Meet the Sega Mega Drive: Sonic 25th Anniversary Edition. This mini version of the original console comes with 80 original games built in, and is more feature-laden than Nintendo's equivalent, the Nintendo Classic Mini.
In addition to the built-in library, the new Mega Drive sports an original cartridge slot, allowing players to dust off their existing games and use them with the console. There's also the option to expand the console's internal memory, the size of which isn't specified, using an SD card slot. Games can then be downloaded from the internet.
Nintendo's re-released NES can't perform either of these functions and is offline-only.
In addition to the above, players will have access to USB charging, two wireless controllers and 'plug and play' functionality with modern televisions. The word HDMI is never explicitly stated, but it seems the only sensible option for a video output.
The kit costs £49.99 and can either be purchased as a handheld device or a traditional console. Obviously the handheld version doesn't include an extra controller and doesn't output to a television.

Read about this unit, not made by Sega, just some junk 3rd party licenced box and it has no HDMI, just Yellow/Red/White AV plugs which is absolutely not acceptable in this day and age plus will look junk on any modern TV. The fact it has a cart slot does not make up for the rest. I wish it was more like the SNES offering.

Seconded. It's amazing how much better the games sound on the original hardware, especially the early (high definition graphics, 1989/90) original Megadrive 1 systems, when you play them on the right hardware you can understand why the games and the music have such a cult following...

These are truly terrible, as mentioned, the sound chip is awful, try plugging in Micro Machines 2 or Mega Bomberman for maximum awfulness, audio out is mono and finally the controllers may look like the original 6 button versions but they are about 3/4 of the size and the buttons are raised a lot higher and will blister your thumb if you are a heavy button transitioner. If you really want this, best you can do is buy some official pads and also perform a sound chip fix mod (can be found on google, you'll need a soldering iron), but after all that you might as well just buy an original or dust off the one in the garage and a Everdrive, will cost a little more, but hell, you're worth it :wink:

I probably am but I'm not that bothered about sound quality, I will turn it down. The ever drive seems quite expensive for what it is by the time I have got that and a console it's going to be over £100.

I think I have all of them on a harddrive. And all the sms, snes, nes, gameboy. Mame, PC engine roms. Best thing is to just run an emulator for free...

No diff to the NES minis tbh and probably technically not much different to most modern day SBCs.
As already stated if you have the time and put the effort in you could easily do better with something like a raspberry pi for a similar price.
My current Retropie setup has around 40 systems, most with complete sets of roms and a slew of cheaply bought repro controllers, whilst having the ability to add to it at any time.
As time goes on emulation of the old systems will only get better so all these limited mini consoles are a complete waste of time.
Hell for running stuff like this you could probably get away with a £4 Raspberry Pi Zero.

To some, bothering to spend time setting up a Raspberry Pi and downloading roms is a waste of time.
It's all about personal preference. These have a clear market, namely those who want something ready straight away and for minor novelty value.

20 good games on this list and an awful lot of filler. At least the Nintendo one has no filler. Also the quality on these Mega Drive consoles is questionable i remember having a blaze one a few years ago it was crap.

Although this is licensed by Sega, it's not a genuine Sega product, so don't expect the same quality as the original Megadrive.
I wouldn't judge Nintendo yet, after some of VC games are poorly emulated on Wii U/3DS

Despite owning several retro consoles they're boxed up and never used, much more convenient via a Shield/PC

oh my god, Micro machines was THE best racer since... well I don't know what! one of the first cartridge games that had extra controller ports built into the cartridge for 4 player action. Awesome. Bomberman too, what a game. I remember watching it on Gamesmaster on CH4. I tried to get an OAP to play bomberman once, couldn't understand the D-Pad bless her (she was 80, this was circa 1995)
Shame that these units are such poor quality... how much can it cost for a basic motherboard with built in cpu, networking and sound. I'd happily pay an extra £10 for a quality experience close to what this should be... plug in and go. Rather than dealing with emulation myself.

I got an original mega cd (the one that the MD sat on top of, rather then the MK2 at the side) from Santa one year. I don't think I actually bought any games for it. I had a 7in1 cd that came with it, and a mate had some creepy alien abduction game.... *goes to google* Ground Zero - Texas, that I never completed. That was proper immersion gaming though! Still freaks me out thinking about it today. Damn barsteward aliens jumping out from behind corners. Bah!

I always prefer (old) Sega to (old) Nintendo but the NES mini is made by Nintendo so audio/video and overal build quality including the important gamepad quality is guaranteed to be good.
but these Sega units are licenced and made by crappy manufacturers so poor sound/visual and build quality are expected.
you can even tell by looking at that gamepad picture that its going to be rubbish.
so no thanks.

Voted hot by mistake. No idea how this got so hot, this isn't even made by Sega themselves. This "console" has also been out since 2009 and the emulation on it is poor quality even with the slot. As others on here have pointed out, no HDMI and the sound is terrible. Simply put it's a total cash grab cashing in on the recent hype for the Mini NES.
