Blackberry Priv with dedicated keyboard using Android.

Sim Free so unlocked to all networks.

Blackberry is not every ones cup of tea, but this price is lower for a new handset, than some second hand prices on eBay.

I paid £600 across the term of the contract for this a couple of months ago. Had been waiting on a price drop and it seemed to not be coming. GRRRRR. I had a perfectly good Huawei P8 and just got bored of waiting for them to drop the price. However, I got a contract deal with some pretty meaty allowances but I'd still have preferred to get it SIM free.

Pros

- Good OS experience, having used several Nexus devices it's nice to see a close to stock experience from someone else
- Lovely screen, FHD phones before it feel very old fashioned and I love the OLED as never had a phone with this sort of screen.
- Keyboard is great, I love the real tactile feedback of being able to type a message and not look at the screen, bashing a touch screen just doesn't work for me. Plus it makes posting to HUKD or Reddit very easy as you can power through posts.
- The touchscreen keyboard is like no other even swype and so on are put to shame by how accurate it is.
- Fast, it doesn't feel slow at any time, it's got plenty of RAM so applications load quickly if recently used and you can have many on the go before they purge out of RAM.
- Unique, other than my partner who also has a Priv I've never seen another bar a plastic fantastic non functioning demo model in a CPW store. It's a nice talking point when you flick the keyboard open and people look at you funny thinking it's a traditional candy bar phone.
- OS updates, in the couple of months I've had the phone It's had 4 updates, 1 of which was 6.0 Marshmallow.

Cons

- BB features feel like an afterthought when you've seen how slick they work in BB OS. Not awful, just slow to respond. I turned them off on mine in the end
- Overheating, not a major issue generally, however it happens quite a bit if you play games for anything more than 10 minutes.
- Back of the phone gets hot, not necessarily an issue but it's not pleasant in the current hot weather.
- Battery life can be hit and miss if you use the phone intensively. Some days it lasts and lasts, then do the same thing the next day and it manages half the usage.
- No wireless charging in the UK. But the Americans get this feature and the phone for quite significantly better prices.

I hope they release another full keyboard phone in the next couple of years so that I have a worthy replacement. So overall I would say I'm happy.

Statement still stands it was a good deal, continues to be also. Blackberry however are no longer making smart phone directly and will be handled via 3rd Parties which is a shame as I was looking forward to a Priv 2 or something similar!

Is there any idea on how long it will be at this price
Astec123 to recruiterinni
3 Sep 16 1 #43
If the NA variant of this deal is anything to go by then a couple of weeks before it rolls back up to full price. However, that's an educated guess and only BB/CPW will know the answer. If you really want to know then it might be best to call CPW to find out.

I'm well aware as I've been enjoying the updates on my Priv :stuck_out_tongue: I was referring to BB OS in relation to aLV426 and their comment.

29 Aug 16 #38
Didnt realise you were talking about BBOS.

On the android priv they are putting out monthly updates as well like the quadrooter vulnerability that hit the headlines recently
Astec123
29 Aug 16 #37
This is true but, BB OS pushing security updates is one thing to please an IT head, it doesn't make a handset user happy when they can't join in with the latest app that iOS or AOSP users are enjoying. Features that an end user isn't aware of don't sell phones, but being able to load the current favourite chat application, or silly photo editing app are things that users are interested in. This is what killed BB OS.
trott3r
29 Aug 16 #36
They are certainly pushing out a lot of security updates (monthly) so their focus is still is on security.
Astec123
29 Aug 16 #35
Sadly BB was their own cause of their own demise. When Android came to the market and innovated, pushing for a broader range of apps, ways to interact with phones and so on. BB stood by saying 'we can't do that as it will make the BB OS less secure'. BB spent their entire time coming up with reasons they couldn't keep up with iOS and features it offered because 'security', 'users don't want this' and so forth. What they should have been doing is saying this feature from a competing OS is coming to BB OS soon and making promises to push the OS forward, instead they just left it stagnate.

It's a shame because they are one of those manufacturers who at one point had a lot of respect from the buying public as well as buying teams in large corporations. It's a shame they squandered it. However, it would be nice to see BB take Android and push the boundaries of what can be done with it. There's a rumour they may fork it too which would be interesting to see.
aLV426
29 Aug 16 1 #34
Fair comments, I guess the advantage of BB OS has been lost (Which is a pity as I'm a BES admin!). My Q10 had a camera problem - which according to the support team is a known software issue! My 9720 types on it's own and has rung the emergency services on it's own when sitting on my desk! These errors aren't unique either!
Astec123

People say this all the time, but then I get a landline telephone and fibre broadband for less than £30 per month (I could probably do even better if I put some effort in). Many Americans pay about 3 times as much for 1/10th of the service. The same happens with mobile contracts. $50 a month to have a Priv for 2 years + $100 upfront? At the same time, the same deal here was £31 per month with better allowances and £10 upfront. After currency conversion we still get a better deal.

However, I would say compared to BB phones of old, the Priv is quite nice because of it having Android. I'll certainly consider another. However, I wont consider BB OS powered phones.

Heat for posting the deal. Personally I'd not do BB again (I have had quite a selection too!)

Have some heat , took the plunge in december with a contract costing circa 700.
I dropped mine last month and cracked the screen ,due to it being a curved screen the whole phone was deemed a write off and a new one was sent out from insures.
On my old one i was using the google now launcher ,with this one ive left it stock and actually use the keyboard now.

Brilliant phone

Got my priv a few weeks ago again like others above I waited for about a year before i finally gave up and bought a refurb from amazon marketplace for £400. :disappointed:

It also has interesting feature on the keyboard which acts like a trackpad.
ie i can scroll around by running my finger along the pkb.
No finger prints on screen now

Supports qualcom quickcharge v2 as well.

I have to say I did love unboxing this phone and testing It for the first time when It came In at the beginning of the year. I like the sliding mechanism It feels well made and sturdy and I quite liked the keyboard feature being hidden away. Screen was very nice but theres a bit of flex in the rear of the phone which put me off a little.

I decided to wait for a price drop on it but It never came unfortunately and now I've ended up going for a Note 7 on contract as I got a good deal. Anyways have some Heat OP.

fantastic phone with brilliant software very close to stock android, in fact slightly better because of BB features. Did not have much use for the keyboard but might be useful for some. It's the only reason I got rid of it because of the thickness due to the physical keyboard. I hope they had made one without keyboard I definitely would have kept it.
£399.99 is a very good price for this phone I think it should have been retailing at that from the beginning might have done really well.

Ooh I own one of those! Paid about £415 for it at the start of the year second hand. Initially it had some fairly major software problems but then android 6.0 came along and I haven't found a problem since. Does get hot while under load but so do all the SD810 or 808 based devices.
