XFX AMD Radeon RX 480 OC 1288mhz XXX Edition Backplate 8GB GDDR5 HDMI 3x DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card

This edition of the 480 comes with the nice looking backplate fitted. To be honest I would hold off buying any 480 until the aftermarket cards come out. But if you need one right now then I would get this nicer looking card with the backplate.

They never had a monopoly but 56.7% is very good when AMD are on 25.1% with Intel integrated on 17.8%.

Consoles are a mere blood transfusion, Zen needs to be successful and less so Vega.
But AMD are diversifying with licensing deals in China etc so hopefully 2016/2107 is when they turn the corner.

Tegra is a mere sideshow for nVidia but they do seem to be gaining traction with it in automobiles so maybe it will finally pay off!
A bigger issue for Nvidia is Cray stating this week that they have more orders for systems with Intel Xeon Phi than Nvidia Tesla P100. But Nvidia’s finances are looking solid so I don’t see any real threat right now.

What a peculiar position to be in. Reminds me of many cars that run the same engine through the range but software alters their power (I'm a total car donk, so that could be wrong). Great situ if you end up with one though, and can flash them as you say. I nearly bought a 480, nearly. Just couldn't wait for the custom one to arrive, too impatient, got a GTX 1060 instead. I'm expecting a mild improvement over my 650 1GB.
vulcanproject
22 Jul 16 #40
I very much like Nvidia's products though, they very often deliver the best cards at the right time.

Arguably the RX 480 is in a sweet spot, but then along comes the GTX1060 which for the most part beats it up for another £15-£20 or so.

The real advantage AMD have is DX12 async compute/vulkan because it's clear AMD's architecture makes large gains even on older generation cards while previous Nvidia cards make zero. The current Nvidia cards make some gains, but not as much as AMD again. It's a fantastic advantage but AMD need it in lots of huge games, not just a handful, and they need them now to sell brand new cards, not in 12 months as sales drop and refreshes arrive.

The problem is then by the time those technologies are widespread in games it seems this GPU generation will be over with most of them sold, and AMD's advantage will be gone again. If you're keeping a card a long time AMD seem to be a good choice, but as a lot of people ditch cards and move up quickly then they will always pick the best card at the present time, and invariably that has been Nvidia for several years now especially in the midrange.
MBeeching
22 Jul 16 #39
Arguably the monopoly has already passed with 56% of Steam users using Nvidia cards. Credit to AMD fighting to the death though considering their existence hinges on the revitalised console industry. The PS4/XBox were certainly not predicted to sell this well.

Nvidia do have too many eggs in one basket though, their Tegra mobile platform is barely making an impact. If things turn rough and profits drop Intel will probably swoop in for the steal and annihilate everyone. (Which will be awful!)

Over £30 cheaper than the sapphire nitro.... although the guy over at eteknix said that the nitro was the best looking computer hardware he had ever laid eyes on....
Should be noted that the overclocking abilities are pure silicon lottery. Could get something that clocks o n 1475mhz on get stuck on 1360mhz...

6 Jul 16 #31
I would think so buddy, I mean really, usually it's just worth getting the 8gb in the off chance, you never know and the extra energy cost for that 4gb is not bad, but the fact here is the 4gb card is £174 while the 8gb is £220, now the extra 4gb is not worth £46, esp when it's not even being used, once paired with 4gb of 8gbps v-ram it should mitigate the odd frame loss.
lol then even an overclock on the memory which should be an easy 10% should help and make the 8gb even less relevant even under crossfire conditions.

I've had 2 XFX cards (more fool me). First was a 5830 and I had to twist it to make it work. XFX didn't want to know as it was over a year old when it finally got so bad I couldn't twist it enough, Opened it up and found 2 screws were missing inside.
Then bought a 7870 XT - it was a really good deal. Worked fine for about a year and then started crashing when starting games. Opened that one up a few days ago and I found 2 of the thermal pads inside were in completely the wrong position. I relocated them and now the card works perfectly.
For me, XFX must have very poor quality control, I will not touch them again.

6 Jul 16 #28
Not so much bottlenecking more that the card is not really usable at 4k res and that's really where you need the 8gb.
to Answer your question stick with the 4gb buddy, here's a video to help you out,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGdhW_GF3dg
Your talking a 1-3 frame difference on ultra or very high settings, it might be worth waiting to get the after market versions though and pick up a 4gb that runs 8gbps total rather than the reference 4gb which runs at 7gbps, the extra speed should help mitigate that 1-3 frame disadvantage, maybe?
Let me know if it helped.

There is a shortage of 4gb models so they are just disabling 4gb of the memory and selling them as 4gb cards. People are flashing the bios to unlock the other 4gb and unlocking the full 8gb. Won't be long before they catch up with the manufacturing though.

Love amd but still £40 overpriced not amd's fault but rather U.K. retailers, taxes and price gouging all in effect here, so no sale here.
I'm more than likely gonna buy a NVidia 970/980 or new gtx 1060, price dependant will only be my 2nd NVidia card but prices are gd for the older cards, I'm also getting really sick of these 3 fan designs it ridiculous all flash no substance, there's no need for 3 fans, 2 is enough geez 1 large fan will do it as long as it has a good heatsink like sapphire, msi, evga has in the past, the nano worked ok as well that fan design on an rx480 is all that's needed.

I'd research the OCing on these cards... the only way to get more performance is to increase the power draw, and because the reference cards only have a 6 pin power, it may try and suck more power through the PCI slot, which is why people are reporting fried Mobos.

Basically, with these early cards, the OC versions offer zero benefits over non-OCed versions.

At this point in time I'm still looking at a 970 for £200.
Memory is less of an issue due to compression and you can OC them.
Also my 670 waterblocks will fit.

Of course I may change my mind once 1060 and the 480aib release...

Passed around from person to person. Never got sorted in the end. Every reason you could image was given at some point. Not uncommon sadly based on some of the forums I visit.

Glad you got it sorted, but 1.5 months hardly seems like a reasonable timeframe for me. Gigabyte took 3 days (UK RMA based), so worth factoring these things in if there is not a huge difference in cost.

XFX has the worst customer support I have ever used. Forget warranty claims with them. They also have a higher than industry standard failure rate - to the point a major UK retailer stopped selling them for around 6 months.

Just a terrible company all around. Buy a RX480 from almost anyone else if you want one.

Had an 290x from XFX and just died but the most suprising is that even that the card was 2nd hand and died - XFX has accepted my warranty claim and my card has been exchanged to a new one - CS are based in Netherlands but any card will be sent to NL then to Hong kong - which takes aprox 1.5 month tops - this is based on my own experience, don't know what was yours as you have just stated they are the worst - in my opinion CS was pretty good and been updated through the whole process.

Forgot to mention there were no customs charges as the card will be sent directly from HK to your address after being fixed/exchanged - just so you are aware

Well, the thing which still has me avoiding Nvidia for years (did get a GTX970 though for someone who absolutely insisted) was the solder defects (Bumpgate) they had in the 80nm days and for which they never came totally clean even after lawsuits.
Personally saw so many cards and stuff die (8800GT, 8400GS, nForce boards etc.) and have been avoiding them ever since. Nvidia did eventually settle for around $250 million but the actual damage was way higher as millions of card failed.
Ironically, they like to portray themselves as the premium brand but when something goes wrong they don't want to know. Guess in their mind serious Nvidia fans only 'rent' their stuff and most of these cards failed after 2-4 years.

Agree entirely with OP, would recommend waiting for AIB cards but this is a good deal regardless. The power draw problem has been blown completely out of proportion. Nvidia and AMD have probably had about the same level of cock-ups if we're honest (although only one company is regularly accused of being anti-consumer and competition...); Fermi and 3.5Gate were atrocious on the Green side and reference R9 290 and their underdelivering CPUs are bad on the Red side. Drivers are a total ****-show for both sides, historically AMD have been worse for bugs although probably on par now. Nvidia actually managed to brick several of their older cards earlier this year. And now this is another driver error for AMD. I wish people would just be a bit more balanced with their incredibly strong opinions.
