great 3d printer for home use and for 82 pound delivered can't find it cheaper anywhere. the filament is proprietary so there is the trade off more expensive filament

This is one of those situations where the OP is gonna be kicking himself for sharing before taking delivery. Sorry Simon, I couldn't resist ordering just in case but it's gotta be a mis-price and their T&C's clearly state that no contract is formed until goods are dispatched.

I've found some US sellers clearing the 3rd Gen Cube for $200, which is about £155. I suppose it's possible that this is a clearance of old stock by the manufacturer through an authorised seller. Given these Transparent guys sell to schools, etc. they may have shifted quite a few in the last couple of years and been a favoured distributor of 3D systems and so have been chosen to get rid of this old model?

Anyone had a cancellation from transparent yet?
89quidyoucantgowrong
12 Jul 161#44
Yep, Una have cancelled the extra 'back-up' order I made this morning too. The online shops probably all tap into the same supply source. Transparent have pulled their £120 listing too. My son says his school recently took delivery of three of these exact same printers. There must have been a deep price cut at some point, with stock. And don't forget, there is the 3rd gen model with twin printheads in the US for £155, so it is plausible, just where exactly was the stock?
Sorry, I was writing this while thekanester posted. I've not had a cancellation from Transparent, only Una.

Did anyone also place an order at Onestoppcshop? They're still showing stock at £72.89 plus delivery.

12 Jul 16#46
Now gone from onestoppcshop.
I spoke to the UK distributor for 3D Systems (who make the Cube printer) and they don't know anything about this low price on the Cube 2. They haven't had any stock of the Cube 1, 2 or 3 for ages. I pointed out that the Cube 3 is selling for $200 in the US and they said they'd see if they could get some stock for the UK, but it would be unlikely. The cube 3 is much better than the 2, with twin print heads and a finer 70 micron print resolution. Not sure if it would be so easy to hack for using generic filament though.

Dear all,
Many thanks for your orders yesterday evening.
Unfortunately, there was a pricing error feeding to us from one of our suppliers and we are unable to fulfil the order at the price you have paid.
Having spoken to our supplier they have agreed to come down in price on these considerably to help and we are also happy to do the order at a reduced rate to assist in keeping the cost as low as possible.
I can therefore offer the printer you have ordered at a price of £99.00 ex VAT / £118.80 inc VAT, which should still be an incredible price compared to what the printer is usually worth.
If you would like to proceed with the order at this price please can you confirm your authorisation for us to create a charge for the additional £35.43 ex VAT / £42.52 inc VAT on the same card (or send a Paypal money request to the same account) as the original order? Goods will ship from us on Wednesday and be due to arrive with you on Thursday.
If you would not like to proceed with the order at this price then we will ensure that your order is cancelled and refund processed immediately for you.
I apologise for any inconvenience caused, but with this happening out of hours there was no immediate ability to resolve with our supplier.
If you can come back to me and let me know either way what you would like to do with the order then I can action accordingly.
Apologies again for the pricing error.

To me this 3D printer doesn't seem too much of a deal. The main issue with them is the price for discontinued cartridges forcing you to hack it for use with bulk filaments

It's strange that it happened out of hours, yet the price got jacked first to £79, then to £99 (+vat) overnight while we were still ordering them. I feel someone had their finger on the button, despite the message Simonw1975 has received.
Did anyone else get the same message as Simon?

I received the same email this morning.
I gave them a ring and they're a very friendly company. They were clearance stock but still new.
I've added some filament to my order and am going to test the hot-swapping hack to get round the 3DS filament lock once I've experimented with the official cartridge.
I'm a bit concerned about the non-standard filament size though, as it's just shy of 1.75mm I gather? :/
89quidyoucantgowrong
12 Jul 161#57
On filament size. Apparently, there is (unofficially) some manual adjustment in the filament feeder assembly where it can be slackened off to allow the slightly larger diameter 1.75 off the shelf reels to be used without jamming.
ThatTechGuy
12 Jul 161#58
Also if you decide to use 3rd party filament, there is a way to trick your cartridge into thinking it didn't use any (because it has a chip which predicts when the cartridge has run out). So just feed your own Filament in, Keep the original cartridge in its place/socket. Start printing, then Stop the print, pull out the cartridge and continue.
This should trick the printer into thinking its using its own cartridge, whilst your actually using your own filament. Also this doesn't make your cartridge chip think its running out of filament.
Should run on versions below 2.0.8..

Filament adjust guide:
1. After unplugging power supply, remove extruder cover.
2. Remove 2 front screws holding the fan in place. (Torx T8 I think) Careful not to drop the standoffs and carefully move the pcb aside on its wires.
3. Loosen the Nut now revealed next to the calibration disk (black & white segmented wheel)
4. Push a section of 1.75mm filament through the feeder. This should press the filament retaining wheel out a smidgen.
5. Gently tighten the nut up again. All being well the gap will be slightly wider than originally set.
6. Gently pull the filament out again.
7. Reassemble the pcb, standoffs and fan.
8. Replace cover and power up.
9. Load filament using the standard process.

Looks like we got lucky on the price. Ended up paying £100.79, which was £79 plus £4.99 delivery and VAT.

14 Jul 16#67

and why would you use masking tape?
89quidyoucantgowrong
14 Jul 16#68
No, I didn't get the email, but then I did still pay £18 more than the original £82 anyway.
The masking tape helps with adhesion of the project to the print bed and is easy to remove when complete. If you look around the 'net it's number one on most tip lists.
