You do realise that routers can do far more than just shift internet data to your computer?! (Think: file transfers over a home network)

Nice and cheap but not very good spec. Only a single spatial stream.

I don't know, but if you've been with Talk Talk that long.... I'd ask them for a new modem, and get the wifi that way.

The talktalk youview box usb socket cannot be used for anything apart from maybe charging a phone, it is literally there for no reason, I checked. You should use powerline adapters to get a wired Ethernet connection to where the box is.
The talktalk youview box is so mind numbly slow to navigate and has such a poor picture quality I only use it for catch up, not watching live TV.

The cheapskates! Fancy not providing WiFi. As far as I know, you would need something with the ability to talk to the dongle. A PC would of course do this, but I wouldn't expect a mere modem to do this. However I've been surprised by TalkTalk's cost-cutting stinginess already tonight. Hopefully someone else can provide an answer.

Can anyone comment on how good this is?
I'm wondering of this will make a real difference to my laptop that doesn't has 5Ghz, in terms of file transfer speeds to my network, now I have a 5Ghz router.

Do you have any devices that work with 5Ghz band already? Smartphones? Might be worth running a speed test on both bands. On our network, our 5Ghz band is pretty empty and so gets higher speeds than the 2.4

I'm embarassed to say I have no experience of dongles and I feel like a complete numpty asking this but will this work in a sony smart tv?
The Sony dongles cost a quite abit more than I really wanna spend...

You'll probably find you're better off getting a FireTV stick or similar. The problem with smart TV's is that the app support tends to become deprecated...leaving you with a hobbled smart TV.

Thanks...It's for my mums tv, I've already bought her a firestick but I see your point about smart tv app support, cheers.
Not a bad idea but if this item is poor it won't necessarily replicate the speed that my smartphone can do on the 5Ghz network. This app looks interesting in terms of doing a LAN file transfer test on android:
Hopefully someone on here can report in if they get one if their LAN file transfer speeds are improved.
Currently on my laptop in my bedroom I can get 5 to 6 MB/s transfer speeds on a large file - be nice to get this 3 or 4 times faster.
