I'm not a camera snob, im fully aware that a lot of people dont want an overcomplicated camera and just want something a bit better than their phone, and that's absolutely fine. I just don't like brands shoving point & shoot internals into arbitrarily large bodies just to make them look more pro to beginners without any tangible benefits beyond ergonomics. I literally ran into this problem last month when a member of family wanted to buy his girlfriend a camera to get better quality shots for her makeup business. He ended up dropping over £300 on a bridge which was solely differentiated from a £100 P&s by its 50x zoom, but he chose it because of the way it was marketed by Canon and because it looked like my old SLR. I'm not saying people should only buy expensive cameras, I'm saying people shouldn't buy what is essentially a bog standard compact with a jacked up price tag simply because it looks like your cousin Harry's cool DSLR.

I'm a massive Canon fan.....but this is not one of their better efforts
For a camera which is relatively new camera....first released only 8 months ago....the fact that it is being so heavily discounted should tell you a great deal....
It really is basically a compact with a long zoom lens (and a slow one at that....f3.5 - f6.6)
It lacks most of the SLR features that Bridge camera users should be expecting.....there is no option to add an external flash to boost the poor built in one's range.....the deal breaker will any bridge camera for me would have to be the lack of a viewfinder....making using in bright light difficult & the lcd screen on this one is not articulated & at 230dpi is very low resolution...
Not offering 1080p video on a 2016 model is also truly unforgivable

The rrp is a tad insane, but for £130 this is a decent camera. 42x optical zoom has to be useful and generally favourable reviews too. It's one the kids could use to take a few pics without having to worry the whole time! :smiley:

Camera snobs. This isn't the bridge I would choose but the vast majority of people that want decent cameras aren't ones that wish to have full bodied SLRs, pay the price for them or lug all the crap about you need to get varied shots.

IMO - Not really, and I think it's telling that you mention a "Travel Compact" as a "Bridge Camera".
The segment is dead and has been replaced by "Travel Compacts". There are no new models and heavy discounting.

Unfortunately yes. Point & shoot internals in a SLR-shape body are a great way to bump the price up and sucker in people who don't know much about cameras.
(That obviously doesn't apply to "true" bridge cameras like the RX10 series, FZ1000 etc)
