Raspberry Pi Zero is a super-small, hackable, and ultra-low-cost computer.

Unbelievably the super-small and super-affordable Raspberry Pi just got even smaller and even cheaper! Pi Zero is the heart of a Raspberry Pi on a tiny 65mm x 30mm board.

With mini-HDMI, micro-B OTG USB, and the same 40-pin GPIO it still has great connectivity although you'll probably want our adaptor kit to help you hook it up to your existing devices.

Pi Zero Features:

BCM 2835 SOC @ 1GHz

1GHz

512MB of RAM

micro-SD

mini-HDMI

micro-B USB for data

micro-B USB for power

Unpopulated 40-pin GPIO connector

Compatible with existing HAT addons

Dimensions: 65mm x 30mm x 5mm

I got one last year and i was the same - it sat in a box for about 6 months

I think i'm just going to go for the easy option and get RetroPie installed on it for some retro games emulation on my TV.

I did get LibreElec, which is a stripped back port of OpenElec, running on it the other night which worked pretty well.

They sell stereo audio out which you solder to your PhatDac (I'll give links below), then you have an output to go in your amp, stick some QSB audio speakers (£15 from Amazon, thanks to RustySpoons who originally mentioned them to me) and you have a cheap Sonos style unit for less than £50

Kodi works as a standard media player. For streaming content via free addons, it's pretty much a piece of crap and that's down to the addons. Also most people have bloated install, with Kodi you should get the standard program and only install the addons you need. For free live streaming of TV channels it's crap, Mobdro is way better. For free streaming of films and music then it's only worthwhile with a paid for subscription. I use Plex and Mobdro for a reason, they work, Kodi is for n00bs and all of them got ripped off if they bought a prebuilt system from someone else. Kodi has the reliability of a drug addict for a partner.

If there's a PC/lappie available, you might also want to have a look at NodeMCU modules which are based around an ESP8266 module with built in Wifi, and are very easy to network. Try googling 'NodeMCU home automation' or 'ESP8266 home automation.'

It comes in a few forms, the most compact being the 'WeMOS D1 Mini', which has a few inexpensive shields available as well:

https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/D1-mini-Mini-NodeMcu-4M-bytes-Lua-WIFI-Internet-of-Things-development-board-based-ESP8266/1331105_32529101036.html
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/group/D1-mini-Shields/1331105_260510439.html

Many more sellers on Ali and Ebay, some with cheaper prices, plus a few UK based sellers on Ebay, eg:

I'm not a great programmer but should be able to create something in Python.

My question is more related to what connections I will need. I'll need a keyboard and mouse, memory card, bluetooth dongle, HDMI lead and power supply - is that it?

I don't want to order these and realise I need something else.
fishmaster to GlentoranMark
28 Aug 16 1 #32
I found those links I gave you in a couple of minutes, your next port of call with regard to your research should be on more specialised forums dedicated to Rasp Pi projects.

Also think about whose creating the project, if it's you then getting everyone else to do the work for you means you didn't create the project, you just outsourced the work to others. It's not a criticism, it's just reality. When I create a project, I get bits of information from others but ultimately I create the project and work it all out. The fun in creating a project and realising it, is that you do most of the work effectively. If you want a poker timer and don't want to create it yourself just buy one off the shelf, it'll save you a lot of time.

It's about decisions and what outcome you want.

1. Anyone can get a kit made up by others and put it together
2. Anyone can get others to do the work for them
3. Not so many people can design and build a project themselves

I'm not making a direct criticism as I said, just how I think about projects myself. I've created stuff before the Internet existed without the help of Google. We have Google people! Think about how amazing that is, but the major disadvantage is that many people don't learn skills they just look up Google, why learn anything when Google knows it all. I think Google has taken the fun out of a lot of things now, I used to look at guitarists/musicians etc and think wow amazing, then you go on Youtube and everyone can do it. People overall are getting better at things that used to be difficult because the dissemination of information is so abundant and therefore easily obtainable. Just about anyone can be excellent these days.

Yes I have. Mine has the following features; (1) in order to go through the VPN just change the gateway on your client device to that of the RPiZero. (2) ensures DNS records don't 'leak' (3) built in internet kill switch: if the VPN goes down, then client devices will have absolutely no internet access.

I've not seen any of the tutorials as I'm 'fluent' in linux, so already knew how to do it. If you need any assistance just give me a shout and I'll try and identify where you're going wrong. PM is probably best

Thank you really appreciate the help. It's been a few months since I last tried to set it up so will give it another go.
If I remember correctly I managed to get everything on the rpi completed ok but just could not get the OpenVPN app on my phone or my laptop to connect. The app on the phone I think said something about a parsing error. I googled it and managed to find someone else with the same issue but no resolution.
I'll give it another go and see what happens this time and give you a shout. Thank you.

I want the vpn set up so I can access my nas remotely and also use my internet connection when out using unsecured wifi elsewhere. Also when people are babysitting for my kids they always have some tv issue so if on the vpn I can use my phone to operate the tv, av receiver and even Fire TV etc.

Ah, I misread your initial post. You want to set up a server within your local network. You know it's not required to connect remotely to a home network to do many of the things you mention? You could just set up port forwarding on your router and have done with it! Might be an easier alternative

As you have stated, "you don't like it". That is all, nothing more. Kodi on pi's serve a purpose and not just for "noobs". I have two pi's running in the kids room. They play from a local 6TB store of movies, tv shows and cartoons. They are controlled by ipads/ipods. Works perfectly for what is required. I would use one as the main media server client but they are not able to decode the .265 codecs. I use an MiniMX S905 box for that. A little but nore money but serves the purpose perfectly running librelec.

i checked out the link but only see that i will get - but is that enough to get it up and running?

• A free Camera Module connector
• A free USB and HDMI cable bundle

This offer is for six- and 12-issue subscriptions only (new and renewal orders).
xeroc
28 Aug 16 #54
It can handle that - I use a spare USB>Ethernet I had around. Worked out of the box. Obviously not ideal - but Pis don't have 1000mbps ethernet ports in general anyway even on the RPi3, so you ain't going to get amazing speeds. I only use it for specific devices where full 100mbps throughput isn't essential. I haven't seen any performance issues, but I don't use mine for things like video streaming, which may see it sweat a little bit - I couldn't say.

If you want a VPN set up with RPi I would personally recommend getting a 3, just to solve the ethernet issue and the potential performance degradation. But, Zeros definitely work  I'm pretty certain that, even on the 3 however, the Ethernet port is shared by the USB bus.

That is correct, I had wondered with Pi 2/3 also but never got a conclusive answer. Retropie is great especially since 4.0 release, dirt simple to use, but you really need the power of a rasp3 to use it on some of the emulators, combined with a £7 USB ps3 controller from asda and a memory card you're good to go

Not necessarily. You could achieve similar, though without the encryption element and potentially at greater risk to your network, by simply port forwarding each device from the LAN over the WAN. Easier to set up. Granted, nowhere near as flexible.

29 Aug 16 #75
Simple is good, simple works.

Mobdro: Install .apk and run, that's it

Kodi is nowhere near that simple. The problem with replies such as yours is that you don't backup what you say, you need to be specific. Tell me the Kodi setup you have and the addons and I'll test them out. I don't mind being wrong, I've been wrong before so has everyone else. So backup your claims.

I've built Kodi setups from scratch and used the contemporary addons of the time, they change quite often, so what was the go to addon will have changed for a new one. I haven't found anything simpler than Mobdro and Plex. I've tried trial IPTV subs on Kodi and they work, that's the only reason I can see for using Kodi for streaming, Mobdro and Plex do it simpler and better.

So please list the latest addons you think rival Mobdro (equivalent (IP)TV streaming) and VOD (Video on Demand) and we can crack on and get them tested. I look forward to it.

Lastly as I said #12 Kodi works as a standard media player, my chagrin over Kodi is the bloated builds, the stability of the addons and addons that lose development and stop working then it's on to the next unstable addon.
RiverDragon8
29 Aug 16 #76
I've uploaded a video for you to watch on youtube to show you how easy Kodi video addons is to use. You calling people on here kn0bs for using Kodi?? just because you can't understand how to use it yourself and you prefer to use an inferior Mobdro instead..... who's the kn0b?

For a complete beginner like you install a build like paradox which has all the latest addons.
fishmaster
29 Aug 16 #78
I've come to my conclusion. I installed Paradox as that's what you're using in your video so you must be a complete beginner as well, I thought I'd join in your way of thinking which is by way of assumption. I couldn't find anything that was more convenient or as extensive as the VOD service I have in Plex and Mobdro which just works. I also found there were too many addons, many of which are unreliable. I then delved deeper in to the forums at http://www.theblackboxostv.co.uk who are the people who create Paradox, and there's many complaints about the reliability there also.

Lastly the people who make Paradox have scrolling ads and a shop to milk the n00bs. They also limit the amount of downloads of the wizard to 4 so that others can't milk n00bs, I'll guess to get unlimited Paradox downloads you need to pay a fee. It's not a problem as anyone who knows what they're doing doesn't need Paradox anyway. All you need is Kodi 16 and the repositories/addons.
RiverDragon8
29 Aug 16 #79
Seriously whats wrong with you? You come on here pretending to know whats what and get found out. I was nice enough to do that youtube video to show how to get free TV series/movies because you've been living under a rock all this time in denial.
The reason I use paradox build is because I've tried 10 different builds and I think personally paradox is the best (It's normal for Kodi fans to mess around with different builds). I use wookie build on SPMC as backup. It's obvious to anyone that your clueless about Kodi addons from this post and other posts you bad mouthed Kodi on. If you don't know something why on earth would you come on here and pretend that you do. Stop with the BS. You have to be mentally ill to carry on with this charade otherwise why would you carry on with the pretence.

29 Aug 16 #80
I'm saying that Plex + Mobdro works for me. Kodi obviously works for you and thanks for the video. Yes I have learnt something today, I've learnt of some new Kodi addons and I've already started to explore it further by installing Kodi on my Galaxy S6 and played around with some of the addons. It won't replace Mobdro on my phone though, Mobdro is built for the task and does it better than Kodi at least on my phone it does. I'll test Kodi default install with a couple of the addons and see how it fares on my Amazon Firestick. I also have an Nvidia TV Shield which I'll also test it on.

No it is not the same. The app for controlling the smart TV will expext the TV to be on the same lan as the phone, not least because it will likely find the TV by lan broadcast. Requires the phone to be on the local lan, either directly or by VPN.

You might persuade the app to operate through a forwarded port, by explicitly telling it that the TV is on your external home IP address or similar. Not too likely to work (unless the app is designed for remote operation, but I don't think they are). Personally I would not find it acceptable from a security perspective to leave the port open.

I've been using a RP2 with Kodi for the past 5 months as primary use.
No complaints at all, and no overclocking used.
I tried different versions:
- Openelec
- Retropie + Kodi Plugin, with default boot to Kodi.

The second is my current setup just for the versatility of using the system as a retro-gaming console as in when required without having to swap micro-SD cards.

All in all I am extremely satisfied with Kodi running on Raspberry Pi 2.
