Cracking lens.

The new efs 10-18mm STM is a better lens. I've owned this older 10-22 and updated to the new 10-18. 4 stop IS provides more versatility and allows longer exposures while hand holding the camera. The images taken on the newer model are also sharper and this is confirmed with many reviews of it. The 10-22 is really getting on these days. The only thing the 10-22 has over the 10-18 is build quality but this means it heavier and bulkier.
The 10-18 can be had for 179.99 from John Lewis with and extra 20 quid back from canon making it a very reasonable 159.99... Half the price of the 10-22mm

I also bought the 10-18 a couple of weeks ago after reading many reviews, and comparisons, between 10-18 and the 10-22, I am loving it, I paid £179 at Currys, with £20 cash back claimed directly from Canon.

​I know what you mean but most people's standard kit lens covers the missing range. When you want a super WA lens you want a super wide angle lens. All in all the 10-18 takes better photos. Is cheaper and has IS. I'm glad I made the change. My 10-22 cost me over 500 quid 9 years ago.

The newer 10-18 STM has better reviews and covers 16-29 mm, seems like a no brainer, esp at half the cost.

10-18 STM is optically the better lens. However, the plastic mount puts some people off. I used one with an adaptor on my EOS M, until I bought the EF-M 11-22. It is a great lens, but so is the 11-22 EF-M, an ideal optic for the EOS M (now replaced with an M3). It all depends how much you use your camera. If you are changing lenses day in / day out, then maybe mount wear could be a concern. However, I would imagine that most folks using an EF-S lens would not be doing enough lens changes for it to be an issue.

​The addition of IS on the new model gives you 4 stops more. So will allow longer shutter speeds to compensate the aperture difference. The 10-22 doesn't have IS. Optically the newer lens is better and is sharper. For what you intend to do you should be using a tripod so the IS won't necessarily benefit you but the image quality will be more evident with the newer lens. It's the sharpest lens I own. The only plus I see for the older 10-22 and has already been mentioned is the metal mount. Unless you are a pro tog who's interchanging lens every day you won't have a problem with the plastic mount. The new lens is far lighter.
