It is true you can have smoke alarms fitted for free from your local fire brigade . But then I personally think anyone who is able to should buy one should buy and fit their own , save the time and resources of the fire brigade for the vulnerable who are unable .

True. I'm sure you could buy the same model as the fire brigade fit for a similar price to (the rrp of!) this. I'm sure this deal is just as safe and meets the same certifications as any supplied by the fire brigade.

But I can see why it seems appealing over trusting your families lives to something you've just had from Asda for a tenner, to get the fire brigade out to fit all your fire alarm systems professionally, for free, test them, and generally do a free home fire safety check etc too.

But a word of caution. I did a total refurb on my current house when I bought it, which also meant installing mains powered linked fire alarms throughout. The contractor supplied and fitted some non branded ones which worked fine (fortunately no fire, but going by false alarms). However, when they started to fail about 4 years in, I couldn't find the same ones. It was a pain in the ass changing the mounting brackets and connectors (although the latter wouldn't apply to battery powered).

For something like a fire alarm theres something to be said for stumping up a bit extra for ones anyone can quickly and easily replace like for like. In my case I just went for Kidde ones this time around.

Even if you can't find a fire alarm at this price do not put off getting one. Please.

​You are saving their time and resources by getting a free one fitted free by them as it's cheaper for them to do this than send a fire crew on an expensive emergency call out to put out a fire.

But you could save even more of their time and resources in buying your own and fitting them . In some Fire and rescue services they send operational crews out to fit them , so in all honesty its actually still costing them a fair wack to drive around in that big pump all day gluing smoke alarms to the ceilings of those too stupid or lazy to do it for themselves .

I get why the service exists for the old or the vulnerable . but a fully functioning adult should really ensure that they always have a smoke alarm working in their property anyway .

Who says they drive around) in their big "pump" to fit them...get real!
We do a lot of work for the T&W Fire Brigade vehicles and they have a fleet of other vehicles not just big "pumps" which obviously wouldn't make financial sense to use for this and it would be out of action if needed when it is if better use on call.
