Bought one last year at £250 but definately worth it, havent had a single issue with it, excellent little device and at this price even better.

Well worth it for me (had no timer on boiler). Paid 130 when Amazon were clearing the v1 model. British gas just installed v2 model anyway.

Got dual hive zone setup for 200 quid (bgas made a pricing error!) really happy with it although winter will be real test.

Had hive for a few years now, got it free when BG first started installing. Awesome system, and great customer service if anything goes wrong.

Personally I would go down the Nest route -
• Nest Thermostat (3rd gen buy off Nest 249 installed "No Quibble" works with 99% of boilers ours being installed Tuesday.
• Nest Protect - for fire and co alerts, have one will install another (2nd one) tomorrow.
• Also coming approx Oct Nov - Nest Outdoor cam approx £150 - can have no subscription but looks an excellent bit of kit

Any tips please? How to go about the installation. I consider myself pretty competent but when I installed it the water controls work fine, however the heating doesn't. When the Salus tries to turn the heating on, a fuse blows inside the honeywell box which every component connects into and the mains trips out :/

The Nest is never directly connected to the boiler its wireless to boiler- no cable - cable purely for power for thermostat.
Meant to mention the Nest holder - very overpriced known as the 'Nest stand' but IMHO a 'must have'.
what you want I think is possible but it would envolve the cable channeling into the wall to be hidden.
Much better IMHO is have on the stand and then can move to different rooms. - more flexible.
But to anwers your question I'm 99.99% what you want is possible. Nest CC Ireland lovely knowledgable people will give you the answer and any other queries - 0808 169 2307

the other benefit is maybe holding back installing in wall is you can find the perfect location by pluging it in to different rooms not too close to radiators etc before deciding.

I swear the other bloke works for Nest, doing some plugging for their stuff and their latest outdoor cam is a disaster, two years to come up with that!?

Also, you can save yourself money buying it by looking elsewhere other than the Nest website...

The Nest comes in two parts, the heatlink and the actual thermostat.

The heatlink is installed in the same room, cupboard or anywhere near your boiler, this is directly connected to the boiler.

The thermostat is wireless, probably like the one you're replacing it with and it will connect to the heatlink from anywhere in your house. It can be powered from your wall wiring for a flush finish or you can power it from the mains it suitable. It's advised to be installed somewhere where there is regular house traffic, I.E the hallway or living room so it can monitor for absence and adjust accordingly. If you have multi zones then there's further reading but you can link an additional Nest and control the two.

I'm by no means an expect and don't even own a smart thermostat but have been doing some research before taking the plunge.

As for the Hive, I'm pretty sure they advise against removing it once installed so moving house could be a no go?

My existing thermostat is fully wireless ie runs on batteries. I don't mind channelling a cable for a nest, but what to channel to? To a socket?From what I can see, I'd have to use that stupid USB cable and I'd still have a physical plug that you can't hide. Or am I missing something?

Just ordered the Hive anyway but I can always return if I can find a way to hide the Nest wiring.

I downloaded the manual of my boiler which included an electrical diagram of the circuit board, I had to simply disconnect the two wires leading from the timer to the board and replace with the two wires of the salus receiver. Hope this helps.

Your other option is to get in touch with technical support from your boiler and/or thermostat manufacturer.

FYI - I don't work for Nest or have anything to do with the company.
Also anyone with any sense (who decide on Nest) will buy from Nest directly and have the Nest approved installers fit the device so they are covered - for 50 pounds

3rd Gen Nest does allow you to control the hot water.
Nest have approved installers at cost of £50 with guarantee it will be right.

If you have any queries regarding Nest I would ring 0808 169 2307, the £50 install fee is worth every penny (unless you are a qualified heating engineer and spark).

The only thing that puts me off this is the lack of geofencing. I've been swaying towards the tado but needing control of my hot water too means it's quite a lot more to buy.

All I can think of is that the switch line, (NO contact) must actually be a neutral or earth, so that when there is a demand for heat and the relay inside the device operates the short occurs. Check that the switch line has not been mixed up with the earth or neutral, the potential across NO and LIVE contacts, should NOT be at 240 v ac.
If you are still unsure, get an electrician to check it.

The Tado at £199 is the same price as the 3rd Gen Nest also Nest is less likely to go bust on you - which would render the app useless.

It turns lights on and off too great while your away don't have to have it coming on same time every day

Highly recommended, got one in the last screwfix deal.
