The cheapest first class advance ticket from Edinburgh to Crewe on VTWC is £38.50 when there isn't a sale, so £77 return for one person. So no way could you get two for £87.40.
Cheaper tickets are available on Transpennine for as little as £33.10 each way. So if there are two people getting those fares, both using a railcard, it would come to the figure you quoted.
But it's not a fair comparison. Transpennine first class gets you a small snack and a drink in a paper cup - if you're lucky and there's a catering trolley on the train. With Virgin you get proper meals, proper drinks, alcohol and use of the first class lounge at the stations at both ends, where you can get free snacks and drinks.

I cant find any such thing. Current pricing now is £101.40 for 1 adult return traveling standard class.
The price difference between Standard (Advance) and First Class is almost double when not on sale. Compare that with a difference of £20 during the sale!

I was able to go straight to the website and find the same for £87.40 without any sale, with a normal advance ticket for 2, so my point stands.

you had to have your two pence worth. I made an error but people like you can't help yourself. Whilst I was doing 101 things I made an error. The deal has ended.

I can't find any tickets for £4:00. I was searching for travel from Luton to Brighton.

This is for Virgin West Coast services only. That's trains from Euston to Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and stations en route. Not Luton or Brighton.

This should turn out to be a great deal. They will no doubt be delayed, or cancelled (meaning having to get a later train), so you can get your money back through the compensation scheme.
They're so bad, i've lost count of the amount of money i've had back off them over the years. This month alone it's over £400.

Don't forget topcashback/quidco (2% I think), nectar points and check your Nectar account as often they give xxx bonus points for any purchase on Virgin Trains.

Are you kidding me!? Glasgow to Crewe for £7 each way! And departing on a Saturday morning! Absolute bargain for us because we can take the dog (unlike National Express or Megabus) when we visit my boyfriends family near Stafford!

Despite numerous so called sales, I've never actually found a fare that is cheaper than a normal advance fare. Is Virgin hoodwinking us?

No they are not - but it is only specific direct routes only using Virgin trains. So Euston-Manchester works great - but no deals if you want, say EUSTON-OXFORD ROAD etc.

There are always loads of tickets in the Virgin sale that are much cheaper than normal Virgin advance fares.
I've just picked a date at random (17/8 ) and looked at Glasgow to Euston. There are plenty of £14 sale tickets available. If there wasn't a sale on they would normally be £50+
