You can take it out and reformat it to NTFS, so clearing all the data so bear that in mind before you copy and then shuck. I've shucked 10+ WD's and they work great.

Nah 6 month warranty because they have broke before and are more likely to do so again. That's why they're cheap.

Wow cheap upgrade for my naps once I sell old drives. I take it you can just take these out and reformat as usual ? I have been stripping these drives out of enclosures for years always been a really cheap way of getting drives.

2nd hand 4TB mechanical drive?
It's also a 5,400rpm rather than 7,200rpm drive. You should also read around the issue of 'WD Green Head Parking' and make sure you're happy with what you read before buying.
I think you'd be mad to buy one of these unless you plan on using it only infrequently.

Greens are low power hence the 5400rpm

Greens are slow and the electricity you save is tiny. Certainly not worth the performance hit.
"In terms of cost, using a green hard drive compared to a normal one makes very little difference. Assuming your drive spends 4 hours reading and writing and 20 hours idle per day, switching from the WD Black to Green saves you only 45 kilowatt-hours per year. The national average cost of a kilowatt-hour is 11.93 cents, netting you a whopping $5.38 per year for your sacrifice of 1800 RPM. For comparison, changing one 60-watt lightbulb used 4 hours a day to a 7-watt fluorescent one saves you more, about $9.23 per year."

Its a marketing ploy in general the greens, but they also obmit less heat. They have a place in the market place, but it really depends on what your us is.

The effect of the falling pound against the dollar is seeing prices of drives rising. Some sellers are using up old stock they bought cheaper but as they buy new stock the prices will rise for a while. Don't expect any price drops soon.

I picked up one of the slightly more expensive Live Book Studio to see if the drive used in those is any different as I could not see anywhere that suggested if it was a Green or not. The metal case is a big plus as it is easier to take apart without damage! thinking of the warranty
