Dont be silly, obviously it comes down to more than the taste when it comes to price, not an opinion, a fact. Older whisky has been stored longer and CURRENTLY there is a lack of older whisky hence it costs more. not a case of anything to do with me, its a problem that not enough was laid down before the 90s when single malt was not as popular and nobody predicted the boom, that is all, simple supply and demand. Now larger companies charge much more for older whisky and do manipulate prices and create non age statement nonsense but some relative bargains can be had if you know the age sweet spot on some less marketed quality whisky.

Putting ice in whisky is besides the point.

Now, I see that you attribute its cost/value not just to its taste... interesting. You attribute the extra value/cost to it being kept in storage for years and also how scarce it is from artificially created market powers.

You are a prime example of how sold in to this whisky marketing someone can be.

For a start you don't put ice in good whisky so no Not a troll but someone who actually drinks a bit of whisky. I read your comment. lets look at Glenfarclas, it does very little marketing and produces a quality product and a good price for its age without any nonsense. It is not just the simple difference between the aftertaste. It is how long it is stored, how much stock they have from that production period, how much is lost to angels share, current market demand etc... I appreciate buying an expensive bottle that 3 generations of staff have looked after and to me that has value. Its not marketing nonsense unless you get into non age statement which is a symptom of low stocks of older barrels.

I am looking to purchase a decent bottle of something as a gift, and this seems decent to me. However I know very little of whisky, if people can recommend something nicer than this around this price point, with good packaging, I would appreciate!

You don't know much about whisky if you think there is no difference. The very reason you buy it is for taste experience or we would all just be drinking cheap vodka, yes it is expensive but demand is outstripping supply (with malts) some of us prefer to drink less and enjoy the flavor and taste experience.

Regarding this deal i would go get a highland park 12 from Tesco for £25 pounds over this and save a £5. in fact i would go for almost any age statement Single Malt over this.

I think all this whisky for £30 is nonsense.

I've drunk many whiskys and can appreciate the single malts, bourbons, sickly sweet ones, "blends"... whatever however at the end of the day the differences between them all is just a bit of a different aftertaste. When you spend this much on this whisky you are buying in to the marketing/brand that is passed from person to person, father to son like a virus.

You imagine the nice shiny bottle and the crystal glass with some ice cubes, the clinking of the ice, the aged oak, the velvet box... it's all nonsense. At the end of the day you're buying in to the spell they cast over you whether you like it or not.

The fact is it is more or less gone-off fermented grain in a fancy bottle. Anything more is an illusion that you are paying for. If it was sold in a plastic milk tub would you pay £2 for it? Of course you wouldn't. Before you think this is a deal think again.

Asda have double-black on offer for £25 if anyone fancies it. Not sure it's nationwide, but I saw some in Long Eaton, Notts on Saturday. Might be useful for JW lovers here :smiley:

I have also had my fair share of whiskies and yes, of course some of it is marketing. But I can say I prefer a dram of macallan 15 yo to a dram of jw blue label, for example, so isn't it just a matter of taste? And personally, I pay a couple of quid more for a brand I know I enjoy, or a couple of quid less, if you want to look at it that way (macallan is cheaper than blue label, by a distance). Also makes present buying for me a simpler experience :smiley:
