wait until the coals are 'white hot ' before cooking anything or you get the carcinogenic coal fumes

Paper creates a ton of ash, and if it's a bit windy then it gets all over your food. I find putting a little bit of vegetable oil into a squirty bottle to spray on the coals works wonders and catches fire immediately without chemicals. Use olive oil if you're feeling a bit flush and want it to smell even better.

Brilliant piece of kit, makes barbecuing so much more easier and charcoal is evenly hot. Only downside is that it produces loads of smoke for a few minutes when first lit. Got mine from tesco 2 years ago for £2.50 each.

I would say that these chimney starter kits are ideal if you want to get a feel for chimneys and see if they are your thing before committing hard earned cash to a full on chimney for your roof.

Get the Weber one. It cost much more but holds more coals and is just better made.

Got one last month, so much better than the cheaper alternative but Weber do good products anyway.

You can just as easily use newspaper instead of firefighters

Yep, one great thing about these is that you don't need to use the toxic chemical starters! A sheet or two of paper has always worked for me.

At least the firefighters will come in handy if it goes pear shaped!

These work really well.
I was lucky enough to buy one from Homebase last September for only 49p when they were doing the final end of summer reductions so it may be worth keeping a look out.
But even at £4.93 it's a hot price.
