£3.50 for a box of wonky veg in Asda, Blackpool store Cherry Tree Road. Didn't have much left when we went but they're really good for the money!

The reason we throw away wonky veg is not the EU.
Supermarkets have a cosmetic grading standard, if the veg doesn't meet this strict guidelines then it doesn't make it to the shelves.
This results in an insane amount of waste, in part driven by a belief that we'll not buy anything that doesn't look perfect.
Wonky veg is a small step in reducing this, the next step is to stop pre-packaging vegetables and fruit!

The wonky veg idea was a proposition to see if consumers will accept less perfect looking veg if it's cheaper and thereby reduce waste.

Basically according to eu regulations a lot of veg doesn't meet the specifications for sale in the uk. It used to be just thrown away because for example the carrot was too fat or the cucumber was slightly curved. I'm talking hundred if not thousands of tonnes a year just thrown away at the farmers expense. Wonky veg has been introduced by a few supermarkets to see if we really care about how a carrot is too fat etc and also to try to prevent food waste. It's a stupid eu rule that has caused numerous farms to go bust. By labelling them as wonky they can get away with selling it.

I asked one of the workers in Slough Asda and they told me the boxes disappear the moment they're displayed...I've yet to see one in there...

Most processors will have tighter specifications than supermarkets due to mechanisation, so even though spuds and veg end up chopped up or mushed, they have to arrive at the start end 'perfect'. Classic example of this is the humble (nowadays, largely tasteless) spud.

I think its great that this is an option instead of the food being thrown away but to me, it doesn't seem that great value for money. If I go to my local market, £3.50 can get you a crazy amount of a vegtables

This might be what you're referring to. Note this story was in 2008. Nothing was banned, it was just sold as Class 1 or class 2. Either way, most of those regs were binned anyway. Hope this helps you understand the myth.
What about them? They fear the reintroduction of the Window Tax? They buy Windolene in bulk? I need closure.

I didn't think it was anything to do with the EU although stand to be corrected. It's the supermarkets saying they don't want it as customers won't buy it. Just about all the big supermarkets are selling veg that's not perfect. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall tv show.. war on waste... started it all off. Thursday this week he started on the coffee cups, as all going to landfill as they can't be recycled. Don't put your coffee cups in the recycling bin.... Go get um Hugh. He dose to

A brilliant idea but would rather call in at my local market and keep their business going than give to the big Corporates. It's cheaper as well!
