I have a 128Gb and it's HORRIBLY slow especially when transferring a directory/folder with thousands of small files when it literally grinds to a halt.

My crashed so badly it would not even recognise media on the drive. Grixx didnt want to know.

Hmmm... quite important to know if your findings are for the new one or the old one!

One purchase a year ago, another 3 weeks ago. Not sure which was the stick under test, think it was the newer one.

I've had 2 of the 64Gb and one of the 128Gb fail inside a year, one of them a replacement that failed within 6 months.
Won't be using them again.

Purely observational: the "relatively recent" items are described by vendor as having greater transfer speeds but with significantly less warranty than earlier descriptions.

Speed test results as promised. Write speeds varied between 87 MB/s to 104 MB/s . Told you it was fast.
Tests were from Linux, using dd and cp, with appropriate options to turn off the effect of the Linux buffer cache.
Doing backups to his thing I typically get a throughput of 51 MB/s. That is slower because it includes decrypting data and re-encrypting it to another format, reading many thousands of small files, and so on.
Other good points: drive is metal, does not hot, and is slim enough to not physically block other USB ports
Downside: possible long term reliability?

If it doesn't get hot during use then I would be much more optimistic about its reliability/longevity.
BTW did you purchase recently or some time ago?

These are much faster than the tiny nub type sticks from Sandisk and Samsung. Not just sequential read and write which those little drives are actually respectable for. But it's random access though not exactly an SSD is quick. Doing backups of lots of small files, running an OS or VM off it's much better than those tiny sticks.
Which one is correct and is it faster than the tiny SanDisk and Samsung sticks?

If memory serves, I think the 64GB ones are OK while the 128GB ones are a bit flaky.

Poor reliability. I had one fail whilst under warranty. Its replacement failed within 6 months

Yeah, have one too from last July (64Gb version). It gets a little warm, but don't really stress it for long periods, which some people here seem to be doing perhaps? And yes, fastest drive I've ever owned so far.

These are a bit hit and miss which is a shame as they are decently built, sturdy and aluminium.
I had one that one day asked me to do a scandisk so I did and it just froze after a while, so pulled it out and tried again to scandisk and froze again only this time when I put it back in it found a new device. I found out this was because the internal firmware had got corrupt and tried lots of innostor tools but none worked.
So I bought another one and this only had a 70MB write speed (like their older USB 3 stock had) so got a replacement, it was also 70MB write (the first one I had that went wrong was 120 or 130MB writes) but I just kept it. After a while I noticed it wouldn't work in USB 3 ports sometimes, but pretty much always works in USB 2 ports. So now I mostly have it in USB 2 ports.
I have no idea why its so temperamental in USB 3 ports, it's definitely USB 3 as when it does work in the USB 3 ports it writes at 70MB a sec and was fine for first few weeks. I keep it regularly backed up for when it does decide to pack up altogether! I have tried it in multiple machines with USB 3 ports but its the same.

I have two of these. Both have failed - the older one lasted a couple of years. The new one - which was a replacement for another defective one, by the way - has also stopped working.
I ended up fronting up a lot more money for a much better drive. £45 for a Lexar P20, where I'm seeing 258MB/s writes (!). And I bought it from Amazon, so unlike the Grixxes, I am likely to get decent customer service should anything go wrong.

I used to have one from about 2014, also never got hot to touch. It was a fast high quality device, lacked the elegance of the smaller drives you can get from Samsung and Sandisk but it was considerably faster at writes and random activity and didn't get hot like they do.

I'm sure I have read that the higher end ones (eg Samsung) tend not to get too hot.

As i said it depends on the link.. Some don't put enough bandwidth on the usb 3.0 ports. I don't know what usb chipsets are being used .. usb 3.1 has for instance 10GBits/s bandwidth, if the chipset only has say 15gbits/s total bandwidth back to the cpu then its throttled.

Sounds like yours is faulty then.... I've had 20+ USB pen drives/SD cards (including 2xGrixx) in the last few years from 7dayshop and all of them have read and write speeds equal or better than 7dayshops claims.

Great read/write specs, but the heat is a major concern - no wonder they have a high failure rate.

Heat on fast 100+ mbytes/s usb devices are an issue (scandisk ultra fit is a good example!)

Depends on your USB 3 port and its link back speed (some are crippled) ps 30-40mbytes/s would indicate usb2 speeds

Will post my usual note of caution about speeds and warranty quoted by 7DS: about Nov 2015, 7DS reduced the 5 years warranty on its Grixx items to 2 years which appeared to be conincident with an increase in users reporting failures (inc reports from HUKD users). But not all 7DS outlets have downgraded the Grixx warranty from 5 to 2 years, 7DS Amazon outlet still quotes 5 years for a 128GB USB3 item with randomly lesser specs, but will charge an additional £8 for the benefit https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00EXMHK7C
Also note Aria previously sold the same part number for the 128GB USB3 item currently quoted by 7DS but Aria quote lesser specs and full 5 years waranty at https://www.aria.co.uk/Products?search=60460

I've had one of these for the best part of a year now I use it most weeks and it's been super reliable. USB 3.0 speeds are pretty decent but USB 2.0 are brilliant for older devices it usually gets a solid 17mb/sec.
Only thing to note is they get super super hot but I usually use it in my nVidia shield tv so there is plenty of air around it.

^This.
Mine get so hot and the USB Slot I use is pretty rigid, so most of the times I pull it out and the metal case comes off (leaving a USB port and some circuit board).
So im regularly super glueing it.

I have been using these for backups long time, recently bought another at this price from 7dayshop. Was going to post deal but bottled out. A properly fast USB stick. Write speed is very high - I get over 70 MB/s IIRC, will confirm later on when I am at home.
Just a word of warning, one stopped working after about a year. Electrically dead. Still using them though.
