I like some Halfords bikes like Voodoo or Boardman, but it's never worth spending £200 on a brand new bike. I would recommend searching ebay for bikes near you. Loads of people buy bikes, hardly use them and then stick them on ebay when they are clearing out and it's quite easy to spot a good one. You can buy a Saracen Mantra for £150-250 which is £450 bike with hydraulic disc brakes.
Some things are worth saving money on, but when it comes to new bikes it's a minefield under £300. There is so much junk out there that is not built to last so it's a false economy.
I would say the "value" of this Carrera is about £120 new. The fork is absolute junk (same for any cheap bike) and you'd be FAR better off with a rigid fork instead of this thing.
There are so many to choose from, you just have to search for nearest first and maybe wait a week for one to pop up down the road from you.

I reckon 90%+ of people who ride bikes with suspension would be far better off without. Unless you're doing some serious off road/downhill stuff it's just added weight and more to go wrong.

Maybe but some towns really do have awful roads so it makes a big difference plus having some extra bike weight can help at times in bad weather.
No bikes at all in my area on ebay and the search is rubbish put in my postcode and it still gives results for places the other side of country I am in Duston not Wales ebay.

This is a good price if you just want to test the waters, but you will be replacing it in a years time if that. I would at least for for disc breaks though makes a big difference i think!

Good spot! I looked at other Halfords pics and they're all like that. My guess is the bikes are hung upside down against a white wall using hooks through the wheels. It's probably easier to digitally erase the background that way.

I disagree that a £200 bike is dangerous offroad, I have a 2007 Kona Lanai that I bought from Rutland cycles for £220. I have done London to Brighton 5 times on it and ridden hundreds of miles of trails and towpaths. Apart from a service every 2 years and a recent new bottom bracket it has never missed a beat. I wouldn't use it for downhilling or a bike park but for general trails and riding to work it is superb. I wouldn't buy a bike from Halfords and the bike in this deal is not a mountain bike, but you don't need to spend £500 to get enjoyment from cycling.

My kids have grown up on ridgeback MX16 , MX20, MX24 kids bikes - an absolute dream to work on very light and easy to ride - you can get a great deal on them on Ebay.

That chain at the bottom looks like its curved slightly upwards. I can understand straight or sagging down but makes me think the bike image is taken upside down perhaps to show the maximum travel of the forks unless its some sort of camera issue or optical illusion.

this bike will be horrible.spend more go on pauls cycles get a discounted previous years model.look for shimano deore level and rockshox fork you need to be looking at 4 to 5 hundred discounted bike for a decent mountain bike.and under 13kg hardtail.with a frame that can be upgraded as parts wear out.200 pound mountain bikes are bad investments and the kit on them is such poor quality it's won't work right or last long and could end up been dangerous if you go offroad

sadly that's the code added automatically by HUKD. You will find similar codes on most deals.

YES! Islabike or Frog bike. I would not bother with anything else. Yes there are cheaper bikes but they are much heavier and don't have any resale value. You can buy an Islabike or Frog bike, use it for 2-3 years (maintain it of course) and then sell it for £50 less than what you paid.
