radeon M260 gpu. It's unlikely to have dual graphics but surely an easy test would be to check the bios for a dual graphics option or benchmark to see if there is improved performance using something like the unity heaven benchmark. I don't think the FX-7500 has dual graphics though. See what frame rate you get with standard settings at 1366x768 native resolution. Make sure your laptop is setup for performance and has a mains connection at the time.

No mention of dual graphics on Lenovo's site either.

30 Aug 16 #88
Yes it is an APU with integrated graphics. And it doesn't necessarily have an additional graphics card, such as the M260. Some models may have, and if the amazon page says so then I'd be happy to accept the claim. But Amazon stocks Z50's with M260 described under graphics (see this one) and it also stocks Z50's with "R7" described as the graphics (as the op is). In which case my money is on this being onboard R7 alone as opposed to having an additional M260. But hey, you tell people it's definite.

I guess using your reasoning this add is also wrong because it has R6 graphics which it describes as integrated. They just neglect to add that it also comes with an R6-M255DX have they? Because using your logic all Z50's with R6 graphics have the R6-M255DX right?

have you missed a full stop? if you meant to say 'No. 15" laptop ...' then this is simply not true. I managed to get a samsung np700z5b YEARS ago with i7 and 15.6" screen - VERY cheap and VERY capable .. weighs arnd 2.1-2.2 kgs

I upgraded it to SSD (was no need - I think it was just as fast with whatever HDD was in there), 12gb RAM (I run virtual machines) - and works wonderfully for my needs. Always itching to upgrade to a newer laptop, but hard to beat this for the 300 quid I got it for on ebay.

If your buying an AMD laptop the main reason to do so is gaming and that's if you basically are moving it from one mains socket to another and can't afford a decent intel laptop with discrete graphics.

I recently bought a A10 8700p laptop from Argos on ebay for £189.99. A pretty similar spec except one step down in model range but one generation later so similar performance overall I think. Some places mine is better and others the FX-7500 is better. The issue that prevents mine comfortably outperforming the FX-7500 is it seems to be limited to single channel memory although using various utils it seems that memory speed seems to vary by load so not sure.

However mine has R6 graphics and this one has R7 but mine appears to have the same configuration as this one and is run much faster 720mhz on mine but up to 800mhz on some other A10 8700p laptops depending on TDP. Mine is configured for 15 watts but the chip runs from 12 - 35W I think. This Lenovo is based on a 19W TDP.

Mine can actually outperform i7 laptops with integrated graphics if the game is bottlenecked by the gpu rather than the cpu but generally performs at the same level I guess as a i3 laptop with discrete graphics (NVidia or radeon). It does have a lot of multimedia extensions though like 4k hardware decoding etc not found on the intel chips. Intel integrated gpu's seem quite flaky. They are basic chips that run very fast and some parts of the gpu are emulated in software which gives them less consistent frame rates and can make game compatibility poor plus onscreen issues where as an AMD would more likely have flaky frame rates due to thermal overload throttling, weaker cpu performance or memory bandwidth issues but still have full compatibility. Just my experience.

There is more reason to believe that it is an AMD Radeon R7 (Kaveri) onboard graphics seeing as that is what the FX-7500 contains and the description doesn't specify any particular model of R7.

Item weight: 3.1KG, unless it means shipping weight. Average battery time is really bad for students as well considering it's 4 hours on paper it pretty much means 2 hours of real use which means that this is going to stay on cable 24/7, which means that battery will most likely die after 1 year. But then again you get what you pay for.

not voting hot or cold as I do not know the deal
but I can tell you that I would advise everyone to stay away from Lenovo. I was a massive fan of IBM laptops had hoped that Lenovo kept the same level of quality.

unfortunately not, I have had the misfortunte of owning four of their devices (2 tablets, 1 mob phone (Motorola), and a laptop) over the last three years. Not one of them worked properly and they had to go back to seller and I was lucky enough to get refunds on three; and they 'fixed' the fourth (tablet). Ruined my holiday two times as I needed the devices while away from home.

Obvious question - why buy 4 if the first 2 didn't work! Circumstances ...

From my own experience, laptops eventually run into problems that you always have to fix, until the next one pops up. A desktop will be more sturdy and last longer without as many problems. But it will take more space. But with more space the computer has more space to breath compared to a laptop, which stops it from overheating. If he plans to play games a desktop is definitely the best option for you.

Does this have an R7 260/260x? Surely at native resolution (768p) or output to a TV at 720p you could use this for some light gaming.

If you avoid GPU intensive effects like MSAA and use half-refresh rate v-sync for 30fps it will probably be acceptable (might even get 60fps on Rocket League with low/med settings). Of course if you specifically want to play games a PS4 or XBox would be much better for the price.

Good deal for around the £200 mark, especially since drop in value of GBP. Heat added.

I never said it was a refurb but Liston2 above mentions that no original box and only 3 month warranty. How did you manage 3 year warranty?
1lluminati
29 Aug 16 #19
anyway specs are good for the price. but I had one of these cheap Lenovos and build quality was horrible.

sent it back as the fan died within a week of having it.

FIFA 16 on high, 720p
BF4 on low-medium 720p
GTA V on low, 800x600
Mafia II on low, 720p
Skyrim on low, 720p (60fps)

Just off the top of my head

looks a nice spec machine however amazon are showing 2 different laptops, 1 having a full sized keyboard and the other not.
it is sold and full filled by Amazon so I would assume it has a 12 month warranty.

Looks like a great deal but I can't work out whether this is brand new or a refurb. Why only a 3 month warranty and not in the original box?

Thanks op - orderen one with 3 year warranty

The built in graphics are going to be a small step up from the built in Intel so don't expect even half the performance if your desktop gpu

Specs are good for the price. Replace the hard drive with a 250gb SSD (£60ish) and stick the spare in a caddy to store your media files.

This deal back once again. Bought this laptop a few times for in laws. Sound is great on it too, so no need for a sound bar like previous laptops.

oh only 4 hours. half that and it is 2. i half as batteries always die. my netbook has about 8 to start with on atom processor. maybe atom netbooks and a refurbished desktop steam streaming is the way to go.

cpu benchmark around 3300. vs 5500 for my i5. so around i3 performance. excellent for this price. anyone know how graphics would compare between this and say my desktop gtx750ti which plays everything great and my atom netbook or i3 dell xps 18 which both use some form of intel graphics hd.

Just looked at amazon page. while not sure it is for me just yet... this is a great deal for anyone looking. lots of memory. reasonable processor and graphics. well balanced. i have a dell xps 18 i3 and graphics let it down. this should be much better though i normally use cpu benchmark for processors and not sure whicj is best for comparing graphics
