The drives are hardware encrypted. You cannot turn this encryption off. There is a password option, but even if you do not use this, the drives are still always encrypted. The electronics that do the encryption are built into the enclosure. The encryption/decryption key is built into a chip in the enclosure. The user has no access to this key.

isn't that only the 2-bay enclosure rather than the single bay HDD in this deal?

I thought that was true, but regardless, I'm willing to take a risk, I've never had an enclosure fail, but I've had dozens of disks fail either at home or work, so if anything I'm more worried about a disk failure. But regardless, failure of the enclosure or disk, I'll go back to my backup for recovery.

If anything I'd be happy if my data was encrypted (assuming it can't be broken), at least if it was stolen I wouldn't have to worry about my personal documents being read by someone else.

from reading the reviews it looks like the 2-bay RAID drives are encrypted, but there is no mention of encryption on the single drives. this user review quoted below took one apart and put it in his machine as a standard drive so the drives themselves are not encrypted, there may be an encryption layer in the enclosure itself that cannot be turned off. still not sure if it applies to the 1-bay model or not.

edit: All WD drives with "Smartware" are encrypted. If it doesn't have Smartware, it's not encrypted.

If you mean "is this 2 x 4TB drives", then no, it's a single bay enclosure with 8TB, possibly a Red WD80EZZX.

anyone tried removing the drives and putting into a pc? still issues of encryption? tempted to give it a go but wanted to check if anyone's tried it.

i got 3 WD 6tb mybooks and all were encrypted. so i copied data to the new driva via usb3, removed the drive, stuck in the pc and it wouldn't see the files, even though i deleted the partition, made a new one and formatted first

i got a 8th mybook and did the same and the pc read the files i copied. no encryption

anecdotal evidence. it may not always be the same. but it saved me about 24 hours of copying as i filled the whole drive and checked first before removing from the caddy to put inside the pc (and voided warranty)

I have this drive, I cannot confirm for certain whether hardware encryption is permanently switched on, however it comes with WD software on the drive including the following utility -



I have installed none of the WD utilities while using this drive, it doesn't seem to make much sense to offer encryption and password protection in a optional utility if it is in fact a permanent feature.

I see this quite regularly and have a little working theory. A 3rd party seller offers a premium product at a big discount with a certain number in stock. If this is done correctly it triggers an automated price reduction algorithm at Amazon, which in turn reduces the price of its own stock to come close to, but not necessarily match the 3rd party seller. When the price has come down sufficiently, the 3rd party seller buys their stock from amazon to then resell at full price at a later date. The long lead times on their own stock give them the flexibility to cancel their own orders at any future date before the shipping time. If you think about it, it's quite a nice way to build up a cheap stock of products to sell on elsewhere. Might be wrong, but looking at camel camel camel, on certain items you can see sudden 3rd party price drops eventually trigger a big amazon price drop, where price history and market trends don't seem to warrant such a reduction.

Tried Flubit, used my points so it can give me an offer in an hour. Waited 12 hours for the offer been created.

By the time, amazon price increased, Flubit offered £172 which is more expensive than the deal posted.

People who get offered £149 is really lucky. Just hope they actually fulfill the order. Because sometimes Flubit will cancel your order and give reasons as out of stock after you waited for your order to come for 1 or 2 weeks.

Really disappointed in Flubit in this instance. It did not keep its promise and wasted my points.

Got a Flubit offer 30 mins ago for £151.59 - thought it was odd as they said I was saving £2.21 so assumed they must be beating the 3rd party seller's price rather than Amazon direct. Either way immediately accepted and paid only to receive a cancellation e-mail a minute later saying 'out of stock'. Not sure what's going on with this tbh.

Sign up for flubit Elite membership, it's £15 with a money back guarantee if you don't save that over a year. Flubit Elite offers are pretty much immediate(zero waiting), and the sellers tend to send out the goods very quickly e.g. next day - much better than standard flubit with slow offers and slow dispatch. I was a bit dubious about Elite but have found it to be very good.

I've not any problems with Flubit, but in this instance they offered me £2.61 off the price of £168.54, at which I thought there's little point taking it, especially since I had most of the value in vouchers. I guess they must actually have humans doing the pricing, hence the variability. I'd have bitten there hand off if they'd just match that price.

That's an interesting theory, the stock seemed to come and go on a regular basis, whilst the Amazon price was dropping regularly on a daily basis, I'd already asked Flubit for better offers on three occasions this week, because it just seemed to get cheaper, but each time the price difference was minimal, once Amazon got to within a £15 of this potentially dodgy seller, that was the time to bite. Glad I did.

Amazon give you buyer protection as long as you pay through them though, don't they?
I bought one a couple of days ago and it is reported as dispatched now via Yodel so we shall see how quickly it comes and as far as warranty aren't WD okay about dealing with end customers directly now?

Just as I said in post 19, order from Flubit got cancelled. This happens way too often with Flubit. That makes me use them less and less.

Because Flubit cancel your order, at the same time that you are likely already missed out on the original deal.

Luckily that I still kept my amazon order as I anticipated all this.

For anyone willing to take the risk, mark maurin has the 8TD drive at £143.80 + £0.59, he now has 13 available, which is better than the 1 available last night, and exactly the same number as he had available on a daily basis earlier this week.

How did you find out how many units he has?

If you are referring to "13 new from £143.80". That is saying 13 sellers not quantity of stock.

Sometimes when I'm logged in I get a quantity instead of the In Stock , I'm not sure why, but maybe it has something to do with me being logged in as a seller.

That Mark Maurin info pages says 7-14days delivery after dispatch - seems a bit too long to be UK based. Be interesting to see if all ok tho - but I'd be sure to give it a full read/write on the drive. I presume these are shingled drives too?

Mark Maurin had them up for £143.80 late last night. I purchased 2 not expecting them to really be honoured, and got the email today to confirm they've been dispatched. £288.78 (inc delivery) for 16tb of WD space is a good deal.
Clearly I'll have to run tests on the drives who wouldn't, but one for storage and one for backup.... worth a go!
Should contain a Non Shingle 8tb WD Red or an HGST HE drive.. either way I'm happy.

I also ordered one the other day at a slightly higher price. I emailed him about the slightly higher price and he said he'd part refund once delivery had been taken, so fingers crossed. Was dispatched yesterday according to Amazon. If it checks out, may also order another as it's a bit of a steal!

The 8TB WD is noisier than my HGST Touro Desk Pro 4TB which make me wonder if the 8TB drive is ok and whether it will last.

However, HGST Touro is quietest drive I have used. It is quieter than my Seagate 4TB too.

I'll be shukking the drives (removing from caddy) anyway so foreign plugs wouldn't bother me bar the slightly less money I'd get on resale of the empty caddies.

Recertified would be upsetting however.

I'll be checking the serials on WDs warranty checker when I get them.

He states brand new direct from manufacturer with 2 year warranty so if there's any issues he really doesn't have a leg to stand on and Amazon will protect buyer

The listings by marc.maurin look fake to be honest. There are a number of red flags, only 1 shipping option @59p, delivery taking 7-14 days from UK mainland. Low number of seller feedback ratings. Other items hard drives and drones all at lowest prices for each item, undercutting by almost £200 for the dji 4 drone. Description of condition for drone and all items are exactly the same: Lastly, nobody has received anything from that seller yet.

My guess of what he is doing - is that he's thinking Amazon will undercut him, then he can order from Amazon directly and ship them to you, netting a small profit of the difference. As that hasn't happened and is very unlikely to happen, you'll just end up without anything in return and your money refunded to you.

That really is a win-win if you got them to get that close to the 3rd party price and got it direct from Amazon too.

I'm going to put in one last Flubit demand and see what comes back and then cancel this marc.maurin order, he doesn't appear to be running out now so can hopefully reorder if needs be. Starting to agree with some of the comments about the seller not having enough credibility. Has anyone contacted him to ask for more info about where these drives are coming from and why the delay?

apparently it used to be Hitachi Helium jobs. think they're called He8

but that was early models before the wd red 8tb were released

since then reds have been found and following that a completely new wd 8tb drive more akin to a green

have heard it may be possible to open with minimal damage (not no damage) depending how careful you are

it was impossible with the 4tb Hitachi dx3. I opened 18 with varying degrees of damage to the casing

It was a WD80EZZX inside mine. Doubt there's a way to open without the clips inside breaking. My clips broke. I used an iSesamo tool to open, no damage to the outside, very easy to do. Even without the clips the case can be used again.

I contacted marc maurin asking him if these HDDs are the real deal and if I will actually receive my order, here's what he replied with:

Just taken delivery of the one I ordered via Flubit for £143.08 a week ago and It's direct from Amazon, so pleased with that.

Still got this marc.maurin one on order, tempted to cancel but I might wait a couple more days and see what happens. Still no tracking info as of today.

Just sent a message through through Amazon to marc.maurin asking him to cancel my order and received the following disconcerting response:

"We are sorry to let you know that your email(s) below cannot be delivered. The recipients have decided to leave the Amazon.co.uk platform or are not eligible to receive any further email communications."

Hope this doesn't mean he's done a runner with all our cash.

Yes, just did the same. Can't fault their service, didn't even have to wait for the delivery window to expire to get the refund. I'd love to know what this guy was up to and how much money he's taken in the last few weeks on the back of all these MyBook orders and some of the other items he was offering. Guess we'll never know.
