Fire tabs come with ads that you can't switch off. Also, be aware that the Amazon Store (it doesn't have the Google Play Store) is kinda useless for kids as you can't turn on passwords for in-app purchases. Only get if you intend to root.

You can set up Parental Controls to add security for in-app purchases on the tablet according to amazon website

I notice when Im out and about the number of phones with cracked screens. Loads all the time. My brother replaced his Sony aqua phone screen at a local shop for £80 only to smash it 3 days later! What are folks doing with there phones and tablets to break the screens all the time. Accidents happen but really.. So many all the time. Butter fingers

the screen breaks so easily...and amazon has no replacement service...DONT BUY!

Nicely made tablet for the money but very restrictive unless your signed up for all things Amazon. While you can add playstore & disable the ads if you've got the time & know how - you might be better off with a cheap android tablet such as the Lenovo from Argos.

Its not intrusive, only really notice that the lock screen is an advert.

You don't have to pay its just a ploy so you don't ask for it to be removed, they remove it for free. We got 8mb and after adding the kids restricting software it really has no space on it at all, the kids don't understand and queue loads of games thinking that they will work and then you have to go through them all stopping the queue download. Only can be used for streaming. Go for the bigger memory

I have one for the kids to play games on, and they love it - depends what you do with it I guess, but no noticeable lag on ours

Google is your friend on this one. It's not a quick one liner so best to find some tutorials online. Probably some walkthroughs on YouTube as well.

In this price range it would be hard to beat.
Great for Amazon video etc. Can easily load Google Play Store on it and you've practically got an Android device. I put play store on and very happy with it. Put my BT Sport app, Mobdro & Kodi on as well.
Supports Micro Sd card to provide plenty storage. I've got a 128GB card in it but think supports up to 200gb.
I had this 8gb version but also got a 16gb one which gives you that wee bit extra flexibility re-storage

I guess this is the same one as amazon is selling, not an older tablet? I'm looking to get one and a fire stick. Was going to order off amazon but tesco seems a good price. Heat

Very very slow. I bought one for only 34.99 from Argos. Gave it away as Christmas gift. Much better to buy unbranded Chinese Android tablets on eBay with much better specs.

On the tablet you can watch youtube by using the browser like you do on a pc, but you need to load the playstore on the fire tablet to get Google apps like youtube. I'm hoping all the kids games we want will be in the Amazon app store. I don't want to mess about loading google's appstore, although that's is my backup plan, at which point I'll regret buying it.

Can i put the YouTube app on this? I've got it on the Amazon Fire TV box and assume you can get it on this but can't seem to find a definite answer.

I wish it was that easy, but unfortunately this is only an Android derived tablet. Installing the Google Play Store is tricky and not entirely successful, and without it you have to live with the much more meager selection of apps in the Amazon store. Some of the Fire OS is nice, like the browser, but other areas are quite confusing or limiting. Plus the hardware of this tablet is very cheap.
So for the price it is ok, but do not expect a smooth Android experience, because that is not what it is about.

Bought one of these a while back, truly awful and frustrating to use, was like going back to my old iPhone 3G.
It is so laggy and slow, which would be fine if you didn't have to go through the hassle of rooting it just to get rid of the Amazon bloatware. The screen resolution is terrible for text. Pay a bit more and get a faster chipset and a better display.
The deal is hot however.

Reason is that it is an IPS panel, not to do with brightness, with no lamination like an iPHONE, only way to workaround is to wear polorarising sunglasses in bright direct sunlight.

My friend has one of these.
I got a Samsung tab s 8.4
After the battery has gotten faulty on my device. I've really grown to like her kindle.
It's cheap. Has a rubber feel that is grippy. Doesn't feel like it could break super easily. Screen is acceptable for kodi.
It'll probably be my next tablet when it's a little cheaper. Mainly as a media platform compared to gaming (not tested gaming myself, the amazon app store is pretty lacking and as not my tablet I've not side loaded much onto it in my testing).

You are best buying the 16gb version is you plan to use BBC i player or Sky go for downloads.
Both these apps will only save video files to the device memory regardless if you have an additional memory card installed or not.
I found the 8gb version only had just over 5gb of spare memory whereas the 16gb I have now has just over 12gb free which is far more useful.

Are these any good? What's the screen like for viewing outdoors, in sunlight?
Depends what you want. It comes preloaded with amazon ware but underneath it's just a andriod tablet. It's perfectly fine for general use. Games for kids. Browsing net. Catch up TV. Email and so on. I want it for amazon prime services and a kids gameing tablet. Others want to do other things like photo/video editing which a bigger screen would be better.. Maybe... Also a better tablet would be faster, but for that average user this is a bargain. That's my understanding. Oh.. amazon put adverts on this tablet but pay £10 and that will be removed .

Good deal. Just been to currys and got them to price match the deal, and they matched a SanDisk ultra 16gb micro sd card aswell £6.99 (currys) to £5 (tesco)...reason i went to currys is i get an 8% discount on e gift cards, so i ordered those instantly and paid with those at the till for a further 8% off the total order...£40.48 for the fire and 16gb card. Good deal either way. £39 for a fire is a bargain, and its ideal for kids.

The reason I ask is that my iPad mini 2 is shockingly bad in sunlight. Even on max brightness. Doubt this will be any better if they're all the same.
