4 Jul 16 1 #11
FYI: The Virgin Trains West Coast website still has the expired SPRING SALE page, ie not updated yet.

As OP says the SUMMER SALE has begun despite it being advertised as from tomorrow Tuesday : like the OP I have booked SALE tickets already, ie just visit Virgin Trains website and alongside normal and Advance tickets you SHOULD find a limited number of "Sale" fares.

The OPTIMUM way to get Sale tickets is to go via a cashback site - eg via TopcashBack which has 2% until tomorrow and then just try the route(s) you want. Do be prepared to vary the dates/times to find those Sale tickets though, and the longer you leave looking, the harder it'll be to find them.
https://www.topcashback.co.uk/virgin_trains/
And have your NECTAR or Virgin Atlantic Flying Club # to hand as you can get a little bit of credit on one of those too!

The original posting about the sale, which includes a link to VTWC's Media announcement...
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/virgin-trains-west-coast-seat-sale-3-days-only-5th-7th-july-travel-23rd-july-4th-2469699?p=28313042

Do remember this is their WEST COAST sale and nothing to do with Virgin Trains East Coast routes/tickets.
ie Sale is for routes up that West Coast from London to Glasgow/Holyhead/Manchester/Liverpool/Blackpool and London-Birmingham-Edinburgh/Glasgow.

That cuz not Virgin Train's to sell. All the passengers and taxpayers contributions go to Angel Trains, presumably a very tax-efficient train leasing company:

Great deal! Booked a trip for five of us to head up to Edinburgh from Birmingham for £100 return! £500 saving apparently! Also booked London for the day, £16 return for the two of us. Thanks for letting us know the sale went live a day early - Virgin Trains haven't emailed me saying it has started so I could've potentially missed the train fare I wanted!

Not sure where you mean by EDI. Not recognised as a 3 character railway station abbreviation.
If you mean Edinburgh Waverley EDB then £14/£35 are the "Seat Sale" fares to London Euston EUS, and they are definitely still some available, albeit not on all services/dates.
(If EDB then you may be getting confused with Virgin Trains EAST COAST - not this Sale at all - as Virgin Trains West Coast don't have a 6:30am service on their timetable.)

Very disappointed this year. I looks forward to the spring and summer sales, as I can get a fast Virgin train (which leaves later), rather than the slow London Midland ones on my usual commute (as well as the odd first class seat as a treat!), but I've only been able to get one seat for this period this time round, whereas I don't usually have any trouble getting seats! Disappointed :disappointed: In anyone's experience, do they add any more seats as the day goes on? Or have I missed out this time round?

5 Jul 16 #104
As suggested look on the Virgin Trains website - ideally for you by having got there by say TopcashBack - from London Euston (EUS) to Edinburgh Waverley (EDB) and in the OPTIONS you could set 'direct services only'. Looking right now on say Thu 1/9 (one of the dates within the Sale period) it shows a few trains each way at the Sale £14/£35. Do remember to scroll through the times Earlier/Later.
mk-donald
5 Jul 16 1 #105
Bristol's served by a couple of TOCs, depends where you wanted to go to - eg to London it's First Great Western who rebranded themselves as Second to Last Western... oh no. as GWR "Great Western Railway".
https://www.gwr.com/about-us/our-business/our-vision

If you look at the National Rail Live departures for Bristol Temple Meads [BRI, the city centre station] you'll also see CrossCountry services to the North and South-West
http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/ldbboard/dep/BRI
.

That's like saying the Argos sale is useless for Tesco.

Virgin Trains West Coast don't go to the North East.

Their route map is here: https://www.virgintrains.co.uk/stations-destinations
Dealier
5 Jul 16 #107
Search for trains from Euston to Edinburgh, and then tell it to only show you trains via one of the stations on the West Coast line - for example Preston or Carlisle. Then it won't show you the East Coast services that aren't part of this offer.
arthurqpr
5 Jul 16 #108
that link helps. but it does not split between services deemed EC vs WC. you would just have to use common sense logic, but that gets hard for some of the routes in the middle bit (like C vs D, or D vs E)

any advice?
Dealier
5 Jul 16 #109
That link only shows West Coast routes.

The East Coast services go from Kings Cross to Peterborough, Doncaster, Leeds, York, Darlington, Newcastle and Edinburgh. East Coast has its own website - https://www.virgintrainseastcoast.com/ . It was a mistake for Virgin (actually Stagecoach - they own 90%) to have a second franchise using the same branding, it was always going to cause confusion.

If you are travelling on a weekend and wish to travel in First Class, in many cases it works out cheaper if you buy the Standard Class fare and then pay the 1st Class upgrade from the Train Manager (£10 for London -West Midlands/ £15 for all other routes). Don't automatically assume the First Class fare in the sale is cheaper, they usually work out more expensive.

Do realise too that First Class at weekends = the better/lower density seating is most of what you get, as the catering "perks" are extemely basic eg an individual cake/biscuit + bit of fruit!
https://www.virgintrains.co.uk/experience/first-class/weekend-travel
(Another reason too to avoid Bank Holiday travel in First Class as perks severely curtailed.)

Looking at the map, looks like you could travel north to Birmingham and then you can book onward travel to Scotland or the North West. I am not familiar with that part of the country so it may be easier or cheaper to go to London first?
mk-donald
6 Jul 16 #150
Tip: If you're travelling with CrossCountry trains - eg up via Gloucester/Cheltenham to Birmingham and beyond, or off to the South-West - I've always found it cheaper with their fares to SPLIT tickets, even Advance tickets, ie if going from A to C via a train that stops at B, to buy a ticket from A to B and another [on the same train] from B to C. Mind you it takes some experimentation to find the optimum split(s).

Perhaps I'm blind, but all the 'sale seats' that I'm trying on the fare finder is linking me to non-sale seats. Looks like they've pulled it early instead of 11am like they said.

At 11:03am: Sale has ended, but only for now - due to their "technical issues", so will be a last chance it seems!
"We promise to be back with another chance to pick up those Seat Sale tickets very, very soon. We don’t want you to miss out, after all."

I have recently traveled by RENFE Spanish TVE train between Alicante and Madrid for 40 Euro one way and 20 Euro the other a distance of 420 K, these are standard fares and the price depends on time of day but were not at ridiculous times, mid morning and mid day also when booking you get a seat allocated just like on an airplane so no standing.

As long as Ryanair keep taking me from Liverpool to Barcelona for less than £20 Branson can shove his train tickets to London firmly up his jacksie!
