Aye but the fact that it's probably not a patch on something that's 20 times the price should hardly be a shock.
Worth a punt at that price for the novelty.

A QR code I've put together for this scope so Google Cardboard gets the right lens settings for it. Configured with a Lenovo P2 5.5" screen.
Enjoy!

This was my first VR headset, so I don't have much to compare it to, but I was a bit disappointed to be honest. The fitting is not the best, it is not adjustable at all...so I don't think it will fit well on kids head. Besides you might want to check few other models that people here have been mentioning, Bobovr Z4 being one of them...I read some reviews and they seem to be a bit more adjustable, also read some good reviews for NoonVR, but they are 10x the price.
However, all of the reviews for smartphone VR headsets that I have seen, recommend to have a smartphone with a screen resolution of at least 2560x1440 pixels to get the best experience. So you might want to first check what type of smartphone your grandson has, before buying VR headset as a gift. Also be aware that you still need apps for this to properly work...and Google Cardboard app only goes so far.
I hope this helps at least a bit and perhaps somebody else can give their 2 pence regarding how this VR headset compares to some other pricier models.

Somebody mentioned there is no QR code in the manual or the box. The VR headset sold in Home Bargains seem to be a version of Shinecon. See following link to find a QR code: VR headset QR codes

Just got one from my local - they had loads there. Seems fairly decent quality for a five quid bit of kit but as others have said, it's a bog standard basic viewer so you'll need a Bluetooth controller and don't expect it to work as well as more expensive models or last very long. I was gonna say it'd be great for kids but I've got an average size head and the straps just don't go small enough for me to get a comfortable fit (it's also on the heavier size compared to friends units I've tried) I don't know who manufactures them so you can't get a VR QR code for it anywhere.
As I'm typing this the whole front of the unit just came away in my hand (not just the removable panel - the whole front!) so it's going back! Just glad I didn't have my mobile in it at the time!!!

managed to pick one up today, seems ok but the FOV is fairly limited so its not particularly immersive. good build quality for the price though and there is ample adjustability to use most phones.

I find by slightly removing and allowing the front magnetic cover to click back in place allows the action to be sensed. Also have read that waving a magnet near the headset solves the issue
Bought it to see what it was like, promptly returned as its terrible. This is something that a "punt" will ruin your experience of. For not much more, VR becomes SO much more immersive (eg Bobovr z4). This is like watching a screen through a square smarties tube.

yeah that makes sense I guess, kinda similar to the Wii when it launched, people were like "yeah, exercise in the living room when gaming" reality: sat on your bum jerking a wiimote around
I'm not entirely certain VR will take off (I admitted already I haven't used one - so I know this is view is flawed) I may look at it in a year or two or demo PSVR, i'm only rocking a HD7950 which ain't powerful enough anyway on PC.

As good as room scale is, you will get tired and want to have a seating VR experience. And right now the majority of room scale titles are pretty much tech demos. I'm really looking forward to Fallout 4 VR as a room scale title. I purposely stopped playing the normal version so I can enjoy everything in VR. I own an Oculus Rift so I cannot wait for the touch controls because a gamepad definitely doesn't cut it for VR.

seated? I've never played on one, but surely the experience is designed to be stood up and moving about like a thunderbird puppet?

Not sure if people know the differences so here you go (feel free to add more info)
Google cardboard (and plastic) there are 2 typest some have a button some don't. If you buy one that doesn't you will need a Bluetooth controller or a OTG cablet with either a mouse or controller pad.
These devices are able to use all the Internet with no barriers. But you cant access oculus gear vr stuff.
Oculus gear vr. Have an actual d-pad on side on visor to control what you doing but as soon as you connect the phone oculus loads up and you can't access your phone.
There is an app that let's you access Google cardboard. Think it's 60 pence.
Cardboard for gear vr is the app.
metalnigel
25 Jul 16#30
Yeah, 2m x 2m is the minimum recommended space for room scale as far as I know. It can also be used seated though.

Poisoning the well? I don't think so. I ordered a cardboard kit when I saw it on HotUKDeals and was very impressed by it. I then ordered something like this from one of the china sites as I wanted to see if/how much better it was. In my opinion the advantages of this over the cardboard is the lack of assembly required and the robustness of it. It would be up to the individual if it's worth paying the extra for this.
All in all it has been a good introduction into VR and if I had a compatible Samsung phone I'd likely have a GearVR because of this and Cardboard. The device I used for Cardboard has a 2k resolution screen.

I would say it IS big enough......but you will wish it was bigger

cicobuff is absolutely spot on.
I had a Bobo z4 with a 1440p 5.5" Oppo find 7 and it was VERY impressive.
I've since bought a Vive expecting it to blow that experience out of the water but it just doesn't. Yeah it does most things better (some WORSE though) and the smoothness and tracking are obviously great...but the two things are still comparible. Its not a 'night and day difference' thing at all

I knew it was a bad idea to talk about this on a deals website. This isn't just my view, It's the view of everyone that wants VR to succeed. These headsets are poisoning the well. But I think Oculus & HTC really need to make demo units available to as many stores as possible because the difference is night and day when compared to this, It can't even be considered an entry level to VR. Sorry for bothering you all.

I think you are clouding things with your own judgement of exactly what VR is, you originally said this is not VR, I would disagree. Yes admittedly both this and the GearVR is 'rudimentary' but certainly as I have already said the google cardboard experience is still dependent on the FOV, the quality of the lenses and build and also importantly the quality of phone, screen size and resolution. Obviously something like the PS VR is going to be light years ahead of any smart phone VR experience with integral OLED display and processing unit coupled with the APU of the PS4 allowing upto 120 hz, but for an introduction to VR there certainly is nothing wrong with a decent quality google cardboard headset as long as it is coupled with a phone that makes the most out of its simplistic approach to VR.

24 Jul 16#18
60FPS isn't enough for VR. and that's all current smartphone displays offer. Even though the Rift has a lower resolution than high end smartphones the SDE is much lower than my Galaxy Edge 7 on GearVR. I like that samsung are taking VR seriously but until we get a phone display that's tailored for VR and a motion controls option then these HMDs aren't good enough in my opinion. But I know it's early days and I can't wait until we have full peripheral FOV and 16K HMDs!
metalnigel
24 Jul 162#12
"VR Headset". This isn't VR. If you don't want to be disappointed, go for a GearVR, Rift or Vive. Or wait for PSVR. because google cardboard is not representative of what proper Virtual Reality is.

Cardboard works well enough for me.
£5.99 vs £700...moving on.
cicobuff to metalnigel
24 Jul 161#17
That simply is not true, all dependent on what phone you utilise with it. QHD resolution phones coupled with a decent processor and 5.5-6" screens give a very reasonable representative of what 'proper' VR is.
My Bobo Z4 gives a very reasonable FOV of 120°, admittedly prolonged use ramps up the phones APU, but offers a very good experience akin to my first demo of VR trying out the Gear VR at The Gadget Show.
Obviously experiences with google cardboard will vary depending on the design of the headset, the FOV and the phone used. I do not know what unit this is for sale at HB, however if it has a poor FOV coupled with a 720p phone of a small screen size such as an iPhone 5 you will be disappointed.

Exactly, These cheap headsets are a novelty. I'm just warning people that are underwhelmed by it that this isn't what proper VR is. VR needs positional tracking and 90FPS for it to be comfortable.
